Today, terror in new york. With matt lauer in studio 1a in Rockefeller Plaza and savannah guthrie, live in tribeca. Good morning everyone, welcome to this split edition of today on wednesday morning, im matt lauer in studio 1a. Savannah is the the scene of this deadly attack in Lower Manhattan where an otherwise quiet halloween evening was turned into a night of chaos and carnage, savannah. It was, this was a neighborhood that was about to be full of kids trick or tre treating and enjoy the holiday. In a moment, everything changed. We have new information just this morning, matt, and i want to get to the latest on the investigation. As we know, eight people were killed, 11 seriously injured. This makes this the first deadly terror attack in new york city since. Sayfullo saipou, he drove his truck right on to a bike path, going nearly a mile before being shot by police. Hes under close yard in a hospital this morning. He is expected to survive. We have now learned that he entered the u. S. Seven years ago and sources are telling nbc news this morning, he left a note in his rented truck and just breaking, just a few minutes ago, we have learned exactly what was written in that note. Allegedly, saipou wrote, isis lives forever. Federal terror investigation is being elude by the Fbi Joint Terrorism Task force. This morning investigators are questioning the man behind a deadly terror attack in Lower Manhattan. An attack he apparently committed in the name of isis, just blocks from the World Trade Center. We got multiple casualties. This is a mass casualty situation here. 29yearold sayfullo saipou is in custody. Hes responsible for killing eight people and injuring more than a dozen others. This was an act of terror. And a particularly cowardly act of terror. Shortly after 3 00 p. M. , Authorities Say saipou drove a pickup truck rented at a home depot in new jersey along manhattans busy westside highway. He drove nearly a mile from houseton street to chambers street. Mangled. One gentlemans leg was hanging, the other gentleman had tire marks going across his chest. The suspect crashed into a school bus carrying special needs children, two of them were injured. There, he got out of the truck, brandishing a pelt gun and paintball gun. A Police Officer is being credited with taking saipou down, shooting him in the abdomen. Were there kids around . There were a the love kids. I first found out about it from a young, probably five, sixyearold girl yelling he has a gun. Then the mother was very, very scared. I ran to the window and i see a car, i see people dead, i see bicycles on the floor. Witnesses say saipou shouted ala akbar. So far, Police Believe saipou was acting as a lone wolf and not part of a larger terror cell or plot. Saipou, an immigrant from yoouz beck stan moved to the u. S. In 2010 and held a green card and florida drivers license. A friend, telling nbc news, saipou has been living in new jersey working as an uber driver. Uber says its cooperating with the fbis investigation. After the attack, President Trump tweeted, the suspect is a very sick and deranged person. Hours later, he tweeted again, i have just ordered Homeland Security to step up our already extreme vetting program. Being politically correct is fine, but not for this. Governor andrew cuomo focussed on new yorkers resilience. Weve lived with this before. We felt the pain before. We feel the pain today. But we go Forward Together and we go forward, stronger than ever. Overnight the spire of one World Train Center lit up in red, white, and blue, in honor of the victims. And with us now are two people who witnessed the attack and its aftermath, we have gene and anthony whos asked us not to use his last name, and good morning to both of you. Im glad to be with you. We met yesterday. You work here. Your son goes to school here. This is our neighborhood. Anthony, tell me what you saw. I was waiting for my son to pick him up from school. And i was in my car in the passengers side, the back door, and i heard a big smash so then i looked up and i saw the bus after it hit the pickup truck hit the bus, its coming right at my car. But then the driver swerved uphill. On chambers street and then i looked back down to the pickup truck to see if the guy was okay and you thought it was an accident. I thought it was an accident. He had his hands up in the air and i saw guns in his hands, waving them, and coming towards me, but then went around the truck and then went towards westside highway. At that point, i literally just went and started grabbing kids and saying get back in the school, get back in the school. Theres a shooter, theres a shooter. And i was just pushing kids back in the school. Looking for my son to make sure hes not out. I didnt see him and i pushed the kids back in and i ran up to get the police that were at stiverson to push them down in the right direction. Police asked you to identify the shooter later. Can you tell me about that . Yes, i was escorted down to the ambulance, the perpetrator was in the ambulance and i just said yep, that was him. He had a red stripe on his shirt and he was all bloody and he was in the ambulance. Gene, you and i met yesterday on this very corner. You work near here, you were walking home. Can you tell me what you saw. When i got out of the work, i was crossing the street. For some reason behind me i heard screaming, loud screaming, so it was a different kind of scream, so i went back, there was a female yelling really loud. I went back and i