The winds whipping that flag. They topped the force avenue Tropical Storm setting up a blizzard with whiteout conditions. With the snow, though, moving out, it is ushered in part two of this winter blast. What could be a record shattering cold. Are you ready for this because sadly we dont have much choice here. First off philadelphia schools are closed tomorrow. Public and parochial. So is the City Government and we have hundreds of more delays and cancellations. They are scrolling at the bomb tom of your screen. Parts of our area got slammed with more than a foot of snow and now the story becomes dangerous cold and wind chills. When the snow was falling its hardest or news crews battled the elements not your neighborhoods making sure you knew what was happening and doing our best to help keep you safe. Tonight as we deal with the aftermath of all of this snow, and the mercury plunges our team is fanned out yet again across our area. Weve been talking about first the heavy snow about the brutal cold. As advertised its moving in. You can see the roads here in old city philadelphia look pretty slick and those side walks are slippery as well and still snow covered. It is 13 below in the poconos right now. That is the wind chill going down to 20 to 30 below overnight tonight. Philadelphia it feels like three. Wilmington it feels like three below. In millville zero. Lancaster it feels like 2 degrees below zero. Take look at these winds. Winds gusting to 31 miles an hour in philadelphia. Atlantic city 43. The same in ocean city. You saw those winds whipping the flags down there and theyre out of the northwest. Thats our cold wind and arctic High Pressure system is moving in and were talking about challenging record cold. Cold that we havent seen in many years. Lets talk about what to expect for tomorrow. Well send it over to scott. Hey, scott. Hi there, kathy. The storm system is moving out. The snow has ended, but get ready for a frigid friday the across the area. In fact high temperatures tomorrow will be stuck get this in the teens but feels like temperatures will be below zero. Well go hour by hour throughout the day. Sunshine returns but look at the temperatures 8 00 a. M. 13 degrees. 14 by 10am. By 2 00 in the afternoon 16 degrees. High temperatures in philadelphia likely around 18, 19 degrees tomorrow. But look at the bottom line. When you factor in the win how you should dress, how your body reacts. 31 below zero is what it will feel like at 5am. Mount pocono it will feel like 14 below zero and pottstown ten below zero in philadelphia and 12 below zero in atlantic city. As we continue throughout the morning, we are below zero with feels like temperatures really into the afternoon at 5 00 oclock it will feel like 23 degrees below zero mount pocono. Right now, in atlantic city, firefighters are bracing the elements as they tackle a fire at a highrise for seniors and the fire has forced residents some disable out into this bonechilling cold. Dave kinchen live at the scene right now. Dave . Reporter lucy, in these arctic tem temps we can tell you there are 300 people displaced by this fire. Fire Officials Say many of these people are elderly, special needs folks and also disable in a special Public Housing complex here when this fire came through including people who were on the top floors on their balconies with smoke pouring out of their homes. They were asking for help desperately. I was scared to death because i didnt know where my wife was. Reporter intense moments for Antonio Lopez who came to find firefighters working three alarm fire at his complex. The jeffreys inlet towers in atlantic city. I hear all these sirens and cop cars and ambulances. Im like oh my god, whats going on . When i get to my building, i cant get in there. They says you going to next door and i said what about my wife . My wife is up there. I got to find my wife first. I dont have anything. Its like everything is in the apartment. I dont have no debit cards all my money is in the house and i have nothing. Reporter meantime, First Responders evacuated dozens of residents including the elderly and disabled moving them to another Apartment Building as well as a school. While they did that firefighters battled bone tingling cold and strong frigid winds while trying to get water on to the blaze. The blizzard was on the tail end. We were still experiencing 30, through miles an hour winds. We were still experiencing, you know, whiteout conditions. We had drifts two, three 4foot drifts actually when this call came in we had two engines stuck. Reporter as displaced residents figure out their next steps. I dont know what im going to do. I just pray to god that everything is going to turn out good. Reporter fire Officials Say this looks like electrical fire. They actually encountered wires that were popping and sparking on the first few floors when they first came to assess the situation. Also, while there are no injuries thankfully were told it will take up to 12 hours to place the people who are displaced into temporary housing. Lucy . We can tell how windy it is out there, too. Youre being blown by the high winds. Its mess out here. Goodness gracious. Thank you dave. The storm slammed the jersey. Governor christie issued a state of emergency for the rest of the night. It dumped more than a foot of snow in blizzard conditions. Cape may courthouse has 17inches on the ground. The governor is hoping drivers will stay off the road so plows can do their work. Theyve got a big task at hand with all the snow on the ground and big winds blowing bigger show drifts. From the shore to the bushes the coast saw the most snow areas inland still got several inches. Making for a messy if