Police on an update on the truck driver. For now we are live here in linen linden, toni yates, channel 7 Eyewitness News. Lets get an update from shannon sohn from high above in newscopter 7. Weve done the tour around from the north, south, east, no matter how you try and get around this new jersey turnpike closure its a nice mate nightmare. That is the southbound delay into interstate 10. What you are finding is all of this traffic is backed up getting right into interchange 10 and this is what the problem really is right here, we can show you with sky rider 7 once you get off the 10 you have an option to take to the northbound side, you can get onto the outer roadway, it is just the inner roadway that is closed down but that is where that inner roadway merges in right here and it is causing nightmare traffic. It is a little bit better than it was before but we are going to show you the reason for that. This right here coming into the center of your picture is woodbridge avenue, nice local street and it is packed with traffic and that is what all of your alternates are doing right now. It is a nightmare trying to get around this and you can expect to add hours to your commute this evening. Reporting live over the turnpike shannon sohn, channel 7 Eyewitness News. Thats a look at the impact around the crash scene. Debbie duhaime has spent the afternoon looking at ways to get around the accident and she is in the newsroom. Major problem because of this accident, this is the Staten Island expressway, look at this volume, this is westbound trying to get out toward the goethals bridge. 440 southbound to get to the outer bridge crossing to get down near the new jersey turnpike. That way cannot go to the gothfuls bridge goethals bridge. A lot of alternate volume of course on 1 and 9 in both directions. Another look through elizabeth at 109, so very messy this afternoon. Over on the new jersey turnpike again the car and truck lanes remain closed southbound as you head from 13 down through 12 as we go over to the maps right now, and keep in mind as you head over to the northbound side, everything is going to be closed as well in the car lanes as you head 12 out through 13 as well so keep an eye on that for you. And youre still seeing volume on the garden state parkway. Back over to you at the desk, diana. Thank you, debbie. Another breaking story in new jersey, firefighters still on the scene of that six alarm fire at an apartment complex in ocean township. The flames now under control but the damage losses still being determined. Eyewitness News Reporter a. J. Ross just arriving on the scene moments ago. A. J. Reporter firefighters have been battling this blaze for nearly four hours and counting and as you mentioned, it was at one point labeled a six alarm fire because of the backup that was called in. You can see its now under control but it was a vicious blaze that sent two Police Officers to the hospital with more than a dozen firefighters treated for heat exhaustion. Take a look at this amazing video shot earlier this afternoon, im told the blaze started around 1 15 near a south exterior and then quickly spread up and into the units. Initial reports claim the flames began to smolder from foliage along the perimeter of the property, possibly a mulch fire. The Police Officers on scene desperately ran door to door to get people out and they were taken to a nearby hospital and treated for smoke inhalation. One was released a short time ago and 12 units total were completely destroyed in this blaze, displacing several dozen families. Todays heat was another huge challenge with 15 firefighters being treated for heat exhaustion. Another firefighter was also transported for a minor facial injury and a fire marshal is on scene right now waiting for the all clear but again heat is presenting problems. Its been very dry, been very hot summer. Im sure that contributed. We believe that the fire origin was on the exterior of the building, either mulch or the trees and quickly worked up and worked into the building. Reporter now, you can see theres still some smoke rising from these units and firefighters will be out here for at least a couple more hours checking for hot spots insuring this area is secure. I spoke with a pio a short time ago. He calls this the biggest fire this area has had in his 30 year tenure. We will have much more with some of residents coming up on Eyewitness News at 6 00. A. J. Ross, channel 7 Eyewitness News. Thank you. Breaking news in manhattan where a vehicle somehow ended up on a sidewalk and hit someone. This happened on east 50th street and park avenue. For now we are live in setauket, im stacey sager, channel 7 Eyewitness News. Feel for folks there. Thank you. Meteorologist lee goldberg warned us the storms were coming. Lee, you watched them move through overnight . So dangerous when the storms have timing like this, and you see it a handful of times each summer when you have a dramatic rise in humidity overnight. Its almost a dew point front where things spike. That really fires up thunderstorms, this was between 2 00 and 7 00 in the morning and even a smaller window from about 4 00 to 6 00 a. M. When the storms exploded over manhattan and over the five boroughs and then on the north shore of long island is where they peaked in strength. Mayor de blasio announcing the number of cases in the bronx has gone up even more since last night. There are now 86 cases and that includes seven deaths. Dave evans is in the south bronx. Reporter as you know, this has nothing to do with water tanks on the tops of old the city. Rather, we are talking about cooling towers on buildings on the top of buildings like this one here at Lincoln Hospital. It has been decontaminated, also four other cooling towers on the top of four other fairly modern buildings here in this part of the city. Now, earlier today, city officials put out this graph showing the growth of legionnaires disease in the south bronx, it goes up, up, up until about july 30th. That is the high point, the most cases that we have seen and then you can see a dropoff