looked, i seen the white pickup truck in the bike path. And all of the sudden, i knew something was wrong. When i got closer to the lady is when i seen that there were people on bikes that were run over. And, you know, they were not with us no more. They passed away. And thats what she saw. And she was hysterical, crying, screaming, she was on the phone with somebody. And it was all the cops came running. They dont even know whats going on. They were just as confused as i was. I didnt expect to see Something Like this. You know, i just came out of work, im trying to get home and seeing this is its crazy. And when you saw that you saw two individuals i saw two individuals you knew in your heart. I knew they werent with us no more. You could just tell the shape they were in. Their body wasnt like if somebody gets hit bay car going 20 Miles Per Hour theyre okay, theyre moving. These guys, they had no movement, nothing. How fast do you think the car was going . About 50 Miles Per Hour. I didnt know where he got on until later on when i sat down after all of this happened and i found out he got on the path at houseton street, thats a long ways. I just came out of work here at 26. And i dont know if he missed me or i missed him, but, you know, somebody was looking out for me because that could have easily been me. Anthony, i know its so emotional. Listen, theres a school right there. Youre going to pick up your son. How, how are you processing this this morning . How is your little boy doing . He went trick or treating last night, he was like okay, normal day, went trick or treating, it was fine, did his homework. And it was back to school today. Like a normal day. You know, and now they have to put more barricades up on these bike paths so no cars can be on that. You know. To prevent this all. Well, it was quite a day. And i thank you both for being here early this morning and sharing your story. Youre welcome. Back to you, matt. Savannah, thank you so much. Jonathan is the deanst is the chief investigator here in new york. Good to see you. Why are officials so convinced so early that this guy acted alone . The best information is because theyve spoke within him in the hospital. He is boasting, apparently, from his bedside about his activities. Everything that they have detected so far on his social media, they have found that he has gone online and visited isisrelated websites. So every indication so far is that he has acted alone. Of course theyre going to run down Everything Else to make sure that he had no financial help, no supporters, this isnt part of a larger cell, but less than a day into this, they are reasonably confident that he is a lone wolf and over the last overnight hours, theyre increasingly confident that hes a lone actor. When you say hes boasting, they did speak in the hospital, apparently he is proud what have he did on that bike path. You talk about talking about his friends, his family, they are talking to his wife right now. Have they learned anything from her yet . I dont know what. I know that she has been met by fbi and Police Officials in paterson, new jersey, i dont know if she had any knowledge of his plan or how long this plan was in the works. Remember, lone actor, came to this country seven years ago, traveled from ohio to florida, been in paterson only since january it appears. Hasnt been here very long. Working as an uber driver. They know he drove over the george wav bridge at about 2 00 after he rented that truck. Drove down on the highway. And carried out the attack just an hour later. And they know he had been in that area many times in the past. Are they suspecting that is because of his work as an uber driver or perhaps that he was casing this location . Its very much part of the investigation. They want to know, did he do test runs. Theyre concerned he did test runs, how did he know how to hit is that site . But, again, because he worked as an uber driver, they also know its possible he went down the west side highway to that area many times in the past as well. What they do know, he knew that area. Doesnt seem he had any kind of escape plan, pelt gun, paintball gun, knife in the truck, left the note behind. Was this a Suicide Mission that didnt end the way he thought it was going to end . I would believe thats probably a very good summary of exact lay what was going to take place. He was going there to kill and possibly be killed. Wnbc, jonathan, thank you very much. Savannah. Guys, back to this mornings top story, of course this investigation into the deadly truck rampage, god i did schwartz is at bell view hospital where the suspect and many injured are being treated this morning, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, yeah, sayfullo saipou is in this hospital. He is under close guard. He is not saying. He is reportedly proud of what hes done. This morning, authorities are putting together a detailed profile of the accused terrorist sayfullo saipou, the 29yearold is married with two children. Hes from uzbek stan, came in 2010 and has a green card. Right after the deadly attack, he jumped from the truck shouting allahu akbar. They found a note inside the truck claiming he acted for isis. Neighbors telling police, saipou is very religious, living with his family in his paterson, new jersey, apartment. But he has a florida drivers license which lists an apartment complex. A woman moved in several months ago, but doesnt know saipou and never seen him. Saipou was a truck driver with commercial