Springfield residents had the chance to speak up Monday about how legislative districts in Illinois should be redrawn.
The House redistricting committee held a public hearing at the state Capitol after previously hosting regional meetings in other areas of the state.
Several witnesses testified, advocating for a fair map-making process that was inclusive of different communities.
State Rep. Tim Butler, R-Springfield, used the hearing as an opportunity to highlight why Illinois needs a new redistricting process and said Springfield was an example of how using a partisan process breaks up communities. He said when the current maps were first drawn in 2011, Springfield was divided up among three different senators and three representatives — none living in Springfield.
