Is there a danger of society of people changing their behavior over time because of terrorism . Yeah, i think it changes the structure of our country. Changes the structure of our government. I think fear moves people to become much more polarized in their viewpoints. And i think that fear motivates people to, you know, go to further lengths to feel safe. In small doses, fear can be a lifesaver, prompting us to react to danger. But it can cause stroke and heart attack. The doctor says its important to continue normal routine if possible. But if you find yourself anxious and avoiding things, it may be time to get help. E. Well, a plumber in texas has been anxious to tell anyone who will listen that he is not selling vehicles to isis. The republican president ial contenders gathered at theva knee shan hotel last night for round five of their president ial debate. It is the final political slugfest of the year and donald trump is front and center. He leads his closest challenger, ted cruz, by 27 points, but trump has issues in iowa where two out of three recent polls show cruz in the lead. All that set the stage for the debate. Heres what some of the candidates had to say. Mr. Trump, as you mentioned in your opening statement, part of your strategy is focus in on the countrys borders. You want to temporarily ban nonamerican muslims from coming to the United States, ban refugees fleeing isis from coming here. Deport 11 Million People and wall off americas southern border. Is the best way to make America Great again to isolate it from much of the rest of the world . We are not talking about isolation. Were talking about security. Were not talking about religion. Were talking about security. Our country is out of control. People are pouring across the southern border. I will build a wall. It will be a great wall. People will not come in unless they come in legally. Drugs will not pour through that wall. As far as other people, like in the migration where theyre going tens of thousands of people having cell phones with isis flags on them, i dont think so, wolf, theyre not coming to this country, and if im president and if obama has brought some to this country, theyre going, theyre leaving. Theyre gone. [ applause ] governor bush, you called mr. Trump unhinged when he proposed banning nonamerican muslims from the United States. Why is that unhinged . Well, first of all, we need to destroy isis in the caliphate. Thats, that should be our objective. The refugee issue will be solved if we destroy isis there, which means we need to have a nofly zone, safe zones there for refugees and build a military force. We need to embed our troops inside the Iraqi Military and arm the kurds. And all of that has to be done in concert with the arab nations. And if were going to ban all muslims, how are we going to get them to be part of a coalition to destry isis. The kurds are muslim. This is not a serious proposal. In fact, it will push the muslim world, the arab world away from us when we need to collaborate to destroy isis. Donald is great at the oneliners, but hes a cos candidate and hed be a chaos president. He would not be the commander in chief we need to keep our country safe. [ applause ] mr. Trump. Jeb doesnt really believe im unhinged. He said that very simply because he has failed in this campaign. Its been a total disaster. Nobody cares, and frankly, im the most solid person up here. I built a tremendous company and all i want to do is make America Great again. I dont want our country to be taken away from us, and thats whats happening. The policies that weve suffered under other president s have been a disaster for our country. We want to make America Great again and jeb in all fairness doesnt believe that. Look, he mentioned me, i can talk. This is the problem. Banning all muslims will make it harder for us to do exactly what we need to do, which is to destroy isis. We need a strategy. We need to get the lawyers off the back of the war fighters. Right now under president obama weve created this standard that is so high that its impossible to be successful in fighting isis. We need to engage with the arab world to make this happen. It is not a serious proposal to say to the people that youre asking for their support that they cant even come to the country to even engage in a dialog with us . Thats not a serious proposal. We need a serious leader to deal with this, and i believe im that guy. Senator rubio. Im going to senator rubio and get his thoughts. You have said banning muslims is unconstitutional, but according to a recent abc news poll, a majority of republicans support mr. Trumps idea. Why are they wrong . I understand why they feel that way, because this president hasnt kept us safe. The problem is we had an attack in San Bernardino, and we were paying attention to the most important issue since 9 11. But this is whats important to do. We must deal frontally with this. This is the most sophisticated terror group that has ever threatened the world or the United States of america. They are actively recruiting americans. The attacker in San Bernardino was an american citizen, a health inspector, a newborn child and left all that behind to kill 14 people. We also understand this is a group thats growing in its governance of territory. Its not just iraq and syria, they are now pry dominant in libya, afghanistan, now in yemen. They have jordan in their sights. This group needs to be confronted with serious proposals, and this is a significant threat we face and the president has left us unsafe. He spoke to the American People, i wish he hadnt spoken at all. He said were going to keep doing what were doing now. And what were doing now is not working. [ applause ] hugh hewitt, you have a question . Senator cruz, you say you disagree with mr. Truchlts policy. I dont want a cage match. Youve tweeted you dont want a cage match, but republican primary voters deserve to know, with the specificity youve delivered in Supreme Court arguments how you disagree. Everyone has understood why he has suggested what he has. We have a president engaged in double speak, where he doesnt call radical islamic terrorism by its name. Indeed, he gives a speech after the San Bernardino attack where his approach is to try to go after the Constitutional Rights of lawabiding citizens rather than to ep coo keep us safe. And even worse, president obama and Hillary Clinton are proposing of bringing tens of thousands of refugees to this country when the head of the fbi has told congress they cannot vet those refugees. I understand why donald trump made that proposal. Ive introduced legislation that i believe is more focussed at the actual threat which is radical islamic terrorism. And what my legislation would do is suspend all refugees from three years from countries where isis or al qaeda controls substantial territory. So youre saying because hes too broad and youre having him narrowed the focus. Why do you disagree with him . Im reminded of what fdrs grant father said. He said all horse thieves are democrats. But