driving licenses in georgia and florida. Hes been an uber driver. Uber says he passed the background check with no problem adding that the company is cooperating with authorities. It leads officials to suspect saipou may be a lone wolf, a single individual inspired bier terrorist organizations, but not directly working for one. The new terrorist tactic are these lone wolves who commit an act of terror. Reporter last year, three attacks were carried out by lone wolves in the u. S. According to authorities. Omar mateen, a lone wolf who pledged allegiance to isis attacked the pulse nightclub in orlando killing 49 people and injured 53. Bombing in the chelsea neighborhood of new york injuring 31 people. Akbar roux many was it lone wolf. And Ohio State University wounded 11 people, police say lone wolf attacker was a somali refugee inspired by terrorist propaganda. Investigators are now piecing together a timeline of what happened. They say that yesterday around 2 00, he drove a minivan to a home depot in new jersey. There he rented a truck, drove that truck over the George Washington bridge into manhattan before the attack. Savannah, back to you. All right, thank you very much. And im joined now by nbc news National Security analyst michael lighter, good morning, good to see you. Good morning. Here we are, were standing in the shadow of the World Trade Center whereby im looking right at the building, what strikes you about this . It is the bookends that weve seen. The World Trade Center, 16yearold, big cop plex attacks planned overseas, executed with 19 hijackers and today what we see in this threat, small scale, one individual renting a truck, still terrorizing the community. Thats how the threat has morphed from 9 11 to today. Were learning more about the suspect. He is reportedly from use beck stan. That didnt surprise you, this is a region thats been a problem for a while. Central asia have produced a significant amount of radicalized individuals. As i mentioned to you, there are more people in syria than any other region in the world for foreigners. So this is an area where theyve been very, were repressive governments, very strong strain of islam which is intended to be extreme. Not exactly the same as we what saw in the tsarnaevs, but similar. And the propaganda, if youre reading this kind of jihadist literature as we understand this suspect may have been, is it saying go get in the car. Get in a truck, do this kind of attack . Absolutely. This is what al qaeda started to say but its what isis picked up three or four years ago. Dont worry about guns or planes, go get a truck, run people over. Its worked in france, barcelona, in the uk, and now here in the united states. Its just very difficult for officials to defend against. Its hard to defend against. And also hard to detect. If youre talking about a lone wolf who by all appearances seems normal, but is harboring these kinds of plans in their heart, i mean, how do you, how do you even find that . Its very difficult. We have generally looked for the networks because with networks theres communication and you can tech those communications. Now when youre looking at individuals sitting at home looking at their computer, you can monitor those websites, understand why it might radicalize them, but it relies on a partnership between police and Law Enforcement and government and communities, the muslim communities to identify these people. No ones better at that than new york city and then it can still happen and highlights how hard it is for us all over the world. Always good to get your experti expertise. Appreciate it. For the moment, matt and hoda, back to you guys. All right. We appreciate that, savannah, thank you very much. Mr. Roker is here, what do you have . Snow to talk about. Winterlike perhaps. Especially in the Northern Rockies and the western plains. Montana all the way just to south of minneapolis and west minneapolis along a warm front. Itll be a quick round of snow. Make for difficult track with blowing and drifting, but were not looking for huge accumulations. In fact been around the minnesota area, were talking about maybe an inch to two inches into northern wisconsin, but the maef amounts are going to be around mizzou la down to yellow stone out to gillette and one to two feet. Skier action starting to get. Good wednesday morning to you. Im first alert meteorologist steve sosna. More clouds in the sky on this wednesday. It will not be perfectly sunny. We know that this action was intended to break our spirit. Investigators say saipou rented the pickup truck from a home depot in pennsylvania sake, new jersey, he drove across the George Washington bridge into manhattan, leaving his own minivan at store. Multiple people on the ground from chambers to houseton. Reporter it began tuesday afternoon when saipou veered the truck on to a bike path on the busy westside highway. Police say he drove south from houseton to chambers street. Plowing into cyclists and pedestrians before slamming into a school bus for special needs children. One gentlemans leg was hanging by skin. The other gentleman had tire marks going across his chest. You could tell he was going fwast and they didnt know what hit them. Reporter saipou hopped out of the truck and shouted ala akbar. A quickthinking Police Officer brought an end to the violence, shooting saipou in the abdomen. The guy was running around. He was goating chased, and then all of the sudden, four shots went off. Reporter saipou, immigrant moved to the u. S. In 2010 and holds a green card along with a florida drivers license. