The spectators in Blue River even got to witness one become the second-fastest Australian ever.
The McKenzie International, put on by Portland Track, was the first meet held at the track since the fire burned 173,000 acres and destroyed more than 400 homes last Labor Day weekend. Proceeds from the event and the online livestream will go toward the Oregon Community Foundation's Community Rebuilding Fund to help recovery in the McKenzie River Valley.
Athletes also did not take any prize money for the meet, giving it instead to the rebuilding fund.
The McKenzie Track is special to the Blue River community beyond playing host to big events like this. It was funded and built entirely by the community, with locals including creator Jeff Sherman helping lay the track by hand to finish it in 2010.
