Healthcare workers first-tier recipients, others to follow

The sense of relief and excitement was palpable last week as the local allotment of Moderna COVID-19 vaccines arrived and healthcare workers were innoculated. Due to initial limited supply recipients were prioritized, beginning first with frontline healthcare workers that included Kerrville Fire Department Emergency Medical Services crews, Peterson Health physicians and nurses, Kerrville State Hospital and Veterans Administration Hospital staff. While the hospitals administered the vaccine shots themselves, H-E-B Pharmacist Amber Burress mobilized to vaccinate other healthcare workers including KFD, home health and hospice workers and other small healthcare providers. “We received 100 doses in our first shipment; and I will be delivering and administering vaccines over the next couple of days,” Burress said. “Right now, we are the only provider that I know of certified to distribute the vaccines to individuals.”

Center Point family loses home to fire

There were five occupants of the home at the time of the fire. JaeLyn Walters, 23, said she heard what she thought was someone spraying a hose on the side of the house, which prompted her to open the door to look outside. Walters said she saw lattice in flames on the side of the house and immediately evacuated her three younger sisters and a female guest. I just started getting everyone out of the house, Walters said. We got all of the humans out of the house, but we are missing some animals. Walters said there was no time to grab any items from the home, including Christmas gifts and keepsakes.

Vaccines arrive, KFD begins vaccination process

As medical health professionals, KFD joins a long list of first tier recipients. H-E-B Pharmacist Amber Burress said she would be administering vaccines to as many as 100 medical professionals over the next two days, with more scheduled after Christmas. The Moderna vaccine arrived in Kerrville at the H-E-B pharmacy early Saturday morning. Peterson Regional Medical Center and the Kerrville State Hospital will receive and distribute the vaccines to their staff later today and over the weekend. Vaccination doses will continue to arrive and will be distributed by identified priorities over the next few weeks.