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says saipou seemed to have carried out the attack as a lone wolf. At this point, theres no evidence to suggest a wider plot or a wider scheme. Reporter and despite the attack, with ramped up security, new york citys annual halloween parade marching on, just blocks from where the truck crashed. A sign of the citys strength and resilience in the face of terror. Kristian wagner was walking when that attack unfolded. Were neighbors, tell me what you saw and heard yesterday. I was just whacking on the street at 3 00 in the afternoon, the school left on. I was walking amongst the kids and working my way towards the bike path. And i know ive only lived there a short time, youve got to live to the bike path. As i approach, i heard this crashing noise and i looked to my left, and i saw a truck coming directly at me. Hitting all kinds of things on the way and just seemingly out of control. It was going really fast. And was being chased by aunds cover car. So i thought it was just a car chase, like from los angeles, were used from car chases over there. As i looked for it, i moved out of the way, started running to one side. A bus came along, which kind of stopped the car. So then the bus rolled on through and stopped the car, and i saw the damage to the car, kind of flipped up and landed back on its feet. And i stopped at that point to look at it and take a picture just in case somebody needed, you know, a note of it. And i saw the driver was out of the car, the truck, it was a flat bed truck. At that time, so i took the picture, i loadered my camera and i saw guns in each one of his hands. And he started raising his hands up, so i turned around and i said guns and all the kids were there. Actually the kids reacted also, fairly quickly. You were surrounded school just let out. School just let out. Must have been 50, 60 kids right there. And parents. But the kids reacted really quick. The parents kind of froze and they just looked at the scene. And i saw him raising the guns, i was like, run, get out of here, get around the corner. And so, people started running and i looked one more time and and i looked at the guns, and i thought those are oddlooking guns. Ive seen a lot of guns in my life and never seen anything like that. Now we know a paint ball and bb gun, but they looked like real guns to you. Looked like it and the way he was behaving i thought he was going tosh did. What was his dehaifr . He stood very quietly and started raising his hands, he was waiting for somebody to take him out i guess because he knew he was going to shoot those guns. I didnt know that. Nobody, you know, around me knew that. Did you hear him say anything . Couldnt. Everybody around me started screaming, so i couldnt really hear him say anything and people started running, thank god, and i assumed they were guns he was really going to fire. I within the around the corner, went a little bit further, and then i heard the shots and i thought, wait a minute, those are single shots. So obviously he doesnt have any kind of machine gun or, you know, whatever. So i thought, sounds like a police shot him. Which is i think exactly what happened. That is what happened. Yeah. Kristian, ha a horrifying sight. Thank goodness you were there to help with the kids and youre just new here and new to the neighborhood. Just new here, but ill tell you, the kids were really smart about this. You know, i think thats going to be a future, these kids are going to grow up with this kind of stuff. Sad, sad reality. Sad reality. Thank you for being here and sharing your story. Appreciate it. Be well. And for now, hoda and matt back to you guys. Okay. Thank you very much, savannah. We are looking at new advances in the fight against that disease. Maria shriver is here with more on that, maria, good morning, welcome back. Thank you so much. Were kicking off with a month of alzheimers as matt said with a look at women and alzheimers. Believe it or not, women are twice as likely, two ut of every three brains diagnosed with alzheimers belong to women and no one knows why that is. Now an Innovative New study hopes to get some answers and help develop effective treatments for this devastating disease. Reporter in a disease riddled with unknowns, its one of alzheimers biggest mysteries. Why do women make up twothirds of cases . To be frank, we dont exactly know. What i believe is that there is multiple reasons. Reporter a neurologist dr. Richard isaacson is determined to find that. He runs the first alzheimers prevention clinic. Treating younger people at risk for the disease decades before symptoms occur. So most people think they should worry about alzheimers when theyre in their 70s or 80s. Big misconception. Its a younger persons disease. It starts in the brain 20 to 30 years before the symptom of memory loss. And thats shocking to some people. When it comes to women, there are biological changes, metabolism changes in the brain that happen decades before. Reporter this month, hes launching a new, potentially revolutionary study. Monitoring 75 women, ages 40 to 65 who are at risk for alzheimers. Trying to pinpoint those early changes in their bodies that may lead to the disease. For example, the menopause transition, could that be a trigger . Reporter so much controversy for women around being premenopause sal, then they wonder, should i take hormones . Is that good for my brain