Flanagan fled the scene even stopping at the roanoke airport to switch cars. He was spotted by a state trooper on interstate 66. As that trooper approached, flanagan shot himself. It was only a minute or two later when the sonic ran off the road into the median. Flanagan was flown from the scene to Inova Fairfax hospitals where he died. Reporter the killer was 41. His victims were 24 and 27 both at the start of their careers and lives. Hay, everyone, im Alison Parker. Reporter parker was 24 and the reporter colleagues called a rock star. She grew up outside roanoke and treasured her family. She talked about them in this recent facebook video. My hobby is whitewater kayaking. Its something that my family does all the time. Reporter she was dating coworker and wdbj anchor chris hurst. The last thing she said to me was good night sweet boy. Reporter adam ward landed his job as a cameraman four years ago. Ward was engaged to the morning news producer, melissa ott who watched the horrifying scene unfold on live tv while she was in the studio control room. I dont want to make him sound like anything other than what he was. A coward. Reporter live back in roanoke now, the expressions of sorrow are pouring in here. The folks inside this building have started collecting them to give to the families of the victims. Adam wards family, his parents were in the building when i was there earlier. At last word Vicki Gardner the woman who was being interviewed when the attack took place is out of surgery and in stable condition. Live in virginia, lou young, cbs 2 news. Okay, lou. Thank you. The station tweeted this message this afternoon we would like to tell you more now about the victims. Alison parker was hired as a reporter there. She did once serve as an intern at wdbj. Parker also enjoyed music. She played the french horn and the trumpet. She also loved theater. Her cameraman, adam ward, had had been working at the station for four years and was also an intern there once. He graduated from Virginia Tech and was an avid hokies football fan. Injured during a shooting, Vicki Gardner also as well, she was being interviewed by parker when the gunman opened fire. Gardner is a spokesman for Smith Mountain lake chamber of commerce. In our news, two jetblue passengers are in custody over a fight on a flight from kingston, jamaica. The violence erupted after the airport. Police say a female passenger used a small blade to slash another woman, who then pulled out pepper spray. Six other passengers were treated for breathing problems. Police have charged 61year old Jean Valentine with assault and possession of a weapon. 52yearold mary cannady is charged with possession of tear gas. New at 6 00, the nypd has created a new task force to patrol times square and thats just the beginning of the citys efforts to stop the spread of aggressive panhandling, costumed characters and other quality of life issues. Heres cbs 2 political reporter marcia kramer. Reporter the costumed characters and bare chested paints women are about to get some company in times square a lot of company. The nypd is establishing a new task force of 100 cops to patrol the bowtie area of times square and focus on quality of life issues. Its just part of mayor de blasios determination to get a handle on a situation his administration calls, quote, nuisance quality of life issues. The mayors goal is to crackdown on in particular aggressive solicitation that often times borders on out right harassment. People harassing people for money. Reporter the nypd is recruiting cops for the new unit even before the mayors Times Square Task force decides whether to dig up the pedestrian mall or what other steps to take. The cops will be assigned to foot patrol from 42nd to 49th streets and from Seventh Avenue to broadway, 24 7. Times square is an important piece of real estate in new york city. And we have to Pay Attention to what is going on there, said nypd chief of Department James oneil. And thats not all. The de Blasio Administration established a group to deal with the spread of the characters to coney island and battery park and other parts of the city now that the heat is on in times square. Well, brooklyns borough president one of the new members of the working group says the crackdown spread to the coney island area and other places because, quote, we cannot abide by unregulated and unforced activity that negatively impacts local Small Businesses and poses a threat to public safety. Nearly 40 street signs around ridgewood have disappeared Police Suspect the culprits are kids going to college. Road signs from back home could be used to adorn the walls of a dorm room. How many phone calls . Many. Reporter mary jane, a residents of Dyker Heights says hornets occupying two nests in the citys tree right outside her front door are dangerous. This particular wasp nest is the wasp nest of a bald faced hornet. Reporter a person from the American Museum of Natural History says about 700 are inside each one. They are high up and so they are probably not going to bother anybody. Reporter however, they do sting and can repeatedly. A scary thought for those who its wrong. Get hurt. And then we think somewhere between the bahamas and, say, florida it would bump up to a category 1 hurricane with 75 mileperhour winds. 75mileperhour winds is a weak category category 1 but its a hurricane nonetheless. A lot of people you have to look at the cone. It could curve to the gulf of mexico or go up the coast or out to sea and never make an impact on the u. S. It says newborns known to be at risk for allergies be given a small amount of food their first birthday.
