A viewer says schemers are using a new approach to con you out of your personal information. Harry hairston explains this approach targets your cell phone in a way to confuse you and dupe you into taking a fraudulent call. Like most of us joe uses his cell phone all the time. To avoid robo calls, he wont answer numbers he doesnt recognize. But a recent call got his attention. So he saved the caller id to show us. You can see it appears as though i called myself. His number was spoofed to make it appear as though he called his cell phone from his cell phone. So he answered it. There was a recorded message. It said your account has been flagged for a fraud alert. This is at t. The recording asked him for had last four dickgits of his Social Security number. I called their Service Number to see if there was an account. At t told him there was no problem and the call was fraudulent. We contacted at t and says its fighting the problem with a free service wireneless customers ca sign up for. At t launched the service last december and says its blocked more than three million blocked calls. Joe doesnt have the service, but did the next best thing, he hung up. He did the smart thing. Gave them nothing. Gave them nothing. At t also points out it does not ask for personal information via email or text. And folks, check with your wireless carrier to see if it offers a similar program. Also, if youre not sure whos calling dont answer and never give out personal information to anyone youre not sure of. Always got to stay one step ahead. Yes you do. Nbc 10 news at 6 00 is next.
