The film nominated for a golden globe yesterday. Yeah. Seth congratulations on that. Thank you. Seth and for those who dont know, this is based on the making of an actual film called the room. Yeah, theres a movie called the room. Not room with brie larson. Which is a great movie. Seth yeah, exactly. And Jacob Tremblay is darling and emotionally available. [ light laughter ] but this is a movie called the room. With tommy wiseau, who james franco plays. He wrote it, directed it, stars in it, produced it, financed it himself. Marketed it himself. And it is known for being one of the worst movies of alltime. Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] and its so bad, that it actually developed, like, a cult following. And people, like me, started seeing it. With their friends and telling people te rocky Horror Picture Show esque experience where it was kind of interactive with the audience and they would participate in kind of just the glory of how absolutely, ridiculously terrible it is. To the point that people started liking it, though. And honestly, like, i watched it so many times, i kind of love it. And we made a whole movie about it. And there is something great about it. And because you keep watching it. Like, and if it was bad, you were like, why am i watching this over and over again . Why have i seen this more than ive seen, like, good movies . Seth yeah. Like and so, yeah. Its endlessly fascinating subject. Seth who introduced it to you . It came out in 2003. Did you see it pretty early on do you think . Yeah, i saw it about a yearandahalf maybe after it came out. Paul rudd i think was the first one who mentioned it to me. And he had seen it. And then i went and saw it with my wife who i was dating at the time and jonah hill and ed helms actually. Seth wow. At the sunset laemmle five. And it was mostly empty. And there was just kind of but its catastrophically, bizarrely bad. [ laughter ] seth i so i knew about the movie. I hadnt seen it. But i used to when i would visit l. A. , would you see this billboard. And this billboard was up for a while. Years, years. And thats the marketing i was referring to. Tommy paid to keep that up. It had a website. Theroommovie. Com. There was a phone number and you would call it, and you didnt need to, because you could just go to the theater and buy tickets. And the phone number was just tommys phone number and he would just answer the phone and just say, like, are you coming to movie . [ laughter ] and you would be like, yeah. Im coming to the movie. And he would be like, great, see you there. And that was the entirety of the interaction. And there was also he ran tv commercials really late at night that i had seen a few of. And i asked him about it, and he said, they were on so late at night, they were free. [ laughter ] like, it was literally at a time when there was just nothing else. Yeah. Seth its fantastic. You were a producer on the film from the start. Yeah. Seth and but then you decide to play a part. We saw the part you were playing there in the clip. How did you decide to play that character . Oh, he was like the only guy around my age, i think. But seth youre making producing sound very easy. Well, yeah. And i played sandy schklair, is his name and he was a script supervisor of the room. And kind of, sort of directed it a little bit. As you can see, he kind of like calls action and helps with the lines. And he later claimed he directed the movie. Which shows what a weird thing it is, because its a bad movie. Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] so this guy is taking credit for it. Like, were suing, hoarding the credit for creating something that is only famous because its bad. Its so weird. Its a very weird thing, yeah. Seth does do you think tommy, looking back, is happy . Obviously, this film has succeeded to a place where its being adapted by all these great actors and writers and yeah. Seth but it was not what he set out to make. No. And that is like an interesting moment to me, is like he did have to kind of readjust what his goal was. He had to pretend his goal was to make a ridiculous comedy, whereas his goal was really to make like a heartfelt drama. [ laughter ] but he but he but he but his goal was also to become a famous movie star. Which he kind of is now in some way. And a famous filmmaker, which he kind of is now in some way. Like, i mean, we had a james franco plays him in the movie. He wanted johnny depp, but we got james franco. [ laughter ] but, yeah. But whats weird is like he seems i was just looking at him at the premier. And it was a big premier and like a lot of famous people were there. A lot of famous people were at the movie. And he is behaving in such a way as though he always expected it to happen. And, like, i was saying my only other experience is i played Steve Wozniak in a movie. And like, that guy invented computers and he was blown away we were making a movie about him. [ light laughter ] like, he couldnt believe it. This guy made the worst movie of alltime and its as though not only was he expecting a movie to be made about him, hes a little pissed it wasnt five years ago, basically. [ laughter ] and that johnny depp isnt playing him. And instead james franco is. Hes a weird