over the last few days. I think we are going to be grappling with all of this until sometime around august 14th. The mayor today sought to calm peoples fears about an outbreak of legionnaires in the south bronx. They have isolated the bacteria in five cooling hours on the tops of buildings including here at Lincoln Hospital and they have all been cleaned with bleach. Also the big message here, you cant catch legionnaires from somebody who already has it. Most importantly and thank god it is not contagious disease, in other words, cannot be passed from person to person. Reporter the bacteria comes from cooling towers and mist thats released into the atmosphere, Drinking Water is completely safe and, again, its not spread person to person. This is not the time to let an older member of your family say i dont want to go to the doctor. Today city officials asked for the publics help if someone is older in the south bronx and has a cough, ache or flulike symptom, go to a hospital. Legionnaires disease is very treatable. Its curable. With antibiotics that are readily available. Still around Lincoln Hospital a lot of people are worried. Do you feel safe right now coming to this part of the bronx . No, i actually came here and i was like, i got to go to lincoln today so i was just like, you know, i dont feel safe. I didnt even want to come here today. I was a little like, should i go there or go somewhere else . And now city officials are also riding a new law mandating the licensing and inspection of all tower cooling units in the city. There wasnt an identified pattern that suggested these cooling towers were a problem. Now we have a pattern. So thats why we need legislation immediately. So the city council is going to be taking up this new law here in just the next few days. It wont outbreak but hopefully it will prevent future outbreaks of this disease. Now, we want to reiterate, the atmosphere around this hospital, also the other four units that had these cooling hours, we believe it is safe and that is because they have decontaminated with bleach and some other products these cooling towers and it sounds as if they were safe now. But they are looking at some other locations in the south bronx. Also the incubation period for legionnaires disease is 10 days so we might be dealing with this for another week so so. For now reporting live in the south bronx, dave evans, channel 7 Eyewitness News. Thank you, dave. A lot of people anxious about this. Its certainly something that is very disastrous not only to the local community and the families that are involved, but when you look at it from the standpoint of a child and the childs father that lost their life, the family was being disrupted forever. You figure, ill wake up the next damage and they will show damage from other places. When its happening to you you have to seek shelter and Pay Attention to the warnings. We will be in the all clear side from these storms tonight. Now, drone cam 7 is actually doing a version of a storm survey. Now, you saw stacey sager out in setauket and when we have damage from a storm, you look at how that damage is oriented around the area. You know, do you see a circular damage pattern or is it more like, you know, big giant foot just stomped on the area and everything is in one direction and youre seeing trees in the same direction here indicating more Straight Line wind damage and we heard from meteorologist jeff smith earlier and he said they reported 70 to 90mileper hour winds, Straight Line winds so these are very quick moving storms, incredible, and thats why they brought those trees down and to bring big trees down like that, you know you have to have over 60mileper hour winds. Similar to what you would do in an aerial storm survey. Back now to central park with patchy clouds over the meadow, it looks beautiful, we are in good shape. Futurecast isnt giving up on that right now, but certainly after 8 00 or 9 00 we are in good shape there. Meanwhile, High Pressure should build in tomorrow, give us a great day, even thursday looks fine, just some clouds are going to be increasing, its this broad area of low pressure that we are watch the storm track and some good news today is that this storm track is trending farther south, may allow us to salvage part of friday and saturday. Less humid tomorrow at 87 degrees, really Beautiful Day and a nice day on thursday as well, high clouds are fanning into the area and theres that rain threat to the south that we are looking for, possibly for friday and early saturday. Isolated thunderstorm early, partly cloudy to clear, lowering humidity 73, we are up to 87 tomorrow, its breezy, warm, the humidity so low it will feel great, mostly clear and comfortable tomorrow night, some 50s in some suburbs north and west. Heres what we are working on for 5 30, will the storm plan to stay south on friday, maybe rain over central and southern new jersey, on saturday morning do we have to deal with any rain on the east end . Longterm futurecast because im sure youve been hearing about this late week rain threat. Look at whats happening with this storm threat, see all the rain right here coming out of the middle of the country, instead of coming right at us, it looks like a lot of this rain wants to dip to our south. Now, this particular model may be pushing it too far south, i can see how central and southern new jersey gets into rain but our northern suburbs may stay dry into friday and that may leave the scene in time for the weekend with early rain along the coast. New information, that looked like its good trend there if youre looking at your outdoor trends friday and saturday. 87 tomorrow, the pick of the week, clouds on the increase on thursday but still a nice day, rain especially south of new york city on friday, a lot of area could stay dry, clouds and a shower could exit early on saturday and the bulk of the weekend looking fine. That would make it 22 in august and also the extreme heat going away. Now we are going to go into more cooler pattern. Thank you. I suspect this applies to men as well as women.
