We are going to see the visibilities drop. So a lot of people not on the roads. Thats good. Were getting the roads cleaned up for you. And within the next couple of hours, if you head out for work or your commute, we are going to see some slick spots, especially on the side roads. The treated roads seem to be doing okay. 31 degrees though. Here comes the snow. Are we seeing it really come down. Notice the areas in blue. Well zoom in in just a moment. I want to bring your attention back off to 81, the back edge ever the storm so we know its not going to be lasting for too much longer. Were talking mid to late morning. Then after lunch time things look be looking a lot better as far as weather conditions. Well still have issues on the side roads especially. Later on tonight anything left over will freeze. Here we go with light snow continuing. We had the big, fat flakes earlier. Now were starting to see things get a little lighter but its still accumulating. As we travel farther south, this is the area were seeing the snow come down about an inch an hour up to near 2 inches an hour and down through reedville, northern parts of virginia, we are seeing near 5 inches of snow. It is starting to accumulate, especially on the grassy surfaces. All the way from prince georges stretching to port royal. Thats where were seeing the snow continue. Count on it being a little dreary with visibilities dropping for a little while longer. Areas off to the west of 95 will start to clear out a little bit. By lunch time hafnging off to the hanging off to the eastern shore, clouds will continue. Might see breaks in the clouds late other by 4 00 but we will get up to the mid40s and it will be a cold day and a cold next couple of days. Were keeping a close eye on the traffic situation in and around town. If youll be making your way up from dale city all the way up toward the beltway, were looking at a pretty incident free commute. No problems there this morning. We did have some earlier issues but they really werent impacting the rush hour which is certainly some good news there. For my friends, however, out in maryland, were talking about a little bit of a different story. We had some slowdowns from the drive from frederick toward the beltway. Right now youre looking at 121. You can see that the volume is starting to build up on the southbound side here of i270. But again no issues that are going to impact the morning commute. If anything, were just starting to see snow start to pick up which means you need to drop the speed and also increase the space between you and the driver in front of you because certainly we dont want you to get hurt out there. For many of you taking amtrak, i believe we have a couple of delays and cancellations you need to know about. If youre youre looking well get to that in a second. Right now want to give you a look at branch avenue. We talked about an accident that had been going on. I believe it was over on this side. Looks like the accident cleared up on the inner loop of the beltway at branch avenue. We saw some minor delays. Those delays have since eased up so were not seeing any problems along the beltway. 295 also looking good as well. The southeastsouthwest freeway also looking good. No problems there. So it looks like a really seamless commute for the most part. Again dropped speed, increase the space and allow yourself to get to your destination give yourself extra time to get to your destination, i should say. As far as metro, we talked about delays on the blue as well as the yellow line. Those have all since been resolved. Looks like everything is moving freely and moving smoothly on metro as well. Mike and andrea, back to you. You can see from the camera larry was showing us visibility is dropping so another reason to give yourself space and slow it down. Essentially this is the commute that folks are dealing with as they head into the district and head into work. Surprisingly, even though Charles County schools are canceled for the day and lots of schools, businesses are requesting and calling for delays, lots ever folks are still out on the roads. I was driving about an hour ago and it was a little tricky. Could not even see the lines, the pavement. It was quite thick. In the last hour, some improvement. You can still see there is some accumulation on the roads so certainly as larry is suggesting, take your time, drive slowly but state highway saying hey, listen, dont even get out here if you dont have to. Take a look at some of the snow accumulation on these untreated surfaces. On the side of the road. There happens to be a wreck. You can see in the median there a car that has succumbed to the slick conditions. Certainly that looks like a fourwheel drive suv. So you are not even in the clear if youre driving a four wheel drive. Everyone has to take it slow, take it easy if you are out on the roads. The logo, the slogan that state highway is using, take it slow, ice and snow. So thats the very latest conditions as were heading into the district and la plata. Snow is affecting a big part of the rush hour. That includes Prince William county in virginia where the snow continues to fall. Nikki burdine is there. Can we still see where x marks the spot at your location, nikki . Reporter let me show you the x. I was just looking at it. I can barely see it. Im not sure you can or not. It was right here. You can barely see it. It is almost completely covered up. Heres the situation. Vdot brought out almost 1500 crews around 4 00 this morning to start treating those roads and getting them ready for the morning commute. But its still pretty dangerous out here and they are still asking people to stay at home or