City council leadership agrees budget proposals Carlisle City Council’s leadership has agreed its budget recommendations for the coming year, amid an “exceptionally difficult” year for the city. The city council’s executive agreed its budget recommendations for the 2021 and 2022 financial year, and will be put before the council at its next meeting on February 2. Speaking at last Wednesday’s executive meeting, city council deputy leader and finance, governance and resources portfolio holder Gareth Ellis said the council had, like families and businesses across the district, experienced an “exceptionally difficult” year in 2020 as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. “We have kept our council tax changes as low as we possibly can,” Mr Ellis said.

Plans for 33 homes in Etterby, Carlisle raise new concerns

CONCERNS have been raised after new plans for more than 30 homes in Carlisle have been submitted. Plans for 33 homes on land to the north-west of Stainton Gardens, in Stainton Road, Etterby, were submitted to Carlisle City Council in December. The planning application has raised concerns as the land is situated near to the Deer Park site where plans were recently refused. The application proposes the development of 33 number two, three and four-bedroom properties for Genesis Homes on land off Stainton Road. However, concerns have been raised about the impact this will have on residents in the area. Helen Davison, councillor for Kingmoor and Belah, has some initial worries about the plans.

Chance to have your say on Carlisle City Council s budget

Residents are being given the chance to share their thoughts on the draft council budget. Carlisle City Council s Executive Committee is now consulting with city residents, businesses and organisations about next year s budget. In the past decade, the council has achieved or identified more than £9 million in transformational savings, with a revised savings requirement being calculated for the next two years. It suggests an increase from £1 million to £1.2 million in 2021/22, with a further increase to £2.05 million in 2023/24. Leader of Carlisle City Council, Councillor John Mallinson, said: “I would like to thank all the officers and Members who have contributed to the development of the draft 2021/2022 budget.
