1 killed, 3 injured in Monday-morning crash

A Monday-morning crash just outside of Kerrville left a 56-year-old Bandera man dead and three people injured. Due to an extended period with no precipitation, Monday’s light rain combined with a layer of accumulated grease, grime and dust to create an almost “black ice” layer on some portions of roadways, indicated Corporal James Salaz, a state trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety. This is what is believed to have caused the driver of a southbound Ford pickup on Texas 173 to lose control and veer into oncoming traffic at about 7 a.m. Monday.  The driver of the Ford, a 48-year-old Kerrville man, tried to recover but was unable to before a collision with a northbound Chevy pickup, Salaz said.

Peterson Hospital staff receive COVID-19 vaccinations on Christmas Eve

Christmas came a day early for some people — in the form of a shot in the arm at the local hospital.  In a second-floor room at Peterson Regional Medical Center, a festive mood prevailed early Thursday morning. Employees poured themselves coffee at a large beverage station, some got their pictures taken next to a life-size cutout of Will Ferrell dressed as an elf, and five vaccination tables were set up bearing decorations such as a small, lighted Christmas tree, giant nutcracker and candy canes.  A large screen on a wall bore a video of a Christmas tree near a wreath-decorated hearth with a flickering fire.

Active COVID-19 infections total 435 in Kerr County

The running total of active COVID-19 cases has increased in Kerr County by 127 since Dec. 14, which means new infections are outpacing recoveries, according to local officials. As of Tuesday, 1,839 county residents had recovered from the virus since the pandemic began, and 435 had active infections, according to the latest information from the county. The local infection rate was 26 percent as of Dec. 21, according to Kerr County’s Emergency Management Coordinator William B. “Dub” Thomas. Dub measures infection rate based on the number of people who last tested and were deemed positive during the last recorded testing day.  “Every way we look at this situation, we’re still heading in the wrong direction here locally,”  Thomas said in a press release. “I’ve expected an increase in cases, but not to this magnitude. We’ve seen infection rates in the double digits since early November, and I don’t see them falling into the sing

Vaccines arrive, KFD begins vaccination process

As medical health professionals, KFD joins a long list of first tier recipients. H-E-B Pharmacist Amber Burress said she would be administering vaccines to as many as 100 medical professionals over the next two days, with more scheduled after Christmas. The Moderna vaccine arrived in Kerrville at the H-E-B pharmacy early Saturday morning. Peterson Regional Medical Center and the Kerrville State Hospital will receive and distribute the vaccines to their staff later today and over the weekend. Vaccination doses will continue to arrive and will be distributed by identified priorities over the next few weeks.
