It’s a topic that affects countless lives, yet is often overlooked until it can no longer be ignored. In the week that the Museo de las Americas in Denver opened their exhibit exploring domestic violence, the topic once again made headlines after a shooting in Colorado Springs killed six. Latina Safehouse, one of the partners of the Somos exhibit, estimates that one in three Latinas will experience domestic violence in their lifetimes.
This community art show features 13 local artists, sharing their stories through visual and mixed media artwork.
1 in 3 Latinx women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime, yet it continues to be a taboo topic, often seen as a “private problem.” Curator Carina Bañuelos-Harrison, the founder of Art and Color, invites viewers to see, hear and feel the voices of survivors, and to celebrate their strength. “Publicly exposing the implications of domestic violence transforms the conversation around what many of us consider forbidden and gives us an opportunity to empower survivors” says Bañuelos-Harrison.

SOMOS: On Domestic Violence, Resilience and Healing takes a hard look at the social reverberations of domestic abuse through the eyes and hearts of thirteen Denver artists. Curated by Carina Bañuelos-Harrison, the show is meant to inspire discussion, and to that end, it is accompanied by a strong lineup of public programming. Bañuelos-Harrison, Latina Safehouse director Angela Ceseña and Museo director Claudia Moran will be joined by members of the safehouse’s Comadre Network for the series kickoff, “Motherhood, Domestic Violence and Healing.” The live, in-person event is free, but an RSVP is recommended here.
