Yes, so this one im not sure if its the same in america, but that means up seth yeah. And i remember doing it at school, and being like [ laughter ] seth yeah. Whereas this one on the other hand is very different, thats v for victory, kind of the peace sign. Seth sure. I guess it started there maybe. Dont know if thats true, but yeah. Seth youre not an expert on this one, youre an expert on i know this one really [ laughter ] this originated seth this one im not quite sure. Its either a v, or like a bird, but this one its just fun to do like now, on tv. Seth so that, again, i feel every time i show a clip from this film i have to tell people thats gary oldman. Yeah. Seth who is unrecognizable as Winston Churchill. Were you a fan of garys before this film . Yeah, i think hes one of the very great actors that we have and he i love true romance. Thats one of my favorite movies. So to see him go from like that dreadlocked drug dealer, and then suddenly seeing him as churchill was insane. Seth it really does speak to an actors range, because no one watching true romance would say, there, we found our churchill. Churchill, there he is. Yeah. [ laughter ] sethi i know you just finished filming mama mia 2. You were a huge fan of yeah, give it up for mama mia [ cheers and applause ] seth like them you were also a huge fan. How many times had you seen mama mia . Well, somewhere between like eight and ten. Seth yeah. I was obsessed im an obsessive really which is seth thats okay. Thats okay. Seth i think its good that you know. I used to every year for my birthday my parents would take me to see a show, and i went to mama mia several times, and i love abba, and so it was a lot of my friends have been in the west end show so theres kind of like a whole group of us that have been in like a little family. Yeah. Seth and just the excitement of getting to be in this show that meant a lot to you, you play a Young Meryl Streep, so that what is more stressful, playing a Young Meryl Streep or playing Winston Churchills personal secretary . Because both seem to be very high stress roles. I mean, meryl. Seth yeah, i mean young meryl. That is quite an undertaking. Yeah, i mean both parts were intimidating, elisabeth layton, who i play is a real person, she worked for churchill through the whole of the second world war, and was so dedicated, and incredible and her stories are fascinating, but then meryls meryl. Like [ laughter ] seth yeah. So, it was it is intimidating, but i was just, yeah. Seth i just hope one day, what i would love is, id love you to retell the churchill story to abba music. Like fully bring them together. [ laughter ] that would be great. Seth you injured yourself on set on mama mia. Yes . I did. Seth what did you do to yourself . I currently have a broken toe. Im really accidentprone. Seth okay. Actually during that shoot, i stood on a rusty nail, i broke my toe, i danced too much in a beach club in croatia where we filmed, and cut my whole feet in flipflops. So its a wonder ive actually managed to dance at all. Seth it is you dont think of thabe film, its not like you shot the avengers. We really didnt. No. Seth oh, lilys in bad shape. What from . Mama mia 2. Yeah, it really took it out of me. Seth she really she danced way too much. I did dance way too much. Seth i want to ask, we have had since the news, weve had many british guests on the show. Im always curious to ask, are you excited about the royal wedding. Yes, i am. Seth okay, so you are. I am. I am. I find it really exciting. I think theyre, you know, inspiring, and theyre going to do good, and i couldnt help but watch there video interview, and be like, oh theyre so in love. Seth it was a really charming video interview. It was. They were holding each others hands. Seth yeah, yeah. I will admit that i went into it with a cynics heart, and then i watched that video, and thought, oh, good for them. Yeah, yeah, me too, me too. Yeah. Seth yeah, its nice. Im like, you know what, good for you. Live your life and live that life in a palace. Seth you know what . I think you two are going to be all right. Yeah. Seth for those who dont know, we were both hired in 2001 for a little show called saturday night live. We started together. Thats right. We came up together. Seth yeah, and for those who also forget 2001 was a very weird time to start working at saturday night live. Thats right. We got our job, we threw our hats in the the air. Were going to make it after all, and then two weeks later, 9 11 happened. Seth 9 11 happened, all the hats came back on i know. Seth and do you remember what happened just like a month after that . We had anthrax in the building. Seth yeah. Good times. Seth yeah, it was the last thing that made you