It just came out that secretary of state Rex Tillerson called President Trump a moron and threatened to quit. [ cheers and applause ] you can tell the situations a a mess because trump started throwing paper towels at it. [ laughter ] and thats when you know, thats just bad. Get this. It turns out mike pence gave Rex Tillerson a pep talk to get him to stay on as secretary of state. Because nothing screams pep like a talk from mike pence. [ laughter ] im even less excited. But after it came out that tillerson called trump a moron, tillerson held a press conference and called the president smart. [ light laughter ] then he said, do you think the moron bought it . [ laughter ] you cant he can still hear you. [ applause ] but listen to this. It turns out that trumps soninlaw and adviser Jared Kushner had a third private email account that he used for government business. And if you all listen closely, you can hear hillary backstage laughing. [ laughter ] you just to listen to that. [ applause ] check this out, instagram just added a new feature that lets users poll their followers when theyre trying to make a a decision. For example, this woman said, which one, plain or sprinkles. Sprinkles is what i would probably say, yeah. I dont know. Its already very popular. Turns outs a bunch of politicians have been using it. Steve really . Jimmy ill show you what i mean. Yeah, for instance, education secretary betsy devos wrote, which one, a pear or a banana . Thank you for can we do that again . Jimmy i know, right . It feels good. Its so energizing. [ cheers and applause ] jimmy no, no, no joking, joking. Joking, joking. Thank you for being here. We have two books to talk about. It takes a village, and then also what happened. I noticed what happened. Lets start with this one. Theres no question mark. There is no question mark. Right. Jimmy so its not, like, what happened . Yeah, and theres no exclamation point either. Jimmy thats true, yeah. So its up to the reader to really say, but this is your recollection of what happened. Thats exactly right, jimmy. You know, its my best effort to kind of pull the curtain back, invite people in to see what happened from my perspective, and to talk about, you know, the thingmm at i didnt get right, and the other stuff that was going on at the same time. Jimmy yeah, absolutely. Its not a book just saying, like, oh, this went wrong. Its about what could go wrong, also i think thats a really important point about the book. Some things will never happen again, but unfortunately, other stuff is still happening, and could keep happening, like the russian interference, for example. Like voter suppression, trying to keep young people, and africanamericans, and others from voting. So, i want people to read it, and to know its a kind of a a very personal look, and its a story of resilience on the part of what i went through, but also other people have told me ive been doing all these book signings, and ive talked to thousands of people that, you know, it was important to them personally, and then to take lessons so that we can protect our country. Jimmy can we go to talk about election night. Oh. Jimmy sorry. [ laughter ] i have to. I have to bring i mean, yeah. Yeah. Jimmy again no spoilers, but the end you wont even believe the end of this book. Yeah. Jimmy you really yeah, im still scratching my head. Jimmy youre there election night, and you just have to be, just, in a bad place. I mean just got to be. Well, i it didnt start out that way. Jimmy did you know, did you have any intel at all . No. No. I mean, thats one of the big mysteries about this election is that the information that i had was not just from my campaign, but from so many different sources. Obviously, different campaigns, and candidates, and the press, and others, and so when the first returns started coming in, and we heard that it wasnt going well for us in florida, and north carolina, you know, it was worrying, but not definitive because there are a a number of different ways to get to the votes you need in the electoral college, but then by, you know, the end of the night, by midnight, and we saw what was happening in pennsylvania, michigan, and so, it was a really tough night. Jimmy do you think, like, if you were up against a a different republican, would you have felt different . I would have. I would have. Yeah, i thought about that a a lot. You know, look, if i had lost to another republican, somebody who i disagreed with, but who i thought was temperamentally capable of being president , who would take the job, and the awesome responsibility seriously, of course id be disappointed, but i wouldnt be so worried about my country, and the world as i am now when i see whats going on every single day. Jimmy and every single day, it really is a new thing where you go, i cant believe this is happening now. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Jimmy are you kind of, you know, going, i would i would do this differently. Well, you cant help, but think about that, and you know recently, with the hurricanes, and particularly the damage in the Virgin Islands and in puerto rico, you know, i was right in the middle of our government responding to the horrible effects of the earthquakes in haiti, so i knew what were capable of doing, and you know, i waited because i thought they dont need me saying, hey, send naval assets, i tweeted at the president , and the secretary of defense, and the defense department, and i basically, you know, implored them to send naval assets, including the hospital ship, and it took a few more days, and then finally they did. I mean, theres just its hard to figure out, you know, what are the priorities if 3. 