Where do you go looking for donuts in Iowa? According to one national food critic, Hiland Bakery in Des Moines should be your first stop.
Food & Wine Magazine Senior Editor David Landsel recently took readers on a tour of breakfast pastries from southern Beignets to Peach Fritters to donut hot dogs, listing his choice for the best in each state.
Landsel called Hiland Bakery, 3615 6th Ave. in Des Moines, Iowa's best donut maker, with its fritters, long johns, glazed and Champagne doughnuts getting special mention.
"For years, anybody who really knew the lay of the land would tell you that the best doughnuts in town, in Iowa, came from the Hiland Bakery," Landsel wrote.