not treacherous day. Fox 29s bruce gordon live now in king of prussia. Bruce . Reporter lucy, king of prussia got about four and a half inches. Thats the official counter from this morning and into the early afternoon. Thats pretty consistent witness suburbs north and west of the city of philadelphia. Not exactly snow mageddon frank holiday at the beach either. As the sunset on king of prussia, the temperature dropped, the winds whistled and an ice slicked dekalb bike glistens we found alex voto gassing up his snowblower for an evening of plowing. What are you finding on the back roads. Not plowed. Like you figure secondary roads. They dont get to them real quick. Reporter icy. Icy and snowy. Reporter those who plow full time four to 5inches of snow, brutal cold and high winds were not the toughest hurdle out on the roads. So what was . Battling with traffic. It is what it is. I mean, they got to let douse our job and give muss room to clear the roads. Reporter at this wawa cars were lined up to air up. Each drop of 10 degrees cost i was pound per square inch of air that air isnt escaping its condensing inside. Pressure went down in my car. Ive been driving today. Definitely went down. A lot of the main roads in center city are actually easily drivable. There have been a lot of traffic out today more than what we thought we would see thats kind of helped clear the roads beyond what the city crews were doing but, of course, as you can imagine if you go into some of those neighborhoods well try to give you a look. This is tenth street driving through south philadelphia. You can see that the roads are not completely clear. Theyre not terrible but if you look closely you can see that there are patches that have not been plowed. Some traffic has helped pad pat the snow down lot of people of course are worried about the dropping temperatures which weve been talking about all night, want is going to happen as the temperatures continue to drop and we see some refreezing overnight. Remember what it was like to be a kid when snow and cold were no biggy . Aiden and his sister khloe are loving their day off from school but mom isnt. No, its not that bad. But temperatures too low. Reporter she says the kids werent happy about the weather at first. Like their first day of school of this year and school is canceled. They were so sad. And now, yeah, theyre happy again. Very few businesses were open. Snow accumulation wasnt too bad around the city. But enough for shoveling and concern about a freeze overnight had some out salting. The slush made it difficult for some drivers to get around. Putts Public Transportation was probably the best way to go today. As as long as you could stand the whipping wind and the wait. Terrible. Im out here freezing okay. Her bus was 15 minutes behind so far but when we caught up with her at jfk. They should be on schedule. Its not the worst anyone here has ever seen but really the major factor that has made this storm unbarable, that screaming wind. It was hard to tell when the snow stopped. Whipping wind making it feel like round two for the shaw family of bensalem. Dad not catching any kind of break. I tried to shovel it with shovel but its pretty hard. Reporter he stopped digging and he started up his snowblower. Needless to say, it worked a lot better. Little bit wet so its heavy i dont want to hurt my back. Its very cold so he didnt ask again. Reporter look at my car. Mom in law got in late from work. She says even worse than the slippery, slushy roads. The wind is very bad. Yeah. My car is right there. I went to the market yesterday and spent 200 because of the storm. Reporter despite that angie was back today reuping her familys supply of windshield wiper fluid. Turns out, you cant plan for everything. The trucks driving past keep making the windows dirty. Bundled up and bracing the chill customers restocking in preparation for day two cold and clean up. Ive been here since 17 years but this is the first time i seen this much cold. Reporter yeah, we still got snow emergencies throughout the county including right here in bensalem schools remain closed for a second day tomorrow and of course authorities still telling people stay off of the road. When the snow tapered off people hit the roads not necessarily the best thing to do if you dont have to. In Delaware County drivers taking it nice and slow on the roads in springfield. During the peak of the storm, tragedy struck. The driver of an suv could not stop before train tracks on a snow covered road. Her suv barreled right into a passing septa Regional Rail train and her passenger died. Fox 29s dawn timmeney takes us to the scene. Reporter it was a grim scene just before 9 30 this morning along red lion road near philmont avenue in lower mooreland township. Two women on their way to work coming down this hal by the Railroad Crossing unable to stop on the snowcovered road. You can see the marks in the snow where the suv slid down the steep incline brake breaking through the gate and slamming into an oncoming septa train. The driver of the vehicle was able to exit the vehicle before the crash. The passenger remained in the vehicle and was later found outside the vehicle along the tracks. Reporter the police chief says the driver realized she was in trouble and told the passenger they had to get out. The driver jumping for her life. Sadly, her coworker could not get out in time. I just think obviouslily there was snow and very bad weather at the time of the accident. Reporter badly mangled serin suv towed from the scene. Septa says it hit between the third and fourth train cars on its west trenton line. The train operator stopped at the next station after realizing what