not all democrats are horse thieves. [ laughter ] in this instance, there are millions of peaceful muslims across the world in countries like india, where there is not the problems we are seeing in nations that are controlled, have territory controlled by al qaeda or isis. And we should direct at this problem, focus on the problem and defeat radical islam eck terrorism. It ales not a war on a faith. Its a war on a theocratic ideology that seeks to murder us. The creator of star wars, george lucas has been making movies for more than 40 years. His impact on cinema earned him a Kennedy Center honor. He talked about life, family, and what it means to be a film director. A director is just somebody whos got a fetish with making the world the way he wants it to be. Sort of narcissistic. Reporter thats you . All directors. All directors are vaguely like emperors. Which is i want to build the society to be, to reflect me and what i want. But a director can do it with a lot less money and just say im going to create a world where people can fly. Reporter george lucas didnt create a new society. He constructed an entire galaxy. On its surface, the star wars series is a scifi space oddity with odd creatures and epic space battles. But its genius lies in the simple story beneath all of that. Timeless elements like family. I am your father. Reporter is the dark side stronger . No. No. Reporter and the fight between good and evil. I felt a great disturbance in the force. Reporter as its creator, lucas has been called one of the great innovators in film history. But in his heart, he considers himself a storyteller. Didnt you in the beginning intend to make three movies when you started and then you decided to only take one part of that life story . Yeah, i took the first act. But then the first act didnt really work. So i said okay. What im going to have to do is take the ending of the third film and put it on the first film. What you do, youve got a bunch of stuff sitting on your desk as youre creating. Let me take that and stick that in there. I wasnt worried about the sequels when i was making it. Because i have to make this the best film. Then when i moved on to the other ones, i said gee, ben kenobis dead, what do i do . And then the death star. But part of it was simply when i got down to some of the other movies, i was able to create an environment and a world that wasnt possible when i started the first one. So, to me, getting to do a sword fight with yoda, which id always wanted to do, but i couldnt do it, because he was a muppet. Reporter lucas became a pioneer in the world of special effects. His work forever changed the way films are made. And he changed how they sound, too. One, two, three oclock reporter in his 1973 film american graffiti, he opted out of a traditional composer. He narrated the entire story with popular songs. Thats the clearest end point for a teenager is the music. Half of what a teenager is, is music. The other half is trouble or raging hormones or whatever you want to describe it. But at the same time, thats what the movies about. Reporter cars and music and raging hormones. Yeah. I should have called it that. You finally figured it out. Studio wanted to call it another slow night in modesto. But cars, music and raging hormones, it could have been a hit. Lets go surfing now reporter it was one of the most commercially successful fi olmsf its time. Some enchanted evening reporter before he was 40, he went on to make the first three star wars and raiders of the lost ark. And then he walked away. I mean, i gave up directing in order to become a dad. For 15 years. I just ran a company and was an innovator, but it was not doing what i really like to do, which is actually make movies. Reporter because you wanted to be a dad. Because, yeah. And i never was onef th oe things that you dont expect it to happen. But once i was a dad, it was like a bolt of lightning struck me. Reporter lucas adopted his first daughter with his wife marsha in 14981. After they divorced he adopted two more and became a single dad. Then in 2013 he married mellody hobs hobs hobson. The thing that is a miracle is that were exactly the same. Reporter together they have a 2yearold daughter. Its a miracle. It wasnt supposed to happen but it did. Reporter here george is able to concentrate on being a father. Three years ago, he sold his company, lucas films to disney for 4 billion. Who are you . No one. Reporter let me just talk about the upcoming star wars, the force awakens. How do you feel about it . Well, its, you know, i made the decision to sell the company. Star wars. I made that decision, because i looked at the future. I looked at the thought that i was going to have a baby, that i was married, and i looked at the fact that i wanted to build a museum, and i looked at the fact that i wanted to make experimental films. So my life was going on a different track, so that started that ball rolling. So, in the end, when i sold it, they hired jj to come in. Reporter so are you at peace with this in. Yeah. Reporter as much as you can be . Yeah, no, i was, i said, look, im fine. Fortunately, im old enough to have been through all this stuff before. And im sure it will do magnificent business. Im sure theyll do a great job. It will be different from what i would have done. Reporter everything hes done has earned him a prestigious Kennedy Center honor. George lucas, a path finder and pioneer. Reporter at the awards, his good friend Steven Spielberg explained it best. He changed movies absolutely forever. Officials in los angeles are defending their decision to abruptly close the entire School System in response to a proper threat that turned out to be a hoax. New york city received a similar email threat, but unlike los angeles kept its schools open. Police commissioner bill bratton said the threat was a hoax. The language in the email would lead us to believe this was not a jihadist initiative. For example, that allah was not spelled with a capital a. Reporter Los Angeles Police chief charlie beck defended l. A. s decision to close the schools. I think its irresponsible to based on facts that have yet to be determined to criticize that decision at this point. All of us make tough choices. All of us have the same goal in mind. When jeb comes out and talks about the border, and i saw it, and i was witness to it, and so was everyone else, and i was standing there, they come across as an act of love, hes saying the same thing right now with radical islam, and we cant have that in our country. It just wont work. We need strength. Well, Hillary Clintons mind was concentrated on terrorism as well today. She laid out her strategy for fighting isis and protecting the homeland. Nancy corps des has that. Reporter clinton argued the u. S. Should start scrutinizing the social media postings of visa applicants. Any one who has traveled in the last five years to a country facing Serious Problems with terrorism and foreign fighters should have to go through a full visa investigation, no matter where theyre from. