Chain. Oh, nosc no more intable man of mystery . [ laughter ] what does off the chain look like im pretty sure someone has to tackle him and put pants on him as it is [ laughter ] according to a new poll, former Vice President joe biden now has a doubledigit lead over Bernie Sanders in the iowa caucus its the most space biden has ever given anyone. [ laughter and alause while speaking to reporters today, President Trump talked ou his thoughts on the upcoming masters Golf Tournament saying, quote, i think its going to be a great masters. Well, it ought to be youve certainly been practicing enough [ laughter ] morrow is national only child day. Said trump, i got you a card, ivanka. [ laughter and applause Attorney Michael Avenatti was indicted today on 36 charges, including bank and wire fraud, in connection to his alleged attempt to extort millions of dollars from nike. Well, if youre thinking of putting him in jail, i say just do it. [ light laughter ] [ cheers and applause and if you do as and if you do, ple please make him share a cell with michael cohen. I mean that [ laughter ] itll be like seinfeld moving in with newman. [ light laughter ] after facing additional charges stemming from her role in the ce re College Admissions cheating scandal, Actress Lori Loughlin has reportedly reached out to Lindsay Lohans former crisis manager for help [ light laughter ] said the crisis manager, are you sure im not good at is. [ laughter and applause im historically not good at this. And finally, netflix is reportedly planning to release its First Magazine as soon as youre done reading it, they send you another whether you want it or not [ lit lahthter ] laeses and gentlemen, we have a great show for you tonight [ cheers and applause he is starring in the broadway production of burn this currently in pviews and opening april 16th at the hudson theater here in new york. Adam driver, everybody [ cheers and applause always so happy to have him here you can see her in the new film little opening this weekend. Regina hall is back, you guys. [ cheers and applause and he plays the very funny noho hank in the hbo series barry. Anthy carrigan is here, you guys [ cheers and applause so it is a really, really good night. Oubefore we get to any of guests, the president is resisting calls to release his tax returns and calling the people who invtigate him traitors for more on this, its time for a closer look. [ cheers and applause seth before we get to trump, a bunch of other crazy stuff happened todayam for e, you might remember michael avenatti, the guy who used to be stormy danielss lawyer well, today, avenatti was charged with 36 counts of fraud, perjury, failure to pay taxes, embezzlement, and other financial crimes and 36 counts is a lot but when you look at him, you think, i thought it would have been higher. [ laughter ] and the details of the indictment are truly insane. The l. A. Times reports that avenatti stole millions of dollars from five client he put 2. 5 million of that money into the purchase of a private jet. And in the other case, the money landed in the accounts of g. B. Autosport, llc, which managed avenattis Race Car Team how this the first were hearing of Michael AvenattisRace Car Team . [ light laughter ] ats the dead giveaway that someone is bad news. The race car track is where james bond meets the villain foh first time as hes pulling off his helmet and his racing gloves mr. Bond, should we speak somewhere quieter . [ light laughter ] also, did you not see goodfellas when you rip people off, you gotta play it cool with the money. Y youre like a o buys a ferrari and asks for the vanity plate bank robber [ laughter ] while heas doing this, avenatti was actively putting himself in the spotlight he said heas going to run for president in 2020. He made more appearances on cnn than the words breaking news. And a lot of people fell for avenatti, probably because his Job Description was always attorney and not Race Car Team owner [ laughter ] while that was happening, fo wikileaks der Julian Assange was also arrested in london, where he was dragged out of the Ecuadorian Embassy looking like santa claus with a manifesto [ light laughter ] youre all naughty i have it on my list [ applause ] i mean based on that treatment, i cant wait to read what assange writes on the ecuador embassys airbnb page [ light laughter ] now ecuador had granted assange asylum in their embassy, but withdrew it, which allowed u. K. Authorities arrest him. According to the daily beast, ecuador imposed a new and detailed set of rules on its fugitive guest, banning unannounced visitors andsa requiring ase to pay his own medical bills, clean up after himself in the bathroom, and tend to the wellbeing, food, cleanliness, and proper care of his cat. [ light laughter ] assange bristled at the restrictions, and took ecuadors Foreign Ministry to court. He took them to court over his cat. [ ughter ] usually people go to court to get restraining