There’s been talk under the Golden Dome of Wisdom that Iowa should update its welcome signs greeting travelers at the border. A bill has been filed that would provide $350,000 in funding for a bunch of new signs.
Since news broke of this signage concern, I’ve been contacted by readers wondering when I would address the issue in a column. Do they really think I’d use this sort of low-hanging fruit to kill fish in a barrel? They do, and I clearly would.
Iowans have rarely been universally pleased with efforts to re-brand the state. As a kid I recall the raging debate over then-Gov. Terry Branstad’s plan to put “A State of Minds” on our Iowa license plates. It was supposed to convey our leadership in education. Many people thought it sounded strange and the idea was dropped.
