“We’ve had all the pleasure of the massed flower displays of Floriade over 20-odd years, but no blossom trees in spring to compliment this show,” laments gardening columnist
CEDRIC BRYANT.
I’M often asked what my favourite tree or shrub is. My standard answer is “the one I’m looking at”.
Cedric Bryant.
However, I have a special affinity for blossom trees. In the early days of this city, there were many more blossom trees planted than today, especially in the older suburbs. For example, look at Flinders Way, Griffith, compared with most of Belconnen, where eucalypts dominate the streetscapes.
COLLISS PARRETT begs to disagree with political columnist Michael Moore when it comes to drugs…
I STRONGLY disagree with Michael Moore’s comments (“Finally, injecting some sense into drug policy”, CN April 29).
On the one hand, he says: “The ACT is leading the nation with drug and alcohol policies.”
A little further on, he writes that there is significant risk of further delay saying, as the minister pointed out a month ago, “additional scoping will be required before a decision is made on whether to proceed on a drug-consumption room in the ACT including community consultation, an assessment of the existing legislative framework and further development of an appropriate model”.

CHIEF Minister Andrew Barr promises the return of Floriade this September at Commonwealth Park after the event was cancelled due to covid in 2020.Â
Set to run from September 11 until October 10, the event will feature more than 1,000,000 bulbs and annuals.
However, the size and scale of the event is not yet known and will be announced in coming months following consultation with the chief health officer, Dr Kerryn Coleman, to ensure the event is covid-safe.
Complementing Floriade will be âFloriade: Reimaginedâ, an event introduced last year, which saw 80 community groups plant bulbs and annuals to create a tulip trail through Canberraâs suburbs.
