Now to a sad sign of the times, 14 people overdosed on fentanyl within a four hour period in camden all the people survived and the scare will likely do little to stop addicts from seeking out the drug and it may do the opposite. John rawlins is covering the story in camden for us today. Reporter its a tough one. Authorities will tell you that fentanyl is fueling a rapid increase in the number of fatal overdoses nationwide. You think the rational thing would be to stay away from fentanyl, a powerful chemical but as experts say addiction doesnt support rational thinking. It started at 10 00 yesterday afternoon in the south camden section of the city we experienced 14 overdoses in a span of four hours. A Rapid Response meant no fatality. And Police Arrested alexander valesquez and had 28 more doses for sale. They dont give a location that they used or describe the marks on the fentanyl laced drugs and some will seek them for an apparent higher high. We say to people what are do youing here we put out that this was bad and they tell us that it believes there is a higher level of purity. Fentanyl is less forgiving than heroin and for less is needed for a fatal dose. Its far more potent and people dont understand or believe they will overdose on this particular drug and they take the risk. Fentanyl has legitimate uses but what ended up on the street is likely made in china and mailed to the u. S. They believe its the major driver in the spike of overdoses. The fatal overdoses are up 150 . The numbers in camden in 2016 they had 40 overdoses in total. This year so far 77 and just about every major metropolitan area from chicago to orlando. William spingler once a radnor township commissioner was sentenced in court today for the indecent assault of a former relative through marriage. The punishment for spingler four months after being found guilty of the crime. Chad pradelli was in court today as well. Live outside of the Delaware County courthouse if media with the story. Reporter rick, the judge sentenced spingler to two years probation and 60 days house arrest. He dodged our cameras but inside of court he apologized for the impact on his family and radnor township. The commonwealth wanted the judge to sentence spingler to 3 to 23 months behind bars and it didnt happen. He was convicted of two counts of indecent assault after staff found him assaulting his 103yearold motherinlaw.
