Congressman chaka fattah accepted an award in washington today one day after the fedz handed down an inindictment in an alleged racketeering scheme. His wife renee chenaultfattah is mentioned in the indictment and today is responding to the allegations. The award the congressman accepted today was from the u. S. Black chamber. He was honored as advocate of the year. Congressman fattah said yesterday he is confident he will be cleared of the charges. A 29 count indictment was returned against fattah and four others yesterday. It accuses the 11term democrat of misusing hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal charitable and campaign funds. Chaka fattah has not been arrested and no court date has been set. Nbc 10 news anchor renee chenaultfattah is telling her side of the story in a letter forwarded to nbc 10. Renee was referenced in the criminal complaint against her husband. She is labeled as person e and an affiliate of the fattah enterprise in the federal indictment. The feds allege she took part in the scheme to fraudulently sell her car in order to pay Closing Costs on a vacation home. Nbc 10s Deanna Durante is joining us live with more on renees side of the story. Reporter in the letter, renee chenaultfattah says she has done nothing wrong. The wife of congressman chaka fattah says the car sale was legitimate and she knows this case isnt going away any time soon. The feds say the fattahs used money from a fake car sale to help secure a mortgage on this poconos vacation home. Chenaultfattah describes the vehicle, a porsche, in a letter forwarded to nbc 10 as her second car. She says she sold it to a family friend but for several reasons, the car remained at the fattahs home. The feds say the friend is herbert, a lobbyist and former finance director during fattahs 2007 campaign run for mayor. They say the sale was a bribe to fattah in order to get his girlfriend a job and him considered for a federal appointment. The authorities claim chenaultfattah continued to register and insure the car, have it serviced and kept in her property more than 20 months after the sale occurred. Chenaultfattah denies the sale was illegal and explains why the car remained in her home. She says the car stayed at our house, we have three garages and the friend lived in an apartment. For a time i continued with insuring it since it was in our garage and wanted nothing to happen to it. And i had it towed to be serviced in the spring because i wanted it to be in good shape for the friend. It has remained undriven in our garage for three years now because on advice of counsel we were instructed to do nothing with the car. In her letter, chenaultfattah says the proceeds from the car sale were used in connection with the purchase of the poconos home. She says the sale of the car was triggered by a change in the law and was required by her mortgage company. Chenaultfattah has not been charged with a crime. Congressman fattah denies all charges. Deanna durante, nbc 10 news. Renee is currently on leave from the station. Count on nbc 10 for complete coverage as this investigation unfolds. Fortunately it keeps moving so the heavy rain doesnt stay in one spot hour after hour. We will go back six hours, you can see this line coming through berks county really strong, then actually weakening a little bit just in the last hour or so. Its still pretty strong but not quite as fierce as it was. Not as much lightning. Its gone from Hamilton Township in new jersey all the way in just past northeast philly now and going into new jersey. West deptford township, theres still rain in the philadelphia area and points to north and west but not the heavy stuff now. Now we are into northern delaware, just south of i95. Not quite down to middletown yet. Some of that rain is on the heavy side. We have some flood advisories until 6 15 for parts of berks county, Lehigh Valley, until 7 45 for northern delaware, all the way through philadelphia area and up to trenton. Just some localized flooding from some of that heavy rain that has fallen. The radar estimates showing in the yellow generally just over two inches so some of that near the reading area, about 2 1 2 inches of rain in a fairly short period of time. Thats why weve got the flood threat. You can see the line of showers and storms as more lightning approaches Burlington County now than just about anywhere else. The timing takes it to glassboro in just a couple minutes. At least the heaviest of it. 4 55 in vineland, 5 42 in Egg Harbor Township which would take it toward Atlantic City close to 6 00. But maybe just a little bit before 6 00. The thing is moving fairly quickly and that is in a way a good thing, because its really heavy rain. If it stayed over one spot you would be getting multiple inches of rain, not just one or two inches. Heres the future cast as we go through the afternoon. You can see it handling this line and keeping it pretty heavy as it heads toward the jersey shore and there it is. 6 00, 7 00 toward the Atlantic City area and then moving offshore. It was 98 an hour ago and it did reach 100 in dover and millville just about an hour ago as well. So we are getting a break due to the rain but its not going to be something that is going to last. We are going to be seeing these temperatures going up over the next couple days. At the shore, we have some really comfortable conditions coming over the weekend. Lower humidity as well. It is just going to be delightful out there. In the poconos, its going to be a great weekend as well with temperatures into the low 80s. A majority of the heaviest rain is moving out of the philadelphia area, moving out of trenton but now its really across 295 moving into Burlington County. Radar has tried to indicate some spots seeing a lot of lightning and potentially some small hail here, but right over 295 moving into bordentown township, heavy rain, lightning and potential for small hail. Also pretty high winds, near 30 to 40 miles an hour. Around camden, the heavy rain is starting to leave but its moving into gloucester, west deptford seeing heavier rain. Evesham township seeing heavy rain approaching. Also washington township. This whole line is moving mostly to the northeast so it could be near williamstown by 4 41, toms river by 5 14. Aside from this, the heat and humidity today, chief meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz is standing by with a closer look at that. He we did get up to 90 degrees today, making it an official heat wave. Of course, that rain and the thunderstorms, that has really busted the temperature. But only temporarily. Be sure to download the free nbc 10 news app for the latest developments ahead of the papal visit. Nbc10. Com has an entire section dedicated to how the region is preparing for pope francis visit. It was a first alert day for the heat and humidity. We got rid of both of those. We still have the storms coming and that line of storms has gone through much of the region and just about everybody is getting rain today. Some of that on the heavy side. But its past trenton and philadelphia, past i95. Its actually starting to get past 295 and the jersey turnpike as it goes through Burlington County and parts of ocean county right now. You can see south of chester, well south of chester, also well south of wilmington going into parts of salem and gloucester counties in new jersey and now getting into kent county in delaware right over smyrna getting heavy rain right now. We still have a flood advisory in effect for much of the i95 area until 7 45. But its just some isolated areas getting the flooding from that line of storms. Fortunately, that line continues to move and that is really helping. This is the radar estimated rainfall. We still havent gotten it in much of new jersey but northern delaware and all of pennsylvania, you can see the maps totally covered. That means everybodys had at least some. About 2 1 2 in parts of the reading area which caused a little bit of flooding. About 1 1 2 near the Philadelphia International airport and 1. 7 up near the trenton area. Most of that fell in less than an hour. 1 1 2 inches in parts of central New Castle County and 1. 9 just north of dover. So that line continues and its just about to go through dover, just about to come through the rest of Burlington County and head right down the Atlantic City expressway toward the shore. And the timing of it takes it to dover in just a few minutes, Egg Harbor Township at 5 38, cape may and wildwood right around 6 10. That will be around the same time it would hit lewes, delaware as well. The future cast showing heavy thunderstorms continuing to move out. Nothing more than a couple lingering showers behind it. So we are going to be in good shape as we head through the rest of the evening. We are going to be in great shape at the shore. Tomorrow, we have a land breeze for much of the day. It will be much less humid but the temperature will be up there at 84. On saturday and sunday the sea breeze comes in so even though it will be hot inland, right at the beaches, only near 80 degrees. It looks dry both days. Looks like another great shore weekend. Overall, another great poconos weekend. Less humid tomorrow. The only real chance of some showers possibly on saturday afternoon, just a slight chance up in the poconos. We do have an official heat wave. We hit 93 two days in a row, 90 so far today, and we do expect at least low 90s coming up for the next couple and even into early next week. So this will be about a seven to nine day heat wave, probably, by the time its over. Temperatures are knocked down into the 70s right now where its been raining. Still in the 80s to near 90 where it hasnt. The feelslike temperature was 98 degrees in philadelphia a couple hours ago. Now its 80. 75 degrees in wilmington, delaware. So that is quite a change in just a short period of time. The early showers moving out, becoming less humid after midnight. 73 for a low in philadelphia. 63 north and west. During the day tomorrow, a lot of sunshine. Still going to be hot but not nearly as humid. You will notice that change. This is a real big drop in humidity. The sevenday forecast is still relatively low humidity saturday and sunday so the heat wont be so bad but monday and into tuesday, its really going to get hot and humid as we see the southerly winds come back and we will finally break this thing by the middle of next week.
