Knocking back a Miller High Life (circa 1903), Leinenkugel's Original (circa 1867) or Point Special Lager (circa 1857) is like drinking Wisconsin history.
Our grandparents, great-grandparents and, possibly, great-great-grandparents quenched their thirst with beers like those lagers. Most certainly the American adjunct lager has been the beer style most often tapped at Wisconsin wedding receptions, paired with fish fries and spilled down backs of fans at Packers' games.
Corn was the most common adjunct — beerspeak for ingredients other than water, malted barley, hops and yeast used in the brewing process — used when brewing these lagers. The slightly sweet smoothness produced by the corn addition is now a key characteristic of this beer style.