dude. [ laughter ] seth you you saw him before even you began to talk about adapting the story. You would see him in l. A. You saw him at Grocery Stores . I would see him at whole foods. Me and jonah actually would shop at the same whole foods and he first saw him there and sent me a picture of him like in front of, like, cantaloupes with tommy. [ light laughter ] and i was like, oh, my god. I knew i was like and i would keep my eye out open for him. And i saw him one time and i took a picture with him. And and then years later when we were making a movie, he like instantly, you take picture with me one time at grocery store. [ laughter ] you big fan of mine. You real big fan of mine. You like me. Yeah, tommy. Seth he had to settle for james, playing him. Yes. Seth james is fantastic. Hes amazing in the movie. Seth james is interesting, because tommy seems to just be weird. James is normal, but then has a great capacity for weirdness. Yes, he does. Seth and he directed the film. Yes. Seth did a beautiful job, but is it true he stayed in character . He did stay in character the whole time we were making the movie. As tommy. He would speak in the tommy voice and he was in prosthetic makeup. And hes directing the movie. And i probably the first time anyones ever directed a movie in character. [ laughter ] seth yeah, you hear about the other yeah you dont seth like actors stay in character but for a director to stay in character. And in the movie, hes directing a movie. So its also weird. [ laughter ] yeah. It was it was really strange. And i would warn everyone who came to the set, because a lot of actors have small roles in the movie. And i would be like, before you step onset, know, like, this is not a normal situation youre stepping into. [ laughter ] like, its super weird. You never know if hes and hes directing the movie. In the movie. And were shooting scenes in the movie where hes directing a movie. And, yeah, and i was just like, just go with it, man. Just ride it out. And everyone was very cool. It confused my grandmother, though. She just didnt [ laughter ] she came to set and talked to james for like ten minutes. And she had met him many times. And then he walked away and shes like, wheres james franco . [ laughter ] and, like i was thinking, like, do i even try to explain whats happening . And then i was just like, james isnt here today. [ laughter ] seth there are fantastic cameos throughout the film. Yeah, many. Seth a lot of funny people, including nathan fielder. Yes. Seth who im a huge fan of. Me too, hes brilliant. Seth you guys grew up together. In vancouver. We did. We went to Elementary School and high school together. And we were on the High School Improv team together. Seth this is a great photo of, like it seems like these are normal dudes here. Yeah. Seth theres nathan sort of creep and you very [ laughter ] it looks like im planning the murder of them. Seth yeah, exactly. It looks like its a horror movie and youve like like this parts been folded under for years. Seth yeah, right. And then and then theres a moment where they reveal it. Its like, oh, no seths there. [ laughter ] hes looking super creepy for no reason. Seth yeah, the detective folds it over, and its like, we need to find that guy. Wheres that one . Seth this is also an era i can tell you every one of the kids in this picture, that was each one of them, that was the only tie they owned. Oh yeah, 100 percent. Seth dont you think that and that was our thing as an improv team. We wore ties. Seth oh, wow. Wow. What was what was nathan like as an improviser . He was funny. He was always very funny and he played up the uncomfortable that was kind of his thing was making things very uncomfortable. Which hes continued to make an incredible career of. Seth so, congratulations. The show has already picked up for a third season. It is. Seth the Second Season has not aired here yet, but it has aired in the uk. What has the response been so far . Well, yeah, it seems to have been it seems to have been good. Seth yeah. Yeah. Seth usually when they pick up a third season, it means two went pretty good. Yeah. Seth yeah. Yeah, i think the main problem that we have is theres lots of babies to be had. Seth yeah, now this is interesting, because victoria had nine kids . Nine. Seth and you have four on the show so far. Yeah, the fourth is on his way. Seth okay, the fourth is on his way. Yeah, but often we have twins in the child hours as well. So really, i mean, theres going to be times where there could be, like, 18. We dont know. Seth have you had any have you come up with any solutions for how to keep all those babies happy while youre trying to film . Oh, yeah, theres lots of tactical methods. We dress up the parents as nursemaids. Seth okay, thats very smart. Yeah, i mean seth so, you put them in like period garb and they get to be yeah, yeah, yeah. Seth thats fantastic. If you really watch closely, see there is probably a different nursemaid every scene. Its either the grandmothers in that day, or the dad, or the you know. The dad doesnt dress as the nurse. Seth okay. [ laughter ] no. Seth if you want, there is a real mrs. Doubtfire storyline going through. Yeah, just dont listen to us. Just look whats going on behind