orders against their cats [ light laughter ] please, your honor, he keeps glaring at me like he wants to kill me. [ light laughter ]lo now , you can think assange is a creep, which he is, and also be worried about what this means for press freedom. But one person whos always been vean clear about where he st on wikileaks is donald trump and yet when trump was asked today about wikileaks, which he repeatedly praised throughout mp the cagn, he pretended he didnt know anything about it. Mr. President , do you still loveikileaks i know nothing about wikileaks. Its not my thing. [ light laughter ] seth oh, its not your thing . Well, what is your thing [ indistinct chatter ] you know, there are 15 players capable of winning, and i guess you could say there arara a lot more than that theyre great players. I dont thk a field for the masters has ever been this deep. I was watching late last night, and they were going over thes. Different player i think the field has never been so deep. But always phil and tiger and dustin i mean, you have so many great players. But they were just saying, theyre younger, theyre stronger, they have never hit the ball this longt they have never hie ball this accurately. They have never putted better than they do now you know, the whole thing is pretty incredible. But the field is vy, very deep i think its going to be a gat masters. Seth thats the st coherent answer hes ever given. [ laughter ] and it wasnt even that coherentrs [ cheend applause if being president was just answering golf questions, thisy uld be George Washington [ laughter ] but seriously, how can you say wikileaks is not yr thing . Your government just arrested a guy Whose Organization you repeatedly praised throughout like someone just offered you g weed at a party. Oh, no thanks, man. Thats not my thing. [ light laughter ] also, do you not remember when you said all of this stuff the sad part is we dont talk about wikileaks. Because its incredible. You see so much from these wikileaks. You see so much. Boy, i love reading those wikileaks. Ill tell you, this wikileaks stuff is unbelievable. This wikileaks is like a treasure trove wikileaks is amazing wikileaks, i love wikileaks. [ light laughter ] seth i love wikileaks. [ laughter and applause he said it he said it like the guy the end of a romcom who can finally admit hes in love with his best friend i can finally say it, i love carol [ light laughter ] while trump was dodging questions about his previo support for wikileaks, he was also dodging questions about everything from the Mueller Report to his tax returns. Last week, emocrats requested six years of trumps personal and business Tax Information from 2013 to 2018, including individual tax returns and retus from eight businesses linked to trump. Eight businesses of course, its hard to find those returns since seven of those businesses went bankrupt years ago. [ light laughter ] f if you want tod the tax returns for trump steaks or trump vodka, you have to go deep into the irs basement and look in the box labeled obvious scams. [ ughter ] but the law is clear democrats on the house ways and means committeve the power to request trumps tax returns and yet trump told reporters yesterday he would just flat out ignore the request using thely same obviousalse excuse hes been using since 2016 hes under audit and towards the end of his rambling answer, he found a way to start bragging about his businesses while im under audit, i wont do it. U if im noter audit, i would do it. I had no problem with it but while im under audit, i would not give my taxes. Theres no low whatsoever. Now, i will say this i would love to give them, butto im not going o it while im under audit. What i have done is approximately a 104page summary, and really in great detail, of assets and values and nobody wants to go over that, because its so good i built a great company. One of the best companies. I have some of the greatest assets in the world. I did a good job seth well now hes just doing affirmations in public [ light laughter ] i didi good job. Good at business my wife does like me. Also, can you please just drop this dumb audit excuse its obviously fake. Youve been saying it since 2016th es no way its taking the irs three years to go through your tax returns t d if it has, that doesnke you look great if you told someone it took you a week to clean your kitchen, theyd be like, how [ bleep ] up was your kitchen . [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause while trump is just ignoring the law on tax returns, hes also sounding increasingly unhinged on the russia investigation. Now because trump keeps lying about it, we have to just take p stack here and remember how all of this got started. Russia hacked the democrats emails while they were doing business deals with trump and making contact with trump campgn officials and the entire time these people were lying about it. And then when the fbi started investigating