want to write comedy. No, but remember right after 9 11, we were saying, okay well at least the worst is over, its all uphill from here, and then literally we came into work and some guy named Tommy Thompson said you all have anthrax. Seth yeah. That was fun. Seth and then we said well well get back to our sketches then. I know. [ laughter ] i think we did fish genitals. Seth yeah, we did, we did a sketch about fish genitals to help america heal. We showed them. [ laughter ] seth no, this is crazy. So you wrote the zombie survival guide. Right. Seth which obviously zombies, not real, but the guide was written in such a way with actual dealing with crisis that the military reached out to you. Yeah, shocking. I wrote zombie survive guide, and then a little book called world war z. Seth there you go. [ cheers and applause ] and then out of the blue the Naval War College asked for me, and i thought thats cute, who is this really . Aney we want you to come speak, and from there i kept getting these invitations to Different Military forums, and before i knew im a fellow at the modern War Institute westpoint in the atlantic council. Seth now, see my thing is if the same thing had happened to me, and they reached out my first instinct, would be like, oh [ bleep ] zombies are real. [ laughter ] right, which did cross my mind. Seth right. Well actually what crossed my mind was when i stood up in front of this room, i thought okay you mixed up your paperwork and theres a Lieutenant Commander max brooks somewhere at comiccon. Seth yeah exactly, and you actually were just in d. C. Today. Yeah, literally today. Its why i look so tired. I literally was at a conference, the army futures forum. Seth wow. Yeah. Its where they invite all these important military people, scientists, academics, all these important people, and me. [ laughter ] and we are all trying to help the military adapt to this ever changing world. Seth thats fantastic. Another so your new book is about the world of minecraft. Yes. Seth for those who dont know this is a game, a video seem like a fair way to describe minecraft. No, no, and thats the crazy thing. You know, most video games, the games that we grew up on are very linear, its right way, wrong way, go up the next level, shoot something in the face, and then keep going up, and thats it. Minecraft is essentially life. You are on your own world, its all blocks, but you have to survive. You have to make sure you dont starve, and when the darkness comes, so do zombies. Seth and you play it with your 12yearold . Oh yeah, no, no. We play it all the time. There are two modes, theres creative, and theres survival, and i explained to him, creative is when everything is just given to you without earning it, its the equivalent of you living in my house. [ laughter ] and then eventually youre going to go on survival mode, and have to survive, and theres a game for you to practice. Seth you took your 12yearold to amsterdam, was that creative or survival . [ laughter ] theres no game for this. Theres no scenario. Basically i did everything wrong, and ive learned when you see an alleyway, and you think its just an alleyway, and youre walking through, and your all these women naked seth yeah. And you look side to side, and theres, you know, working girls working hard. [ laughter ] seth yeah. You learn what you should do is just say, okay, well, you know, this is their culture, and they dont take its not a big deal, its just like ours. Thats what you do. What you dont do is smack your hand over their face, and grab them by the head, and try to drag them out by the heels while your wife is laughing so hard she cant breathe. Seth yeah. That you do not do. Seth no that probably just sets them back. No, no. Seth if anything theyre like i got to get back to amsterdam. Oh yeah, no, yes. Now theres a map of the world with a giant dart on amsterdam. Seth your father is mel brooks. Do you still see him a fair amount . [ cheers and applause ] yes. I see him every night. Every night. He has a routine. In between his work, and carl reiners house, he comes over, and my son the where everythings inappropriate. And he tries to talk, and i go dont say that, dont repeat that, dont tell your teachers so my dad comes over. Grandpa, come here i got to tell you something, and they go into the play room, and i hear [ whispering ] my father, i hear him go, dont tell your teacher anything you just said. So thats our relationship. Seth and do you is it true that you have things from some of your fathers films . Are you a collector of his memorabilia . I dont know if you call it a collector. Seth right, its just your dad giving it to you. But he said, here do you want this. I go, yeah sure. So i wrote seth i collect