happened. Some 50 passengers can taken off the train and shuttled to their destinations. The west trenton line back up and running around 1 30 this afternoon. After being suspended for some four hours. The driver of the suv treated and released from the hospital. She has answered questions and helped with the investigation. Been very helpful. There are several businesses along the train tracks here. One worker says this hill behind me was extremely slick when he came to work early this morning. Crews are still working to fix a large water main break in northeast philadelphia. This morning it burst at rhawn street and castor of a league 70 homes without water. Still very very slick if you happen to be driving by. Like this car right here moving at a very very steady speed. But other than that, we have not seen a lot of people moving out and about here. As far as those wind gusts go, check it out right now. Those flags are moving there. Thats just how quickly the wind picks up over by the coast. That coastal breeze definitely kicking in and making it much chillier here tonight. At rehoboth beach, Kristyn Leone fox 29 news. Not everyone stayed inside during this storm. Many took some time to begin shoveling away the snow or just took a trip to the store for supplies. Fox 29s Dave Schratwieser has more from Burlington County. Reporter it was a father son Snow Shoveling Team hard at work on rancocas avenue in hainesport thursday afterno afternoon. Marshall lories and his son nissan scooping up the snow as fast as it fell. Not bad. Pretty light. Pretty easy shoveling. Not heavy. Good stuff. Easy. Working on it. Reporter downtown mt. Holly looked like a ghost town except for a single shoveler at the robins nest on washington street. Snow crews were also hard at work along main street in moorestown. Thats where we found thomas mount and his coworker grinding it out. Bad. Push it and its covered right back up. Its bad. Stay home. Stay off the roads. Thats what i would do. Cold and its very windy. The roads are slippery. Eye but i like driving in the snow. Reporter main roads here in Burlington County are cleared almost down to the blacktop. As for Shopping Centers this is a 10foot high pile about 20 of them here in this parking lot right off route 38. They should be fine come the morning but, again, watch out for those freezing temperatures. My guesstimate on the snowfall here in Burlington County, about five to 6inches. In moorestown, Dave Schratwieser, fox 29 news. Flying in airplane not something you want to do in blizzard like conditions the snow provided an opportunity for some people to try out their drones. These videos right here shot by a drone chalfont bucks county. Its just a Winter Wonderland from that vantage point. Iain page is here now and what weve been enduring pails in comparison to massachusetts. Iain. Lucy, incredible stuff. Forecasters say high winds and high tide was pushed by that big storm we saw moving up the east coast. Check this out. This was incredible stuff because a lot of that stuff bomb cyclone gave high winds made high tide and had some areas little bit south of boston marsh field massachusetts people were flooded hadnt to be rescued from their homes. There was a lot of water outside. It looked like there was 2 feet and cars outside almost completely underwater. There was water coming in the back door right into the kitch kitchen. Reporter so the governor now says theyll have to deal with the frigid temperatures once that snow starts tapering down so lucy how cold is it going to get . Forecasters say the wind chill in some of those areas in massachusetts could be as low as 40 below this weekend. Sounds like a alaska right there. Thank you much, iain. Well its been eventful day to say the least. Snow started after midnight and crews have been out ever since plowing the roads. One of the difficulties keeping up with the heavy snowfall but once that stopped, winds have made it difficult to clear roads because once they cleared them, the wind blows and snow is on them again. Temperatures are expected to drop through out the weekend and ice is going to be an issue especially for people trying to dig out tomorrow. Now in Suffolk County theres been 80 crashes thats an area with 1600 lane miles something tolls point out while new York City Schools are open tomorrow, many here on long island will be closed making it a cold and snowy fourday weekend. Reporter in west chester, todays storm made the roads difficult to get around. Most people chose to head out on foot while plows and snow removal teams worked to clear roads and area businesses. We have like five buildings were taking care of plus we have another crew doing other buildings across town. Reporter max guzman started his day with snow receive mole around 2 00 this morning. The wind is not cooperating. The wind is pretty bad because as soon as we get it shoveled off, the winds below a drift right back on. So were pretty much double timing it. Reporter this is the third time thomas west cleared this parking lot this morning. He anticipates being on the clock for another eight hours. Which means a lot of coffee. Oh yeah ive had four cups already today. Yeah. Keep on going. Got to keep everything open for the customers. Reporter hernandez plowed this dominos parking lot while his wife shoveled the sidewalk. He was unable to get a babysitter so inside the truck is 13 month old son die. Good o rides with him. Fun. He loves it. Making it a family event. This is my third dominos pizza. Salting, shoveling and plowing does come with a price. Mike knows hes been doing snow removal for 14 years. Little sore. Little sore. Dont feel it until the neck day too much after a nice shower.