it, trump asked the director to shut it down and pledge his loyalty to trump. And when he refused, trump fired him. And th h he said on tv he fired a him because of the russi investigation. He told the russians he fired him because of the russian investigation. And then because his Republican Attorney general had recused himself, h republican Deputy Attorney general appointed a special counsel, robert mueller, who is a registered republican [ light laughter ] and, while this was happening, putin also gave trump a soccer ball [ laughter and applause which was definitely, definitely the first time trump ever saw a soccer ball. Ht [ laug ] thank you for this beautiful gift im going to say a russian [ light laughter ] and it probably has, when you open it, a littler bowling ball in it. [ laughter ] and then anothen little one and a ittle one. [ applause ] hopefully at the end, a tiny marshmallow. I wish i didnt have to keep recapping all this stuff every time we talk about it. O im starting tthink were just gonna need a permanent scroll that stays up thro show the [ light laughter ] but i have to keep rapping it, because trump keeps lying about it yesterday, his attorney general repeated trumps Conspiracy Theory that his campaign was spied on tand then trump suggested investigation was somehow illegal or unwarranted, and even said the people investigating him were traitors. It was an illegal investigation. It was start illegally everything about it was crooked. Every single thing about it. There were dirty cops. These were bad people. And this was an attempted coupn this was aattempted takedown of a president and everybody knew it. Tch hunt, and they knew it, too. And they got caught. S and what they did watreason. Seth my god, man now youre accusing people of coups and treason. Id say you should start growing didictator beardbubut baseonon your actual hair, im not sure how that would look. [ laughter andpplause this is why its crucial that g decisions involvine Mueller Report remain independent of trump. And yet yesterdawhen his attorney general william barr was asked if he briefed the white house on the Mueller Report, barrs answer was very evasive. Has anyone in the white house seen any of the report you know, im not gonna im not gonna as i said, im landing the plane right now. And, uh, y know, ive been willing to discuss my my letters and the process going forward. But the report is going to be out next week. And im just not going to get into the details of the process until the plane is on the ground seth the plane has been on the ground mueller landed the plane youre the crew guy refusing to drive the little gatingy up to the door [ laughter ] so we can get off the plane. This is why [ cheers and applause this is why we need aggressive oversight of the trump administration, whether its on the Mueller Report or his tax returns. And yet republicans are doing the opposite they are protecting him. For example, after the democratic chairman of the house ways and Means Committee richarneal submitted his formal request to the irs for trumps tax returns, louisiana senator john kennedyent on tv and straight up called neal a moron. Chairman neal, powerful man, head of ways and means i know hes an adult, but i dont think hes like a real adult. [ light laughter ] he says that he needs trumps he says its policy not politics he has said, i think on cnn, that the reason he needs them is that he needs to determine how well the irs is auditing taxpayers. I cant believe he really thinks the American People are gonna fall for that. It must really suck to be that dumb [ laughter ] seth it doesnt suck to be that dumb, it sucks fohayour boss to be tdumb thats the guy you answer to maybe think about where your life is at youre a United States senatord u take marching orders from a guy who once got on air force one withoioilet paper [ laughter ] shoe. Republicans in Congress Keep trying to defend trump from democrats, but their efforts keep falling flat. And the dumbest example of that came this week ding a hearing on trumps climate policies. Democrats called former secretary of state john kerry as a witness and during the hearing republican congressman Thomas Massie from kentucky tried to question kerrys credentials. Specifically his college degree. Kerry has a bachelor of arts in Political Science, a common degree that lots of people have. And yet mass thought it was some kind of brilliant gotcha to point that out, resulting in one of the dumbest lines of questioning in the history of american politics. It sounds like youre questioning the credentials of the president s advisers currently. But i dont think we should question your credentials today. Isnt it true you have a science degree from yale whats that . Bachelor of arts degree is it a Political Science degreeti yes, polil science. So how do you get a bachelor of arts in a science [ laughter ] well, its liberal Arts Education and degreehe its alor. Okay, so its not