at least delay their commute if at all possible. This is why. You can see the parking lot here. This is what it looks like when it is untreated and when nothing is coming through here. You take a look at the road, thats where commuters have been driving through here on this commuter lot and that kind of slush, thats where it can get dangerous. Thats what the interstates look like around here. Of course we have vdot crews dropping down salt and ready to plow if necessary but it is still dangerous and especially when you get a lot of commuters out on the road on 95 headed into the city. Its going to get slushy, slick and dangerous and visibility is going to be a lot lower because you can see a lot of flakes coming down here right now. A lot of commuters out here right now. They have been here all morning in this commuter lot off of 95 in Prince William county. I will tell you, though, that slug line is usually a lot longer than that so it is looking a little bit shorter than it usually is this time of the morning. Maybe thats a testament of people able to stay at home this morning or to delay their commute. But if you are about to head out the door, this is what youre going to see. Allow for a lot of extra time coming from Prince William county as you head on 95 into virginia. Its going to be a slick commute and going to be a long one. Back to you in the studio. They chose to delay their start time by two hours to avoid sending youngsters to school during a snowy morning rush hour. Nick giovanni is live in northwest d. C. What about the roads, nick . Reporter d. C. Public schools one of the first to make the call. I can tell you a pretty good move. As you look right now, its given road crews a chance to make the round around wisconsin avenue in northwest. Weve seen traffic moving freely right now although the volume of traffic is starting to finally pick up at this hour. About half an hour ago we saw someone louing the sidewalk. It is now plowing the sidewalk. Its once again completely covered. Theyll have to make another round on the sidewalk right now. Were seeing pretty much the same kind of progression along the side streets like van ness and upton in northwest d. C. That pretty much sums up what were looking at. The main roads are not having much of an issue because road crews have been making the rounds. Taking it to the next level if you look off wisconsin avenue, there are piles of salt that have been dropped on wisconsin avenue right now. Being disbursed as cars drive along it. When schools open up two hours late and well as federal agencies, they will have a smoother ride into work on the main roads. Thanks a lot, nick. They were on a delay first but now theyve changed to close this morning. I think over the next two to four hours well see the snow end from west to east. We have moderate snow south and east of town. We still have accumulating snows even though theyre light to cause the problems and school closures. Heres a look at our forecast for today. Somewhere behind that reduced visibility is Reagan National. We are talking about temperatures eventually 30 to 35 with a little peek or two of sun. The snow generally 1 to 2 for the metro with 2 to 4 south but far Southern Maryland down past fredricksburg, were seeing 4 to 6, locally 8 places like reedville and the Northern Neck where an hour ago jan told me 5 inches and still snowing. Theres the storm pulling off to the east, northeast. Snow in pennsylvania. It gets heavier when you get into southern new jersey. All the blue from southwest jersey across northern delaware, across maryland, thats where were seeing the pockets of moderate to heavy snow. Still snowing out toward the metro. Out toward 81 things are quieting down with a heavy band of snow just south of Prince Frederick crossing through Northern Areas of st. Marys county. Watch out on route 5, 235. This goes back looks like across the river there to parts of virginia. Things will be improving for the afternoon so if you do need to get out, just be patient. It will be a lot safer later. Larry miller, not so bad north of town but south another story. Reporter south is another story. We are talking about some of the accidents we saw. There were sporadic here and there but not causing any major delays which when you think about the height of rush hour, certainly something you want to hear that these accidents while unfortunate arent impacting the other drivers making their way to town to get to school and work this morning. If youre traveling on 66 heading eastbound from centreville toward the beltway, youll have no issues this morning. Were starting to see volume pick up in fairfax but no major problems. A live look outside at nutley street shows us the amount of traffic starting to build. Looks like a little bit more than what we saw in the last halfhour so looks like drivers are feeling confident to head out on the road. Remember, give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination. No need to rush. For those of you on the beltway at river road, you can can see volume starting to build both on the inner and outer loops of the beltway. We dont have any accidents to report there which is certainly good news. Certainly a lot of those roads were ready pretreated so looks like the preventive action has definitely helped the chute this morning but again take it slow, give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination. For those of you on amtrak, we want to let you know about a couple of canceled trains. 