“Jump for Joy,” a giclee from the estate of Ikki Matsumoto.
During the last half of the 20th Century, Sanibel’s reputation as an artist colony grew. Artists such as Ikki Matsumoto, Katie Gardenia and Charles McCullough became household names, inspired by the island’s ambience to develop their talent and build a community. Other artists followed, drawn to the qualities and Sanibel’s beauty.
The Zonta Club of Sanibel-Captiva is offering a chance to own a piece of art from these and other prominent artists in its “Peek at the Unique Repurposed” online auction, which replaces its traditional tour of island homes for just this year.

The Zonta Club of Sanibel-Captiva invites the public to help it empower women by taking part in “Peek at the Unique Repurposed,” a one-time event for 2021 that replaces the club’s traditional three-hour tour of island homes.
Working within COVID-19 guidelines, the club has designed this year’s fundraiser to feature a virtual auction of re-imagined furniture and décor, plus new art donated by local artists, along with the opportunity to have one’s valuables informally appraised by local experts. Proceeds will be awarded in grants to organizations whose mission of empowerment mirrors Zonta’s own. Since 2002, “Peek” has enabled the club to distribute over $1 million in grants to area non-profits.