really science. So i think its somewhatth appropriate somebody with a pseudoscience degree is here pushing pseudoscience in front of our committee today i want to ask you are you serious [ laughter ] i mean, this really a serious happening here seth it is unfortunately [ cheers and applause unfortunel im sorry to say it is a serious happening. [ ght laughter ] and that is the perfect phrasing because this whole trump era feels like a horror movie called a serious happening. [ laughter ] this is an aual member of congress who cant wrap his heard around the fact that you can get a bachelor of arts degree in Political Science. E despite fact that he himself has a degree from m. I. T [ light laughter ] i mean, why stop there, massie senator kerry, youre a married man, correctpl then please exn to us how you could possibly have a bachelors degree. [ laughter ] [ applause ] also, not at anything matters anymore, but thats the same john kerry who was falselyit crized by conservatives not for avoiding vietnam, but for going and supposedly doing a bad job. Meanwhile these same conservatives now heap praise on lieutenant bone spurs over here, whose only purple heart is the t one strugglingget air through his gravyclogged veins. Agn nothing matters. Because these are the people protecting the president in congress the president refuses to release his tax returns and calls anyone who investigates him treasonousc and republs actually expect us to believe theyre the party of the constitution and the rule of law i dont know if anyone Still Believes that. If they do it must really suck to be that dumb [ laughter and applause seth toks has been a closer [ cheers and applause well be right back with more late night, everybody. [ cheers and applause announcer for more of seths closer looks be sure to subscribe to late night on youtube. burke at farmers, weve seen almost everything, so we know how to cover almost anything. [ cheersnd applause seth ur first guest tonight is an Academy Award and emmynominated actor you know from his work in the star wars films and the hbo series girls. He returns to broadw alongside keri russell in burn this,ic whh opens tuesday, april 16th at the hudson theatre. Please welcome back to the show our friend adam driver, everybody. [ cheers and applause seth welcome back. Thanks. Thanks for having me seth im very happy to have you here congrats on the play thanks. Seth you and keri russell play two characters in mourning in this play yeah. Seth but yet, i i want to [ laughter ] im in mourning seth i was going to say there are laughs in the play but they obviously thought the mourning part was funny. [ laughter ] but you have found humor in the part this was a play you were familiar with though it was but i dont think we knew to the first preview that we thought we didnt think it was very funny but i guess its funny. [ laughter ] seth well even here, i mn i said mourning and they went crazy, yeah. [ laughter ] yeah, mourning is really in right now. Seth it is really but its very high intenty part but you had performed at juilliard years ago. Yeah, but i mean its like at school and you only do it four times. Seth right and it feels like very much like kids in cosugmes. [ laer ] i was 23 and now, im actually sadly the age of the character so its like before you just like, oh, i didnt derstand anything. I didnt know how to make tea. Like tea is a big part of this play [ laughter ] so many things i didnt really know seth yeah. I mean, by 23, you probably should have known how to make a. [ laughter ] yeah, yeah, i know lots of things seth you did it ilth your wife at juard . I did, yeah, yeah seth has she come and seen it with you and keri yet yeah, yeah, shes been a couple of times. She has to come. Seth is that one of the les . Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because then shes brutally honest seth oh, thats really good. So you getrutal im very lucky as well. My wife will come and see me and be brutally honest asset. This truly, its an no, it is, yeah, yeah and you know theres somebody booing, its usually her [ laughter ] seth yeah. Shes like, boooo. Seth my wife does it with a look yeah. Seth shes not aud ile but evena really dark room, i can tell that she doesnt like something. Yeah, i know. But joanne is more open with her hatred seth did you know ri russell before this i did, because actually, the last play i did was five years ago with matthew seth oh, wow, matthew reese. Matthew reese seth yes so i kind of knew her through mattw. Seth and as i mentioned the intensity, do you find it i mean, its been a while, yous, said five yeo you find it going from film, which is a little bit slower obviously, to the intensity of doing a show every night has been hard to shift back um yeah. I meanits just its just kind of wildly its always wildly different and even every night, its different obviously. Because the audience in a way,li ke, kind of like i was talking about inhehe first