After the nice sunset tonight, a beautiful evening waking up to refreshing air tomorrow, the temperatures in the 50s and 60s after overnight lows and the temperatures jumped nicely. Saturday the better half of the weekend. Sunday clouds and even passing showers in the afternoon and while we will look at these rainfall totals and you can see where things were wet, a lot of the spots have dried out rapidly because of the low humidity that we have had today and also a light breeze. As far as the front goes, this is really where it stays for a part of the weekend. So eastern long island is hard to rule out a shower for you either saturday or sunday. Saturday is the better day but it looks like sunday we could even see a retreat of that front and our showers will become more widespread. So if youre wondering should i head down the shore or stay inland, it looks like its going to be best west of new york city but even getting down along the shorelines and even for parts of western long island, some of the beaches should be just fine. Looking at our futurecast, clouds do hug the shore at times but really on saturday late the eastern portion of long island is the only place that gets wet on our future models. By sunday sweeping some of that moisture back in from about 4 00 or 5 00 on, there could be a rain shower across the city but it will eventually clear out. Consumer reports has some advice on the most important thing to look for. Heres Shirleen Allicot with all the details. Reporter for many students backtoschool happiness hinges on the backpack. I like to focus like on the color, see how much space is in it, pockets to hold extra stuff. Try on this backpack. Reporter experts say there are other important attributes to consider as well to ensure comfort and prevent injury. The most important thing is fit for sure. Reporter look for straps, wide, padded and contoured, a waist belt is another key detail. The top of the shoulder strap should sit one or 2 inches below the soldiers and you want the shoulders and you want the bottom of the pack to rest in the small of your back, never more than 4 inches below the waistline. If the backpack has the right features and fits properly then a good one will distribute the weight more evenly on your body and take pressure off your back and shoulders. Reporter reflective trim can also be important particularly if your child walks to school. Consumer reports has tested backpacks extensively over the years, lifting, lowering and tumbling them to check durability. If youre in a store and want an idea of how well made a bag is, take a peek inside. If you see things like loose threads or sloppy stitching, raw unfinished edges its usually a sure sign that the bag wasnt made well. Reporter a little homework before you buy can help you ace this assignment. Shirleen allicot, channel 7 Eyewitness News. Another important step from preventing injuries to check out how heavy your childs backpack is when it is fully loaded. Recommendations that students carry no more than 10 to 20 of their body weight but sometimes the students will tell you they have no choice and they have to deal with it like that because thats how much assignments they have. Turning to breaking news, there has been a shooting reported outside of a Federal Building. It happened on two varick street in west houston, this happened a short time ago at around 5 00 p. M. Its unclear how many people were injured but we know that two males were shot and one of the victims is apparently an nypd Security Guard. We are being told they are being moved to Bellevue Hospital and they are looking, earlier reports, they are looking for suspects who may be they believe are in custody that they are questioning at this point. This is at the Federal Building, department of justice level one is where outside the building at two varick street where the shooting occurred. A lot of details still coming word on it. And we are actually getting new information as youre talking, this apparently happened at 201 varick street but apparently a suspect is now in custody, again, a shooting outside of a Federal Building, happened around 5 00 p. M. , a suspect is under in custody right now and being questioned, that federal employee. We dont know a lot more beyond that at this point but this information very fluid, just coming into our newsroom. Of course we are going to continue to update the very latest information throughout the day on 7online, abc7ny and of course we will have anything new comes on this story, we will bring it to you as soon as. We have newscopter 7 headed to that scene right now and we geico motorcycle, great rates for great rides. Want to go back to that breaking news of a shooting at 201 varick, this is a Federal Building. We have word of two people shot and one person in custody. Shannon sohn, newscopter 7, over the scene right now and, shannon, what do you know . Reporter yeah, david, the details are still coming in as you mentioned, this shooting happened at about 5 00 this afternoon, right at the intersection of varick street and west houston street. You mentioned this is a Federal Building it does house the Immigration Court. We know at this point that two people were shot. You can see that varick street completely shut down here with all of this Police Department activity. Initial reports are that one of the people that were shot was an nypd officer, supposedly a Security Guard. He has been removed to Bellevue Hospital, he is en route there now. If you are traveling around the city, you are going to want to avoid hussion street hudson street heading east to 14th street and then north on first avenue as they are barricading that route to get to the hospital. One person shot as well. That person was a suspect in the shooting. Unclear if there are any other suspects at large but they do have one suspect in custody. That suspect has been shot along with a member of the nypd. You can see this is a story that is still developing. You can see how the police tape is up along varick street right at the intersection with west houston street. You can see the cars are stopped, literally haphazardly. Police still trying to gain control of the situation but what we understand, the shooting did take place in or around the Federal Building that houses the Immigration Court but that that one suspect has been shot and is now at least being questioned and in custody by police, unclear if there are any other suspects but of course we will keep you updated as we get any more of this. Reporting live over varick street, shannon sohn, channel 7 Eyewitness News. Shannon, just stay with us for a moment so we get a better idea of the scene. You say this building that the shooting happened on or in or around on varick street it also includes the Immigration Court. Does it also include the Federal Post Office there as well . Reporter yeah, the Federal Post Office i believe is the building just to the south of it. If i have this right, this is the Federal Post Office and to the north side of your picture, that is 201 varick street and that is where they house the Immigration Court, so what is unclear when im looking at this picture, you see so much Police Department activity at ground level closing the street off, either thats because they are searching for more suspects or its possible that some of the activity happened outside the building. That part we are still unclear on, police are trying to take care of their own and get that Police Officer into surgery if its necessary but certainly getting that officer to Bellevue Hospital and hopefully we will get more details on exactly where the shooting took place as this unfolds. Okay, shannon. Thank you very much. And again the shooting happening outside of a Federal Building on 201 varick street, two people shot, one person in custody. Right now youre looking at live pictures from newscopter 7, we do have a crew there on the scene trying to get some information. We are going to continue to follow this story, bring you any new jeopardy as soon as we get ok. So everyone is saying hey, youve gotta get fios. but why . Why fios . So by the way, we are about five weeks away from taking a full hour off of the sunset time so enjoy these long Daylight Hours as long as we can. Sunny and warm for saturday, clouds and a passing shower on sunday. Heres the reason. Looking at the radar satellite combination, there is a front stalled just offshore. Thats what brought us all the rain. It wont move. Its going to hang out for several days and by sunday it actually pulls back just a little bit further to the west and that brings showers inland once again. So while brookhaven all the way out to riverhead, you still got a shower to deal with tonight, everybody else stays dry and even going into saturday afternoon things look pretty to the fort. Cant rule out a shower there. Sunday all of the moisture shoved back in, it looks like it will linger for the second half of sunday into monday for the early part east. Making a weekend getaway, the catskills, hamptons and jersey shore, same story, saturday looks better than sunday, we will see the option for temperatures to return to the low 80s by late next week. So we will call it sunny and nice, 86 the high. Tonight going down to the 60s in the city, we will go for the 50s for areas north and west. The accuweather sevenday forecast, monday starts humid, 86 degrees, 85 on tuesday. Still kind of muggy and warm. Then wednesday its a refreshing air mass with 83 the high, right on target for this time of year taking us thursday and friday of next week, low 80s, thats just about on target for the average high for this time of year. So saturday the better day. Thank you, amy. We want to turn now to the breaking news we have been following, a shooting happening outside of a Federal Building.