my dads old shirts. Yeah, exactly. So i wrote this book, and i write all my books sitting on one of the swivel chairs from the bridge of spaceballs 1. Seth thats fantastic. [ cheers ] so, thats pretty cool. Seth thats great. They sit you down and they sort of take you through what feeling gs feels like. And then you have to do this like breathing technique that sounds really stupid, but its called the hick and youre supposed to go [ hick ] [ hick ] [ hick ] i walk over to the plane and they have literally put katee Starbuck Sackhoff on the side of the plane. I was so excited, like so excited. I think i started squealing. So i finally get into the plane, 6 point like 5 gs just to take and i was like, oh my god [ hick ] [ hick ] like trying not to pass out because starbuck does not pass out. Nor does she throw up. And we just start to do like these crazy maneuvers that are absolutely insane. I mean like loopdeloos and like corkscrews and like all this crazy stuff. And then he sees these navy catamarans and hes like, would you like to say hello to them . And i was like, absolutely. So he inverts the plane, goes down to like what i swear to christ was like a hundred feet above them, but it was probably a thousand whatever were going 4gs upsidedown. And i was like, oh, my god. And im hanging there and my head feels like its going to explode because you cant hic fast enough for this [ bleep ]. And then he flips the plane back over and i was like, oh, im going to throw up. I am totally going to throw up and he was like, okay, youre all right. Youre all right. Do you want to break the sound barrier . And i was like, oh, my god. It never stops. It never stops. I am Katee Sackhoff and i play vic on longmire on netflix and i play amunet black over on the cw on the flash. After battlestar, i had this like desire to sort of move away from sci fi as much as possible. Not because i didnt appreciate it. I grew up watching it with my father, but i just sort of wanted people to stop thinking of me as like, you know, someone who would punch them in the face when they saw them. So so i purposefully like tried to stay out of the genre, but i cant stay away from Strong Female characters. They seem to follow me or i follow them everywhere. So i always end up punching someone, its just not good. What are you doing . Making contingency plan. But burying guns and money . Yup. So i guess youre getting ready for the Zombie Apocalypse . Nope. Tucker baggett is coming after my home. He wants to build a golf course here. So youre going to hide in the woods and shoot at him . Vic is more me than any character ive ever played. In the beginning, vic in longmire was truly a fish out of water type of story. This was a woman who followed a man to another state, whether to support him or escape something, there was a lot of that in season one and season two. As her marriage sort of fell apart and she sort of came to the realization that that relationship wasnt necessarily what she wanted. She really started to grow as a person and figure out who she was and what she wants. And i think this season, you see a fierceness in her. Next time you want to talk, come yourself, dont send your eyehole to attack me. Did you start a fight . Honestly, norvok, its why youre my third favorite henchman. I mean what do i as never start a fight you cant finish. And that my dear is why youre my favorite. Im out, amunet. Out . Out of what . Out of options . Out of your mind . Out of the closet . Theres just so many outs for the lady in blue. So i read the character and i called the executive producer and i said, she seems british to me. He was like, really . And i was like, yeah, i think so. I think that shes just really big and fun. And like an accent doesnt its not specific. She hears little baby violins everywhere that she goes. Shes just [ bleep ] nuts. And he was like, that sounds great, go for it. So i was like, awesome. So i like showed up and play this crazy british person. The cool thing about her is that she actually controls the underground. Theyre also one third of the writers and actors behind the very funny Comedy Series known simply as teachers. As the show enters its third season, we sit down with the katies for tonights spotlight. Lets take you to Viva Hollywood for more. Katie obrien has chosen a wonderbly a wonderfully a wonderbly were off to a great start. A wonderbly [ laughter ] okay, stop. Wonderfully. Katieb you second guessed yourself when you say it again. This sweater really represents obrien because it says, like, hey, im a cool chick, im a hip chick, i love to have fun. But then there is like, i dont know, im sorry, im motioning right here. Shes basically grazing my breasts. But there is still a conservative