us. Seth yeah. You actually read to prepare you read personal diaries of Queen Victoria. Yeah. Seth thats incredible. Does everyone have access to those, or did they just sort of pass them on to you because you were going to play the part . No, i didnt actually theyre online. So you can actually google seth she put them online . [ laughter ] no, she, okay yeah no. Shes very mediasavvy. Seth yeah. But theyre online. Theyre accessible so you can type in todays date, and go back 1841 and she seth and she wrote quite a bit, yeah . Yeah, shell be like, rose, 9 am well, really like 6 am, had breakfast alone. You know. Its theyre really, really detailed. [ laughter ] seth that what you gave me wasnt that detailed. More detailed than my seth but its funny cause it does seem like the royals do that, because they were recently rise and eat breakfast . Seth yeah, they all eat breakfast. I know. Seth i think thats the thing. Thats why theyve ruled for so long. I know. Seth they know its the most important meal of the day. It really is. [ laughter ] it really is. Seth youve had to learn how to do some things. Yes. Seth waltz, yes . Uhhuh. Seth have you had to learn to speak any Foreign Languages to play the part . Ive had to learn i kind of had a weird boot camp, a victorian boot camp. Seth okay. Which i highly recommend. Seth oh yeah, i would love to. Its you kind of seth how many days would you give yourself in that boot camp to be fully victorian at the end of it . I would say a good three weeks. Seth okay. Three weeks. Okay. Youd have to learn to ride side saddle. Seth okay. You have to learn to waltz. Seth yeah. You have to learn the voice. Seth yeah. And also, which the producers threw at me, which, thank you very much, was some german opera. Seth oh, you had to do german opera . Yeah. Seth how did that go for you . Not well. Seth yeah, cause it seems to me you either have it, or you dont. I mean, you can learn the german, but if you dont have the opera, its all for naught. Yeah. I couldnt learn the german. Never mind the opera. Seth oh, well then you were, then v i was writing emails like, you know i really think that i should be dubbed. I really think seth oh, did they in the end but they did use your voice. Yeah, they did, and then i decided, i was like, i think its a character choice. I think Queen Victoria is a really bad singer. I think shes probably awful. Dont you . Seth and then you forged in the diary, like 11 15, bad at singing. [ laughter ] terrible again. No improvement. [ laughter ] seth so you was your family excited when you got cast as someone as iconic as the queen . Yeah, yeah. I mean theyre just theyre very cool. Theyre very excited if im happy, and, but, yeah, there was often the joke were not going to curtsy to you now. Seth right. Clean your room. Seth you did manage to pull a nice catch here for your this is your your grandfather came, and did a day on the set. Yeah. Seth thats fantastic. Can i just say, my granddad is now so famous. This is my granddad, and he came to play man in crowd. Seth oh wow. How was he . He was great. He was literally just wanting me to take pictures of him all day to send to his friends. [ laughter ] and we had to drive past on a carriage before getting well, an assassination attempt, and he had to wave. [ laughter ] seth did you does he have any acting background, or was this no, but i think he thinks i think hes going to start. Seth yeah. I think hes got the bug. Seth well, again, when you saw that scene, he was definitely in the crowd. Yeah, he was. Yeah. Seth yeah, i mean you cant deny that he didnt fully get into the part. No, but he did go home at lunch time. Seth really . Yeah, he got bored. [ laughter ] seth he was that was it. He was done. The people are going to look back, and be like i think thats the guy who tried to assassinate, because he was there and then he disappeared. Yeah, exactly. Seth theyre going to try to find him. Hes now going to try, and up his role. Seth exactly. You also were in another iconic british show, doctor who. Yes. Seth and did you [ cheers and applause ] i asked matt smith, who played the doctor when he was here, did he have any sense of how exactly intense the what was your experience like when you took on the role . Oh. No, i had no idea, like absolutely no idea. The only thing i remember was the secrecy around it, and the paranoia of you know, everyone was speaking in codes. I was auditioning for a show called men on waves. Seth oh, wow. We werent allowed to say doctor who. But i literally had no idea until i finished the first series, and came out to america, and suddenly, yeah, it was it was a whole new universe. Seth were people more excited here than they had been in the uk about your doctor who experience . I dont know. Because the thing is with doctor who, youre locked away filming for like ten months a year. Seth sure. And then you suddenly pop up at like comiccons, and loads of people scream, and then you go back to shooting and running away from aliens again. Seth yeah. Its kind of seth thats a nice life. It is. Seth that is the cycle of an actors life. Yeah. Seth and then youre on a carriage and your grandfather is in the crowd, and youre like, wow, this is a crazy life im living. Thanks so much.