174, 66, 94, canceled this morning. Also delays on metro that we had talked about on the yellow and blue line have been resoffed. All trains run resolved. All trains running on time. Back to you. Snow is picking up in Northern Virginia where many schools delayed and then closed when they realized the snow was getting worse. We have a look at the conditions now from greg. Reporter good morning. Were southbound 95 at garrisonville at the moment. As you can see, the pavement is wet, although there are some slushy spots. Coming southbound from the washington metro area, i noticed a particular increase in the amount of slush and covering on the roads just south of Prince William county. Were exiting now. Were going to go west on Virginia Route 16 in the heart of garrisonville. This is of course the location of the origin of a lot of commuters who come into the city in the morning. I would say that the roads are in very good shape. A temperature at 31 degrees has given the treatment of the highway, the salt and the brine they put down a chance to really do their job. You can see here as we exit on to what would be a secondary road 610, theres a bit more slush on the road but nothing thats really too difficult to drive n. I think the big problem here is stopping because even though the temperature is 31 degrees, you see a lot of bare pavement. Underneath some of the splush is a little bit of ice slush is a little bit of ice and it can be a bit dicey. The word is to use some caution. Thanks, greg, driving along i95 in garrisonville. Fairfax county schools one of the districts that closed this morning as well. Its coming up 07 15. Howard is s phone out. The roads are much worse especially st. Marys, calvert, Colonial Beach area. Watch out down that way. Lets show you whats happening with doppler. Were starting to see the storm pull away from west virginia, southwestern virginia. Still heavy snows. Richmond a lot of sixinch plus totals in the richmond area. They got hit hard with areas in williamsburg, virginia beach. A little bit of sleet may have mixed in toward virginia beach. Back toward winchester and points west, not too much going on west of i81. Still a little bit of light snow. It was the timing today just did a number on the commute and the schools. A twohour delay or nothing. I guess they felt in two hours it wouldnt be good enough to get the kids safely to school so we have to err on the side of caution as always. The blue pulling away dover to eastton. Thats the heaviest stuff. Snow gets lighter toward northern Fauquier County out toward the blue ridge. Still snowing in Montgomery County. Folks are telling me the roads dont seem to be too bad there but watch out for the slick spots. Heres the heavier stuff. This band just south of Prince Frederick crossing route 2 coming toward 235 south of mechanicsville, this is a heavy snow band. An inch plus an hour in this band. This goes back across Colonial Beach and across the river. Maybe trying to lift slightly north as its coming this way. Front royal, Colonial Beach, thats got to be a slow ride on 3015. I think areas north of frederick wont get an inch. Maybe a little coating there. 1 to 2 from winchester to Montgomery County and the city. South of town, though, southern prince georges county, clinton, im thinking 2 closer to 4. 4 to in Southern Maryland, 8 in Southern Maryland, southern st. Calvert. A lot more as you head toward the richmond area. If you have to travel, give it a few hours. It will get better this afternoon. Heres a live look at Reagan National on our weather camera. Reduced visibilities. Reagan says they are still open. They have some delays. Check with your airlines if youre flying today. 32 at 10 00. So you can see the slick roads this morning as people have been talking about and conditions like this, you certainly want to take it easy. And driving in these conditions, you know, its all about trying to stay in your lane and following the tire tracks ahead of you because we have been seeing really varying conditions on the road. You can see here things are looking really good just about half a mile down the road when we were closer down into Charles County, the la plata area, very slushy and very thick and slick conditions there. So you are going to run into a lot of different conditions. Even on the same rode as you are approaching your commute into work this morning and that is why lots of jurisdictions have delayed school, delayed work, even suggesting folks stay home if they can. Maryland state highway recommending that you delay your commute as well. We have been on the flip side and on the good side we have been seeing a lot of crews, state highway crews and even private contractors treating these roads. They have done a very good job as you can see but still a lot of accumulation. I dont know if you can take a look at the intersection over there. Really slushy conditions. We know as greg geist had been reporting on his travels that underneath that slush, just a very thin, thin layer of ice so you have to take it very easy and very slowly. Drive with caution as you are heading into work this morning. But again, the advice, if you can delay your commute by a couple of hours, probably a good idea to do so. We are here now approaching route 5 as we are continuing to make our way back into the district and following these commuters as theyre heading into work this morning. Thats the latest look here in Southern Maryland. Before you go, are you seeing road crews out there treating the streets . Because we see a lot of commuters but have you noticed any of those along the way . Reporter we certainly have. We have seen a lot of road crews treating the roads, but as i said, you know, im quite surprised that depending on are you are, the conditions really change. Here im taking a look the at the southbound lanes across the way and