In news 4 your health today, following your doctors recommendation is usually the best course to protect your good health. But sometimes thats just not enough. And trusting your own judgment might make all the difference. Doreen gentzler has the story of one womans medical journey and her message. Doreen . Hi, jim. Angela ball lives in bowie, maryland. She works for nbc universal. When she felt a lump in her breast in 2016, she followed doctors instructions and had a mammogram and she had an ultrasound. The doctors told her everything was doesnt end there. The thing that bothered me was that no one had informed me of my right to get a 3d examination. And apparently the 3d exams are going to be most beneficial for patients with dense breasts. Dense breast tissue pretty common especially among africanamerican women, and it can make identifying breast tumors more challenging. Its an important part of this story. Angela ball started having yearly mammograms four years ago at age 38. Thats sooner than doctors usually recommend. She started early because africanamerican women have a higher risk of developing Breast Cancer at a younger age. They tend to get it under the age of 50 more often than white women. And were getting it under the age of 50, it does tend to be more aggressive. Ball thought she was being proactive. She felt a lump and acted quickly to investigate. They called me back and they said, youre going to need followup imaging and i went and everything came out normal. Thats the news we all want to hear, right . But soon ball felt some pain in that same breast, and even though the test had just come back negative, she went back to her gynecologist who wisely sent her for another mammogram and ultrasound. And that time they determined there was a suspicious finding and then i went straight to get a biopsy examination. And within days i had been diagnosed with stage 2 Breast Cancer. Trusting her instincts might have saved angela balls life. Now she had to make some choices. But in my case, i knew that i wanted to do the bilateral mastectomy because of the fact that when i had my mri, multiple tumors were presented and it was going to be very difficult to proceed with a aluminumectomy. Dr. Regina hanson treats in Prince Georges County county. She told us one critical tool in getting accurate diagnosis for women with dense breast tissue is so, 3d mammography has been found to find 20 to 30 more cancers and find them at earlier stages. Today angela ball is cancer free. Had she known a 3d mammogram was available and a better option for her, she says she would have had that first. Thats why she wants to get the word out to other women who know they have dense breast tissue. Thats kind of been my message since that false diagnosis. If you know you have dense breasts, get the 3d imaging. If i had waited until my next mammogram the following october, i dont know how far advanced my cancer would have been. And the other lesson from angela balls story, trust your own instincts when it comes to your health. If youre uncertain about something, ask more questions. Get a second opinion. Be your own avenue ka. It could make all the difference. We dont always know the questions to ask. Right. That was the case there. You trust yur right. But, you know, maybe in that case, maybe the question was, is there another test that might be more accurate at detecting whats going on here. Good for her. Shes doing well. Smart, good for her.