put together, i know what im doing. This is actually a perfect katie colloton outfit. Oh, here we go. Because katie colloton is basically, and i mean this with love, is a hip grandma. Oh, no. And what i mean by that, and it is true collotons very sophisticated, but has a little bit of pizzazz and is also showing off the shoulders. Your shoulders are everything. Im katie colloton. And im katie obrien and we are a part of the comedy group, the katydids, and we are on the show teachers on tv land. The nature of the katydids is theres six of us. Were all named katie. Its really enjoyable for people. Its like a demented sorority. Whenever we see anyone and youre with the katydids, youre lik katelyn. You look like you have a mental illness. Yeah, and a lot of us do. Were a comedy group from chicago. We met in chicago at i. O. And second city. We did improv and sketch and then we created a web series, teachers, and that is what we sold to tv land. Oh, whats on your neck . What . Do you have chicken pox . No, of course not. Well, girl. I dont have it. It really looks like it. No, it doesnt look like anything because i dont have the chicken pox because i have my date tonight so stop saying that i do. Youre all becoming hysterical. Its a neck zit. Havent you ever seen a zit on a neck before . We have so many friends, our family members that are teachers, and i dont think until we started doing this show, we had any idea what teachers really went through. We get a lot of teachers giving us feedback or writing in and so its so fun that were constantly trying to push the boundaries. Heightened. Its a little bit raunchy. Its sometimes dark. But theyll write in the stories that its like, okay, i didnt even think of that. One of the things we finally got in this ten that were super excited about is every teacher has a story about a serial pooper, like a kid wont stop pooping in different places and you just find it. And i find that fascinating that that would be part of your job to just open the drawer and be like, oh, my god, theres a piece of poop. Every teacher we talked to said this is the thing. We had a whole episode about ms. Snap tweeting a word that means down there but rhymes with not or cot or ott. What if this just went for 20 minutes . Bought, trot i would just keep going. I wouldve just kept going. I know. Thank you for stopping me. We started this thing in the room last year though where kate lambert was always eating bananas, so i started taking like these hidden photos of her right as the banana was going in her mouth and then wed all send it to each other. So now, its become this thing we have thousands of photos, secret photos of people eating bananas in our room. There were a lot of, i love somebody, despite the photos being sent keeps eating bananas. I love a banana in the morning. Im not going to not eat my banana because my friends banana in the mouth. [ laughter ] we made this pact, and we were like, if the show gets picked up to series, were going to go to vegas, were going to leave right away, everybody get ready. We dressed like we were going to vegas. Yep. There and it was a tuesday afternoon and nothing was really happening. We saw thunder from down under. Really great show. And its like the chippendales. Its the male version. Its a male strip show. Yes, the quality of entertainment was i would go again. Yeah oh, for sure. But we got so into it, one of us at one point was like barking at these male strippers. One of the people sitting here today . I dont want to talk about it. We dont want to disclose that. Im not going to talk about it. And it was an aggressive bark. What kind of bark . It just seems so primal. [ barking ] i think i was trying to do a Julia Roberts from pretty woman. [ barking ] yeah, and keep in mind, thunder from down under is a crazy scene anyways, and the barking people were like turning. I mean, it was causing a reaction. I was having fun. I have a memory of doing a show in chicago for four people. At the end of the show, i did some joke and nobody clapped and laughed and just one woman goes, oh, my god. [ laug ] disgust. We had shows cancelled because the rule at the time was if there were more of you on stage than in the audience, were not going to have you perform. Its so awkward, a couple times we didnt do it when someone is like, oh, my coworker carol is out there and she came from the burbs, can we please still do it . For a while, i thought i was going to be a lawyer, and, i was like, instead, im going to do comedy, and in those moments, what happens in my life is everything flashes. I was like, oh, no, i shouldve gotten to law school. I shouldve gotten my masters. Carson that was katie obrien and katie colloton. Our thanks to the katies.
