Springfield residents had the chance to speak up Monday about how legislative districts in Illinois should be redrawn.
The House redistricting committee held a public hearing at the state Capitol after previously hosting regional meetings in other areas of the state.
Several witnesses testified, advocating for a fair map-making process that was inclusive of different communities.
State Rep. Tim Butler, R-Springfield, used the hearing as an opportunity to highlight why Illinois needs a new redistricting process and said Springfield was an example of how using a partisan process breaks up communities. He said when the current maps were first drawn in 2011, Springfield was divided up among three different senators and three representatives none living in Springfield.
