(Breeze photo by Lauren Clem) NORTH SMITHFIELD – When Michael Mongeon first bought the property at 199 Eddie Dowling Highway in 2010, he said, the backyard was a grassy area, and the tenants who lived there liked to play badminton outside. Since then, it’s become a swamp where cattails and other wetland vegetation have taken over the property right up to the back door. “When I got this property, the whole backyard was grass. Now, you can’t walk out there without sinking a foot into the mud,” he said during a visit to the home last week.

NSPD arrest two for alleged narcotics sales

3/10/2021 Laura Heinzmann and Antonio Freitas were arrested at the Sunoco on Eddie Dowling Highway. NORTH SMITHFIELD – The North Smithfield Police Department on Tuesday arrested two individuals after they received a tip someone was allegedly selling narcotics out of a motel room. Antonio Freitas and Laura Heinzmann were arrested after police found them sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot of the Sunoco on Route 146. Police said they had received information that two individuals with a vehicle matching the one they were discovered in were allegedly selling narcotics out of a room at the nearby Traveler’s Motor Lodge. The two also had bench warrants out for their arrest, and Freitas had an expired license, according to police.

(Breeze photo by Lauren Clem) NORTH SMITHFIELD – A local church will not be holding outdoor services in North Smithfield during the COVID-19 pandemic after the Town Council declined a requested noise permit on March 1. The Rev. Martin Capeles Jr. first approached the council in early February about holding services outside Igniting Life Praise and Worship Center on Eddie Dowling Highway. At the time, several councilors said they wanted to look into the issue further and resume the matter at the next meeting.
