Lewistown resident announces candidacy for school board

LEWISTOWN Diane Stewart has announced her candidacy for a seat on the Mifflin County School District’s Board of Directors.
Stewart, born and raised in Lewistown, graduated in 1977 from Lewistown Area High School and attended Shippensburg University where she earned her teaching certificate and her principal’s certificate. She has also earned a Master’s of Education degree from Wilkes University.
Stewart began working for MCSD in 1981 and retired from the school district in 2019. Over those years, she was a classroom teacher in grades 3, 5, 6, 7, remediated students in grades 4, 6, 9, 11, and worked with high school seniors from Kish, Chief Logan, Lewistown, and the vo-tech (currently The Academy) through an on-the-job training program by placing seniors in the workforce.

LEWISTOWN Retired teacher Mark Baker has announced his candidacy for a seat on the Mifflin County School District Board of Directors.
Baker, a Republican and lifelong resident of Mifflin County, is a 1978 graduate of Lewistown Area High School as well as the Juniata-Mifflin Area Vocational Technical School, and graduated from The Pennsylvania State University in 1983.
Baker worked at J.M. Young and Sons in Belleville as a roofer before starting a teaching career. On June 30, 2020 he retired from teaching building trades at the Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology after 35 years of service.

Samuel “Sam” M. Rice III, 49, of Bellefonte, passed away unexpectedly at home on Monday, Feb. 22, 2021. Born on Oct. 30, 1971, in Lewistown, he was the son of Samuel M. Rice, Jr., and Linda (Wise) Rice, who are both surviving in McClure and Lewistown, respectively. On Feb. 11, 1997, he married the love of his life, Bridget (McGuire) Rice, who survives him at home after sharing over 24 years of marriage together.
Sam was a 1990 graduate of Lewistown Area High School. He served in the U.S. Army Corps. 182nd Airborne.
In addition to his wife, Bridget, and parents, he is survived by his two children: Annelise, of Miami, Florida, and Wyldon, of Bellefonte. Also surviving are two sisters, Linda Moyer, of McClure, and Samantha Rice, of Hobart, Indiana.

The heavenly band gained a new trumpet/cornet/flugelhorn player, James S. Ressler, 87, of Reedsville on January 23, 2021 after a 6-month battle with cancer.
Born May 29, 1933 in Lebanon, PA, he was the son of Samuel F. and Margaret Hollinger Ressler. On November 30, 1985 he married his surviving wife, Nancy Mowrer Ressler. They were able to have 35 wonderful years together.
Surviving are his daughters, Connie R. Parisi of Doylestown, and Penny L. Henry of Horsham, two grandchildren Alison D. Treston (David) of South Burlington, VT and Andrew D. Parisi (Arianne) of Golden, CO. He has three great grandchildren, Samuel and Quinn Parisi, and Elliott Treston. He also has two dear cousins, Linda MacGregor of Warminster, and Susan Marakovits of Allentown. He was preceded in death by a son, James Scott on December 10, 1969.
