Phoenix Bike Lane Plan on North Central Avenue Meets Resistance

Q&AZ: Are Microchips Too Thirsty For Drought-Stricken Arizona?

Storyblocks Why do so many microchip companies bring such a water-intensive process to drought-stricken Arizona? Part of the answer lies in the state s history. Intel has announced a $20 billion, two-factory expansion in Chandler, and Taiwan Semiconductor is building a new plant in Phoenix. But why do so many companies bring such a water-intensive process to drought-stricken Arizona? One listener asked just that through KJZZ s Q&AZ project. Part of the answer lies in the state s history. We were Silicon Valley before Silicon Valley. Really, Silicon Valley didn t come about until sort of like the middle 50s, but Galvin put a stake in the ground here in Arizona in 1949, said Steven Zylstra, president and CEO of the Arizona Technology Council.

Explore Art, History and Technology at Arizona Falls

The transformation of a historic waterfall by SRP, the Phoenix Arts Commission and the Arcadia neighborhood allows Phoenix-area residents to experience something old and something new. Arizona Falls, formed by a natural 20-foot drop along the Arizona Canal between what is now 56th and 58th streets, reopened in June 2003 as a restored hydroelectric plant and neighborhood gathering place where visitors can learn, interact and reflect. The new Arizona Falls combines art, history and technology to generate clean electricity from the canal’s waterfall. The History of the Site In the late 1800s, Phoenicians enjoyed the wonders of Arizona Falls, gathering there to picnic, socialize and dance near the cool water.

Murphy s Bridle Path: The history of Phoenix s equestrian promenade

Although it’s called the Murphy Bridle Path, you’re not likely to see any mounted riders on the dirt trail that parallels the east side of North Central Avenue in Phoenix. But it was a different story in 1948 when the Arizona Horse Lovers Club formally dedicated the 5-mile trail.         Equestrians gathered 73 years ago for a Sunday morning pancake breakfast near the path’s gateway at the northeast intersection with Bethany Home Road. A symbolic, 125-pound iron horseshoe dangled from the gateway’s juniper posts at the entrance. Riders could refresh their horses on the opposite side of Central, where a Salt River Project irrigation lateral often carried water.