preview, kind of obvious, i guess. They kind of teach ya about the play in t. And their energy, theres like kind of collective intelligence in the room that kind of lets you know if its working or its not. And as you know, even with Something Like this, it feeds you or it doesnt. Seth yes or you know they pick up things [ cheers and applause [ ughter ] the audience is paramount. Seth yeah. So its not us is doing bad, its the audience. Seth yeah, absolutely. I thank you for making that clear. Ive wanted to say it but you really put it into words well. [ laughter ] hugh jackman talked about when he went back on stage after the xmen films, it was he lked about how it was strange having oh, there were like theyre now different kinds of fans come to see my show st Star Wars Franchise of oh, there are people in this theater, maybe that wouldnt have been drawn in the theater ahead of time. Yeah. Actually i go to the stage door afterwards andeet people afterwards, which has been interesting. Because the plays i did before, i would just go home seth yeah. [ laughter ] so im just surprised by fa in general seth right, right. [ laughter ] its all very new to me but a lot of people have been saying its the first time theyve been to a play, which i love that. You know, because we do this nonprofit. Ive had like theater fixes along the way where, you know, arts in the armed forces where, we do contemporary american plays and read it for a military audience so iind of got the been doing those for the past five years and got you know, when you take theater outside of new york, then it kind of becomes a weapon in a way. Because, almost new york audiences can kind of get, like, oh, ive seen every, yo production of hedda gabler, and tell you which one is good or not seth yeah. R but a lot of ouaudience, its been very, like, kind of, its like a dream as far as how diverse it is, how young it is, how old i guess would be the opposite seth yeah. [ lahter ] so its a mixture a lot of people at the stage door to get back to where it started. Nd and kif said that this is the first time they had seen a play, which is really exciting to me. Seth you obviously cant watch your stage work but you ul watch your film work but you do not like to do that right, well because im used to doing plays came from a theater background so it never really equated to me that why would i want to watch seth yeah. So long as i know what it feels like, thats good enough for me seth but then it was problematic because you were an actual star wars fan, so you then could you not watch thes new r wars movies [ laughter ] i did i did. I did. Ieiends afterwards, like, ouou didnt watch our movie but you watched star wars. But f ure standing in front o the screen, and theyre like, trust , your lightsaber is rking. Seth yeah. Or theres space behind you, it looks really cool [ laughter ] so when youre like just standing in a rainy back lot, it doesnt seem very impressive seth yeah. You dont feel like youre commanding anybody other than sticks and pingpong balls seth i did once go to a set that was green screen and i was ally excited and i had this real moment where i was like, oh, im not supposed to be here. Right, right. Us seth jwatching a really good actor act with like a, you know, a tennis ball on a stick, youre like like i have this in my basement seth yeah. I could just watch star warsin y basement right [ laughter ] blackkklansman, congratulations on your nomination oh, thank you very much [ [ chee a a a applause seth i know that that so when that premieres at cannes, do you skip that outto like, i mean, obviously, youre invited to the premiere. Yes, yeah well, cannes is very like theyre very i dont want to say serious because youre kind of like, yeah, films are is this important. Li you walk up this, like, kind of, sacrificial steps like youre going to kill a goat together or something. Seth yeah. [ laughter ] and then everyone goes in and we watch a movie but you have to be back becausec the lightse up, and then they put the camera where you were sitting and if youre not there, it oks bad. So i just go into a room and then wait, you know, with a guy in silence [ laughter ] and then, you ow, okay, now i got to go back and sneak in and then pretend like i was there the whole time. Seth i mean, i get not wanting to watch yourself. But being willing to do the oher, i mean, like, going to dinner is one thing but, like, going in a room with a stranger, i feel like. Yeah, yeah. Seth you should just try to push through and watch the movie. [ laughter ] i know, right yeah, i guess that does sound really bleek [ laughter ] it always seems like a better alternative than watching all the mistakes that youre making thats now immortalized on film forever. Sh yeah. Real quick because you mentioned arts in the armed forces weve talked before about your military background. How many years now running is this ten years seth ten yearsit weve been doing or ten years. [ cheers