UPDATE: SUSPECT IS IN CUSTODY Wayne County Sheriff's Deputy, Sean Riley was shot and killed before daylight this morning on Interstate 64 while responding to a motorist assist call shortly before 5 am. When another officer arrived at the scene, Deputy Riley was discovered deceased. The suspects then stole the deputy's patrol vehicle which was later found abandoned. An official near the scene said the deputy was pronounced dead at 5:07 Wednesday morning. Interstate 64 was shut down for an extended period of time while the heavily armed manhunt took place. It is believed the suspect then hijacked a semi-truck driver who dropped him off in St Peter Missouri. St. Peters police confirmed the suspect wanted in the deputy's death was later connected to a shooting and carjacking at a QuikTrip on Main Street. Around 7 a.m., the suspect drove away from the gas station after shooting another man while stealing his car. The shooting victim was taken to the hospital in stable condition. Surveillance images were then released of the "armed and dangerous" man. The stolen vehicle was later found in O'Fallon, Missouri off Highway 70, according to police. After ditching that car, the suspect reportedly stole a white Nissan Titan truck with Missouri plates of 0WE A43. Police shut down some area highways to search for the suspect. At 12:00 the suspect was believed to be identified as a male out of Kentucky with unconfirmed reports of another stolen vehicle in Greenville, IL. At 12:19 it was reported that the suspect had just attempted to burglarize a residence in Carlyle, IL. Fled in the tan Ford Freestyle or Flex Station Wagon with Dealer Registration. Suspect: Ray Tate W M 6'0, 240 lbs. from Kentucky. At 12:27 the Stolen Ford Flex was located in a garage on Beaver Rd. in Carlyle. Unoccupied. An update at 12:31 stated that Clinton County IL was advising of a female being held hostage in her residence in Carlyle by the suspect. At 2:30 p.m. police on scene of the hostage situation confirmed that a suspect was in custody. The body of Deputy Riley was brought to the Vanderburgh County Coroner's Office around 10 a.m. accompanied by area law enforcement agencies and returned home to Fairfield shortly before 4 pm. Fairfield Mayor Mike Dreith has ordered all flags under city control to fall to half-staff due to the tragedy which claimed the life of Wayne County Deputy Riley stating, "Our hearts are heavy." The Wayne County Sheriff's Department was scheduled to hold a press conference around time of recording of this broadcast. We'll have more in depth details on tomorrow morning's news.
