The remaining smokestack at a Clermont County power plant came crashing down Friday morning. Crews imploded the smokestack at the former Beckjord power station. The structure had stood for nearly 70 years, initially built in the early 1950s and decommissioned in 2014. The power-generating facility was originally built by Cinergy, which was bought by Duke Energy in 2006. The facility was initially slated to shutter in 2015, but was escalated in wake of a diesel fuel spill into the Ohio River. In 2014, a failed tank-to-tank transfer at Beckjord Power Plant led to approximately 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel being spilled into the river.Friday’s implosion closed roads around the site for around two hours.