and applause seth thats amazing. Yeah, thank you seth and i assume you keep doing it because youre getting such good feedback is it growing as well . Are you getting out to more people yeah, when we started, we were still students at juilliar an were doing it like in our apartment. We were hand typing, you know, on a typewriter because we thought that was very cool [ laughter ] thank you notes to people. We had enough for one performance a year thats all we could do while we were still students. And now we have incredible donors and were doing 15 performances already this year we just came back fromort leavenworth. And we have like branched out and have done this play righting grant, 10,000 to anyone in the military to write a play by anything about pgpong balls seth right i know im referencing you. [ laughter ] seth i that guy. So were kind of exploring what the whole arts not just theater, but well still do, you know, have like its traveling f troupe otors that go around the world performing for military audiences, either veterans, servicemen and women and their families, at any base or we do annual performance on broadway every year. Seth thats great. Thanks for doing that, and thanks for being here, man its always su a pleasure. Thank you [ cheers and applause seth i really appreciate it. Seth i think that came in in the cliper youre a vnice person. Thank you seth do you enjoy playing mean people, though . I loved it. Seth yeah. Yeah. [ laughter ] you know, its great bveause you dont o apologize. Youre just rolling through. I can say i was in character and be a monster [ laughter ], you knowcan be sam method. But no, it was fun cause no one was, you know, no one took it personally they knew. Seth took it personally. Rightou seth yot to you were in atlanta, yes . I was in atlanta. Seth so when you go to atlanta, you did not stay at a hotel, which is what i would have expected. N i always stay at the same place, which is kind of an airbnb that i love and this time so, when were shooting ttle, the guy says, oh, you know, tyra banks is your the building. And i have done ras show but i dont know her well. But i was like, oh, im gonna go say hi. So, this particular she was right across the hall. I mean, like, right like right there. Seth okay. See you fred . [ laughter ] seth okay. Right there so im gonna go over, and i goon and im like, i d want to yell my name its a pretty big building. So, i dont want to say, tyra, its regina hall. So i go, and im like right in the doorway. Im like, its regina. [ laughter ] now i didnt think about the fact that she i was distorted through the peephole seth yeah. [ light laughter ] so they dont open the door seth but theyre there i oh,ear. Shes trying to disguise her voice. Seth okay. [ laughter ] she brings her mother goes. Her mother goes, how can we help are you okay . [ laughter ] cause they are wondering am i woman in crisis . Seth uhhuh. Or a woman trying to do a setup . Eth gotcha. And take her and the mother and the baby [ light laughter ] so, i go, you know what im gonna write a note. I go to mine you know, back to my apartment. I write a note but the note is in code, because if its not her seth right i dont want to put my name and information seth gotcha. Right [ laughter ] seth youve really ca e now then im being kidnapped. Seth yeah. Youve created quite a conunumum for yourself there [ laughter ] i ss i mean, i was and whats so great about this building is that its airtight so the note cant fit under the door [ light laughter ] so im literally trying to squeeze it so i go home, and i go, you know what . We have a hair person in common, oscar james. And i said, im gonna call oscar, and just say, oscar, can you tec tyra that was me . Se i signed the note r. Seth okay. [ light laughter ] but i told her the room i was in i was like, but i in apartment if you want to come check me out. Seth okay, gotcha. So i just go in and im like, fine, whatever, and i get a and i look out and its security [ laughter ]le tyra cald security and said that, either a woman needed help or was trying to get in her apartment. [ laughter ] and then security and then i look, shes around the corner and the Security Guard goes, ugh, you actresses. [ laughter ]ye he was so annoand disgusted. Yes, so ive had alopecia since i was three years old. And it was only just like little spots, so i kind of kept it hidden my whole life and kind of a byproduct of that was i just had so much shameit surrounding you know, i didnt want anyone to find out about it and so, obviously, i went into acting, because why not, you know [ laughter ] and at a certain point, i was shooting this other tv show and utlike half my hair fell ond my eyebrows and eye lashes and i knew i like couldnt hide it anymore. So a lot of people told me i wa never goin work again. I wasnt attractive anymore. And, you know, here i am now so im like really happy about thatec but i made the dion to kind of just embrace my new look.
