Canton Negro Oldtimers will continue under agreement with Canton

CANTON  The Canton Negro Oldtimers Activity Center and city have reached an agreement that allows the center s doors to stay open. The city sought to close the facility at 1016 12th Street NE by filing a civil nuisance complaint last year in Stark County Common Pleas Court. It described disturbances to the neighborhood and numerous visits from police 116 times from Jan. 1, 2019 to July 31, 2020  for criminal activity often involving drugs and guns. Judge Natalie Haupt presided over the case. Last week, the city and Oldtimers came to a solution. It permits the OIdtimers to host charitable and social events under certain conditions:

Hall of Fame Hops Brew Trail begins soon, includes local breweries

The inaugural Hall of Fame Hops Brew Trail will feature establishments in Stark, Tuscarawas and Holmes counties.  The brew trail organized by Visit Canton  the Stark County Convention and Visitors’ Bureau, begins March 15 and ends Nov. 7. It includes 15 stops at craft breweries, restaurants and a distillery. We re just really hopeful that with such a long duration and so many great local partners, especially ones that maybe people aren t quite as familiar with yet, that we will get a great showing, said Tonja Marshall, Visit Canton s executive vice president of marketing and communications.   Participants who check-in with the digital passport, available at www.HOFHops.com, will be entered to win prizes, such as Pro Football Hall of Fame museum passes and a gift certificate for an overnight stay at the Sandy Springs Brewers Quarters.

Canton, ODOT to upgrade pedestrian crosswalks this summer

 upgraded this summer in school zones and high-traffic areas. Canton City Council on Monday unanimously authorized the work, which will be entirely funded by a $750,000 Ohio Department of Transportation grant. The city s Engineering Department applied for the grant and has been working with ODOT to identify the improvement areas, according to Public Service Director John Highman. ODOT will manage the construction. New countdown pedestrian signals and improved pavement markings will be added to 22 intersections along Tuscarawas Street W and 28 intersections in school zones. Another 17 intersections along major roadways will receive new pedestrian signals, according to Highman. Primarily, you ll see them along Market and Cleveland Avenue, he told the council.