or bad for my body if i take who monos im going to get cancer, but maybe im protecting my brain. Theres not a one size fits all approach here. Certain women may benefit, other women may not benefit, and these are the things we need to figure out much better. Reporter alyssa joined the study after losing her grandmother to alzheimers. As a result of that experience, losing her, i decided that i needed to do whatever i could to help change the outcome for future generations of my family and others. Reporter over the four year study, subjects will undergo regular blood screens, brain scans, and cognitive tests to track changes that competitor lat from the early signs of alzheimers. Dr. Iowa sackson says there are steps you could take right now that may help delay symptoms, like daily rigorous exercise, eating a mediterranean diet, reducing stress, and getting plenty of sleep. Give me a 30 second spiel to a woman out there whos 40, got kids, whos got a job. Explain to her how shes going to get the time and why. Got make the time. This is your brain. One out of three cases of alzheimers may be preventable if the person does everything right. The other two out of three cases, were not there yet. If question delay by six months of year and two years, and that block buster drug comes. That persons lifestyle and other choices prevented their own alzheimers disease. Dr. Isaacson helps to enroll at least 300 women in the alzheimers study, but he does need more private funding to do that. And we have more information, including those Lifestyle Changes that may help delay symptoms at today. Com. Were not saying prevent alzheimers, but delay symptoms. There is one who could not join us, snow boarding legend sean white as mike just talked about, he had a bad crash recently, but sean did send us a bit of a message, take a look. Good morning, today show, sean white here saying hi from los angeles. Im really sad and bummed that i couldnt be here today for 1900 days out. I dont know if you can tell with my face, but most recently i took a bad crash while i was training in new zealand, i was working on a new trick and as i reentered the half pipe, the clipped the top. I flew about 22 feet and hit my face at the bottom and, you know, 62 stitches and bad bruising in my lungs. Maybe my modelling days may be over. But, i will definitely be there 2018 in pyeongchang for the olympics. And i want to say hi to team usa, all the girls and guys out there. Best of luck. And ill see you soon. Thanks, guys. All right, sean, thank you. Hope you feel better. Lindsey von is here. She is the most successful female its been almost eight years since we saw her win that olympic gold. That was in vancouver and after missing sochi due to an injury, shes hoping to be back on the podium in south korea. Lindsey, nice to see you. How are you feeling . I feel good. You know, im healthy, great prep period. First time in a long time that ive actually been able to ski quite a bit in the summer which is nice. Are you healthy or lindsey von healthy which means youre going to ski with a bunch of aches and pains no matter what . I mean, thats kind of life, you know, that the point, ive had so many surgeries, but i feel good. Honestly i feel great and i feel strong. So thats the most important thing. Just staying healthy and staying like this until sochi not sochi south korea. You talk about the surgeries youve had, youre a little bit older, does it change the way you ski . It doesnt change the way i ski, it definitely changes the way i have to work out and train and i have to do so much extra work to make sure my body is functioning. You can stand up out of bed every morning. I know, but owe knob west its good. Its all part of the game. And im like i said, i feel good right now, im just going to keep working hard. In your opinion austria last weekend, it was . Yep, saturday. You were skiing giants for the first time in like 600 days. What was it like . I felt a little rusty. I kind of knew what i was doing, but i also didnt. I felt just label the out of place and a little bit rusty. So i think it was a good starting position for me you know, get one started before lake louise, kind of get the kinks out and then build my way up before the olympics. I want to talk about lake louise in a second. What drives you these days . Is it gold medals . Is it records . Is it just wanting to go faster or just not wanting to stop. Combination of all of those things. I mean, i love what i do. Hands down why ive always come back from injuries, but at the end of the day, i also want to win. I love winning. Winning is good. And lake louise, is it true you want to ski the mens downhill . Yeah, i do. Why . Men are the pinnacle of sport, and ive accomplished a lot in my career, but thats one thing that i want to push myself to try to achieve. All right. Well look forward to that. So hopefully that happens again and i just might show up with green hair, who knows. You know what i love about you . Your parents are with you all the way. Your dad quit his job as an engineer to go with you and train. How do you think youll feel if youre standing on the podium with your dad nearby . Honestly never seen my dad cry before, so i feel like thatll be a first. I dont know. I dont want him to cry, but if he does, bill bawling my eyes out on the podium as well. But yeah, i mean, you know, hes sacrificed so much for me. I feel like thats the least i could do for him. Off wonderful family, your grandmother is going to be there too.
