A Monday-morning crash just outside of Kerrville left a 56-year-old Bandera man dead and three people injured.
Due to an extended period with no precipitation, Mondayâs light rain combined with a layer of accumulated grease, grime and dust to create an almost âblack iceâ layer on some portions of roadways, indicated Corporal James Salaz, a state trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety. This is what is believed to have caused the driver of a southbound Ford pickup on Texas 173 to lose control and veer into oncoming traffic at about 7 a.m. Monday.Â
The driver of the Ford, a 48-year-old Kerrville man, tried to recover but was unable to before a collision with a northbound Chevy pickup, Salaz said.

The running total of active COVID-19 cases has increased in Kerr County by 127 since Dec. 14, which means new infections are outpacing recoveries, according to local officials.
As of Tuesday, 1,839 county residents had recovered from the virus since the pandemic began, and 435 had active infections, according to
the latest information from the county. The local infection rate was 26 percent as of Dec. 21, according to Kerr Countyâs Emergency Management Coordinator William B. âDubâ Thomas.

As medical health professionals, KFD joins a long list of first tier recipients.
H-E-B Pharmacist Amber Burress said she would be administering vaccines to as many as 100 medical professionals over the next two days, with more scheduled after Christmas.
The Moderna vaccine arrived in Kerrville at the H-E-B pharmacy early Saturday morning.
Peterson Regional Medical Center and the Kerrville State Hospital will receive and distribute the vaccines to their staff later today and over the weekend.
Vaccination doses will continue to arrive and will be distributed by identified priorities over the next few weeks.
