jfishbein@lewistownsentinel.com LEWISTOWN Zach Hesketh and Alex Haines grew up together in Mifflin County. They went to Lewistown Area High School, playing sports together and graduating together. They both completed nursing school and work in their hometown. For Christmas, they and others who have signed on to help them go beyond medicine with one small patient. This year, their aim is to double that holiday spirit. It all started for the pair five Christmases past, when they took it upon themselves to raise money for a family in need specifically, for a family whose child needed their treatment in the previous year.

The March lockdown decimated train travel and forced the organisation to quickly draw up plans for thousands of frontline staff to keep working safely out on the network, and for thousands of others to work effectively from home. And then came August 12, and the Stonehaven derailment that claimed three lives. We have spoken with senior figures within Network Rail who have revealed their heartache at the crash – the first fatal crash involving a landslip since 1995. They have also vented their frustration at not being able to speak freely about their position, due to strict protocol.

Major step forward for long-awaited railway station at East Linton

PLANS for a railway station to return to East Linton following an absence of more than 50 years have been lodged with East Lothian Council. Campaigners have been calling for the station to return to the village for more than two decades, with a significant step confirmed by Network Rail on Monday. The multi-million-pound project will be weighed up by the council’s planning department, with a decision expected next year. Iain Gray, East Lothian MSP, was pleased to see progress being made at last. He said: “It has been many years coming, but this is another important step towards delivering the new station and the benefits it will bring.”
