There’s been talk under the Golden Dome of Wisdom that Iowa should update its welcome signs greeting travelers at the border. A bill has been filed that would provide $350,000 in funding for a bunch of new signs.
Since news broke of this signage concern, I’ve been contacted by readers wondering when I would address the issue in a column. Do they really think I’d use this sort of low-hanging fruit to kill fish in a barrel? They do, and I clearly would.
Iowans have rarely been universally pleased with efforts to re-brand the state. As a kid I recall the raging debate over then-Gov. Terry Branstad’s plan to put “A State of Minds” on our Iowa license plates. It was supposed to convey our leadership in education.