that looks pretty covered. Over here in the northbound lanes looks a lot better. And so certainly the traffic that weve been seeing on the northbound lanes i think coupled with the treatment on the road has kind of helped clear things out on the roadway but things are really looking a lot different, varying conditions depending on where and when youre traveling. So i would definitely take it easy, even though the crews are out here treating the roads. Lets go to virginia now, another place, Northern Virginia, Prince William county specifically, coming down quickly. Weve been seeing it snow steadily. How is it looking now . Reporter it hasnt stopped. The snow has been coming down pretty steadily since about 3 30 this morning when we got here. Just kind of a quick rundown, vdot crews came out here and started pretreating. At about 4 00 a. M. They had 1500 crews patrolling the streets. The high traffic areas, the interstates 95 specifically pretreating them and then just going around monitoring them making sure they didnt need to be plowed or anything like that. Its good thing they did because if you take a look at this parking lot, you can see how much snow has started to accumulate here. We have a lot of snow. Ill ask my photo journalist to follow me as i walk over here so you can see. You saw what the parking lot looks like. Obviously that hasnt been treated but this is where cars are driving through here on this commuter lot. You have a big slushy mess here. That is what people are dealing with when they come out here to this commuter lot. Thats what youre going to see when you head out the door this morning. So vdot is asking people to delay their commute, stay at home if they can. If you cannot, just be prepared. This is what our going to deal this is what our a going to deal with. Areas over toward easton, st. Michaels, tillman, youre getting it pretty good right now and will continue for a while longer. About 1 to 2 here in d. C. 2 to 4 south. Were looking at 4 to 6, maybe 8 in far southern st. Marys county and the Northern Neck. Larry . For my friends that take metro bus be mindful youll need to probably add about 15 to 20 minutes to your commute time because of the number of delays were starting to see right now. Take us to the courtroom when you knew the man who killed your brother was going to prison. You know we waited a long time to hear it. We had talked earlier, up to that point we always had that feeling, that sense that it was going to go our way, but you never know. You cant spend your entire time trying to watch them or read them. Theyre not going to show their hand. So we felt good up until the trial or the jury stepped out to deliver rate. We had no idea at that point where it was going to go and thats when the thoughts start racing and you just pray that its going to go right. Does it since seem to have paint add compelling case for insanity . Did you think he was insane . I never did, i never did. Even your own brother said this dude was straight up nuts. I used that term all the time. Chris used to use that term all the time. If he would have thought he was nuts, if he had a little bit of an idea that he was nuts it wouldnt have turned out that way. He would have never taken him to the shooting lainch. He wouldnt have taken him to the shooting range. Did that capture your brother . Is that the man that you knew . For the most part yes. Bradley did a phenomenal job in getting chris and getting his heart and putting it out there. What was it like for you looking at Eddie Ray Routh, sitting and watching him ever day. That was one of the hardest things ive endone. Seeing him in there, just no remowers. That was very difficult. There was a lot of times i wanted to get up but you know, hes not worth my time. I think one of the hardest things, too, about this story is chris survived those really tough deployment and came home to help veterans who were suffered from ptsd. Talk about your brother eerks you know deep desire to help other mem and women who served . He was like the way he was in country. He wanted everybody to have a chance to come home and once they came home then he didnt want it to stop there. So he was helping on and off the field. And whenever most military members are in held to that higher standard of fit ps and of course, that helps our middle being as well. So getting back into the gym is huge for vedrans, and chris saw that and started the Foundation Foundation for heroes and he got back in the gym. Obviously the family and his wife suffers deeply from this loss. How is she since the verdict . Shes very relieved of the verdict. We havent talk added a lot since then. She sent me a text yesterday saying, amen we got a verdict. When you think back on him and his life what is it and all the attention that has been drawn, a because of the life b, because of the funeral, c, because of the all the attention from the movie . Any of this not on target . Any of this not true . Any of this you wish to correct . As far as being untrue i toy think theres anything untrue. The hype, he hated the hooich. Hated it. Haited it. And rngs ewe knowthe trial was dugged the american sniper trial. Chris would be upset about that. It was not about the american sniper. It was about chris kyle and chad littlefield. Everybody forgets chad and who he was. He wasnt a veteran but he had the heart and soul as a and would help as many as possible. If you were the write the epitaph for your brother, what would you say . I dont think we have enough time, but he was larger than life. He was a great father rngs a great brother, and great son to my parents. My kids love him. They still talk about him to this day, you know.