5 million americans, and Puerto Ricans are americans, lets make sure people remember that. [ cheers and applause ] jimmy absolutely. You know, if they arent if they arent the highest priority of your government in responding to such a terrible natural disaster, what are you what are you people spending your time doing, right . Golfing, tweeting, watching cable tv . I mean, find some time to tell the navy to get down there, and rescue people, and provide food, and provisions, and medical care. [ cheers and applause ] jimmy and the only way to get his attention is to tweet at him . Well, i suppose i could go on some of the tv shows he watches. Jimmy yeah. [ laughter ] but, you know, look, i think tweeting helps. You know, he tweeted against my book. Jimmy i saw that. He tweeted against your book. Yeah, the what happened book. Jimmy yeah. And you said . Yeah. Well, hi, ive got another book, a Childrens Book. Maybe youll read that one. [ cheers and applause ] also, its a story of cooperation, and community building, and you know, helping our kids really value diversity, and Work Together. I think thats a pretty Good American message. Jimmy yeah. It could actually help. [ cheers and applause ] im happy to see you smiling because i got to tell you that i just think youve dedicated your whole life to this country, and i want to thank you for doing that, and i just for just everything youve done. I mean, youre in the history books forever. Well, look, its been a a privilege for me to make a a small contribution, and you know, personally as i write in the book, i mean, look guys, i took a lot of walks in the woods. I spent a lot of time cleaning closets, and playing with my dogs. I drank my share of chardonnay. [ light laughter ] jimmy yeah. I mean, i did what i thought would help in kind of overcoming the personal disappointment, but thats why i say it is a book about resilience. Everybody has disappointments, and losses. You know . Jimmy sure, absolutely. And you may not lose a a president ial election, but you know you may lose somebody close to you. You may lose a job you want. Theres all kinds of challenges in life, and so i want not only individuals, and so many of them as theyre are coming to my events are telling me that it has helped them, but i want our country to understand how resilient we are. You know, we are such an extraordinary collection of people, and energy, and all sorts of great potential, and i dont want people to get depressed, and worn out, and tired because they see things they disagree with that are contrary to who we are, you know, theres something for everybody to do. It may it may just be in your own family, or community, or school, or business, or whatever, but theres something for everybody to contribute. Jimmy did you see saturday night live at all . Kate mckinnon. Oh, my gosh. Yeah. That was a that was a tear jerker. Jimmy it was. Did you yeah. I mean, i write about it in the book because, you know, i didnt have any idea what to expect, and when kate mckinnon, who is actually a better me than i am, to be honest, really. [ laughter ] [ applause ] you know . Jimmy im sure shed appreciate that. I dont know about i wish i had her talent. Shes just an amazing person, and she sat there playing hallelujah. That was hard. That was really hard, and then, you know, the other skit that she did, you know, showing some of my warnings, like be careful what he will do, he will kill us all, and all of that, you know, that that was not as funny, but it it was also very touching. Jimmy and what do you think of alecs trump . I think its amazing. Yeah. Jimmy yeah. Yeah. You know, and he keeps saying hes not going to keep doing it, but im glad he is, because, i mean hes got the expression, and the body language. [ applause ] all of those things. Perfect. You know, this book tour is of course something that i am really glad to be doing, but i find my interactions with literally now the thousands of people that ive shaken hands with, ive signed a book for, ive spoken at an event, to be so, you know, reinforcing, and i am going to keep speaking out. Ive got the freedom to do that. Im not running for anything. I can talk about what is at stake in these [ applause ] different decisions that are being made. You know, i write about, you know, taking on the nra in the election. [ applause ] and i and i write about these remarkable, Extraordinary People who lost loved ones, the mothers of the movement who lost children, the parents from sandy hook whose 6yearolds were murdered, the incredible Gabby Giffords and her husband, mark, because i cant believe that one whole Political Party in the greatest country on earth is totally sold to the gun lobby, and will do whatever they are ordered to do, despite the loss of life. I mean, one of the first things that, you know, trump signed as president was to reverse president obamas order that people with, you know, Serious Mental Health problems should not be able to buy guns, and so he signed it, and arent you happy that people we already know who have Mental Health problems can now buy guns. I mean, this makes no sense, and the vast majority of americans, and the vast majority of gun owners know we need common sense gun safety measures, so im going to keep fighting for it. I i always bring this up to you, cause last i talked to you probably, well, got to be four years ago when i had my first baby. I said, any advice . And you said, read. Yeah. Jimmy read, read, read, even before they know how to read or even just whatever you have the baby, read to them and teach them books and i i did. And i i read to them all the time. Teach them books. I read read them books. But i read well. [ laughter ] i read good. And i did do that, and now they absolutely love books. Yeah. Im so glad you brought that up, because i remember that conversation, you were so sweet about becoming a dad, and look, you build their vocabulary. You literally build brain cells by talking, reading, and singing, you can, you know, obviously build that vocabulary by all three of those, and reading builds that experience. Its a real bonding experience with your babies. Jimmy love it. I do it every yeah, i know. Jimmy its a great book. And the illustrations. This extraordinary illustrator. Jimmy who is it . Marla frazee. Honestly she has made the book and a little kid came up to me. I was in brooklyn doing a book signing and he came up and he said, i read the book. He was, like, 6, right . I said, oh, so, what did you think . He said, i liked it. I said, what did you like best . He goes, i like that they built a playground. And i said, well, you know, isnt that a good thing that people Work Together . Yes. And it looks like a good playground. [ laughter ] jimmy the best was the playground. He was so adorable. The playground. Yeah. Jimmy its those Little Things that keep them come back and wanting to read more and they find Different Things and so many things to point and look at. I know. Jimmy and obviously, it worked out for you because your daughter, chelsea, is a a fantastic person, i got to say you got to be [ cheers and applause ] oh, thank you. Jimmy shes been on the show. You must be proud of chelsea. Oh, i mean, beyond words. I always have been, but i have to say, the greatest pleasure is watching her be a mom, and you know, watching her take care of her son and daughter and read to them and play with them, and its it just lights me up. I mean, its one of the one of the best parts of my life right now is that i get to spend all this time with them which i really, you know, treasure, so.
