on the road again. this holiday weekend, americans are hit the highway, but does eaper capacity mean more families are taking road trips? we'll take a look at the numbers. labor lost. there are more people out of work than at anytime in the last 26 years. when will the jobs return? today a glimmer of hope. reading, writing, and the swine flu. lots of kids are head back to school this week and there's more to worry about than just home work. with the virus breaking out at schools around the nation, we've got the tips that could help you stay safe. and tennis history. one lucky ball boy got the job kids dream about, but this slip up has made him a youtube sensation and now his big break. he joins erica and me "early" this saturday morning, september he joins erica and me "early" this saturday morning, september 5th, 2009. captioning funded by cbs welcome to the irldly show oig here on a saturday morning. it is the labor day weekend. it is going to be immaculate here on the east coast. >> it's going to be gorgeous. good to be with us. but already the last weekend of summer. i'm not giving up until it's actually over and we have the eek wi knox. >> the final unofficial weekend of summer will be dynamite. the last two have been tropical storms around here, really terrible news for all the beaches on the east coast, so they have a little bit of a reprieve. so happy you're with us. >> of course laeb day also means for a lot of kids if they're not already back to school they are heading back probably on tuesday. and a lot of kids understandably nervous. we'll look at the top back to school fear he is and how you can help your little one get through that. >> so many different things for the kids to worry about, whether they'll be accepted, whether they'll be bullied, whether they'll like their teacher respect. i used to r are ue the first day of school because with a name like christian raggie, every teacher used to butcher it. >> i'm glad you made it through. >> so i shortened it to chris. a lot easier. also we'll it take a look the weapons of mass reduction. but first top stories. we heard yesterday the growing number of people without a job, the labor department reported that the unemployment rate climbed to 9.7% last month. almost 15 million people are now jobless and that's the highest level since 1983. it's a big hur he will to clear, but guess what, there is a glimmer of hope and anthony mason has more.ei >> reporter: the unemployment rate jumped to a 26 year high, but the pace of job erosion continues to slow. while another 216,000 jobs were lost in august, that's still the economy's best performance in a year. >> the i don't be market is on the mend. it will be a long, painful recover rirks but we're headed in the right direction. >> reporter: the dow rallied nearly 100 points on the new, but add in those who have given up looking for jobs or been forced to take part-time work and the so-called under employed rate is now at a record 16.8%. and some are it turning to desperate measures. >> i've applied for hundreds of jobs literally and have had three iervintsew interviews sin. >> reporter: jonathan colby, laid off from his job in architecture, includes a dunkin donuts gift card when he sends out resumes and is offering a small video camera to anyone who helps him land a job. >> it's also just a little bit of a bribe, and i'm not above bribing people a little pit, to look at my resume. >> reporter: jonathan is one of 5 million americans who have now been out of work for more than there's a divide in a group of economists as to which one will prevail. >> peter cook, from washington this morning, thank you you very much. >> you bet. now here's erica with this morning's other big stories. it is of course labor day weekend. for a the lot of kids, they're thinking one thing, back to school. here in new york city, one in ten people that have contracted the h1n1 virus, or swine flu, has a lot of people worried about back to school. mayor bloomberg announced free vak sin nations for all elementary school students in new york once they become available, but officials are saying it will affect at higher rates than at seasonal flu making schools a breeding ground for affection. here's hattie kaufman. >> reporter: less than two weeks in to the school year, hundreds of desks are empty at nevada union high school near sacramento. >> yesterday i was notified by our nurses that we had 300 kids out. and i wasn't real surprised. we had anticipated the flu going through. >> reporter: most absent kids complain of high fever, aches and congestion, all signs of h1n1. >> but kids are out for a lot of other things, as well. they have colds, allergies, but obviously the h1n1 is here and people are dealing with it. >> people are being affected -- >> reporter: cindy is a registered nurses whose so that has been out a week with flu-like symptoms. she says the outbreak is no surprise. >> when kids get had school, they share drinkses, they share bites off their sandwicheses or bites off candy bars and they're not real good about hand washing. >> reporter: yesterday alone, 24 schools were closed nationwide. health officials cause more outbreaks are sure to come. hat itity kaufman, cbs new, los angeles. the h1n1 virus isn't just a problem for schools. more than 2,000 cases of swine flu has been reported at colleges and universities. take a look at this matt we put together for you. nearly 300 cases reported in pennsylvania, 283 in georgia, 223 in washington. just a little bit more than that in missouri. north carolina ringing in with 165 cases, 147 in colorado. texas and florida have also been affected. so here to give us a good idea on how we can protect our kids when they go back to school, dr. levine back with us today. in some ways colleges, there used to be a cluster of mono. but are schools you think being proactive enough in taking the right steps when there are outbreaks? >> i think they're beginning to because this is a very contagious virus and in close quarters like dorms or common eating area, those are places where the virus can spread. so it's important that the schools sort of have a plan. if children do get sick, they need to separate them from everybody else who is healthy and that will maximize the number of people who stay well and can continue to -- >> which i know some of them are handing out swine flu kits. when it comes to elementary schools, we just heard hattie mentioning that a high school in california, 300 students out. not necessarily all had the flu, but some staying home. is it still kids and young adults who are most at risk? >> the cdc published a report earlier this week that looks at the death prs swine flu and they found that actual itly the majority of them, 80%, were in children older than age five, which is different from what we've seen presley from seasonal flu. but take it with a grain of salt. thankfully we've only seen about 36 deaths, so it may be as the numbers increase those statistics will change. but what is clear is that chern with underlying medical condition, whether a respiratory condition or neurologic condition, are definitely more at risk. >> because some of those children did have something else going on. if there is an outbreak, should you automatically keep your child at home even if they don't have any symptoms? >> i don't think so. i think that we need to keep kids in school learning, we need to keep parents in the work tors. but i think that we need to be smart about things and there are a number of things we can to. one is teach your children how to wash their hands properly and frequently. much more frequent lly than the ordinarily would. second of all we into need to vaccinate children. we need to keep kids home when they are sick and keep our kids away from other children feeling sick. >> and the swine flu vaccine is vaebl nis -- the seasonal vaccine is available some some areas. swine flu is not available yet. some great tips this morning. and now here's priya. welcome back. good morning. the unfish end of summer is here. a holiday weekend for reporter: yeah, about 39 million americans are expected to travel this holiday weekend. that's about 50 miles away from home. and then also coming back. one of the hottest travel destinations is, of course, the beach. really, really excited? >> really, really, really good. >> reporter: vacation for this 5-year-old started with a splash. but this isn't his family's typical labor day vacation. you call this a staycation? >> we dubbed this our staycation. >> reporter: instead of flying to the caribbean, they drove only an hour from their home in westchester, new york to catch the waves at coney island. >> due to the economic factor, we thought we'd try to to be a little more close to home. >> reporter: aaa estimates the average road trip is about 645 miles and families will spend an average of $968. mostly on transportation, lodging and food. >> the overwhelming majority of people are traveling by car this weekend and the numbers for air travel are off by about 20% compared to la to last year. >> reporter: 6 million fewer are traveling. it's the end of summer hoorah, but for some it's coming way too soon. fun so far? >> yeah. >> reporter: want to do it depend? >> yeah. >> reporter: want to go home is this. >> no. >> reporter: at about 60% to 70% of their traveling will be heading out to see family and friends. of course if you go out, you have to come back home and travel experts say the busiest time if you're traveling back will be between 6:00 p.m. and midnight on monday. something to certainly keep in mind. >> absolutely time to watch out for. you didn't get the
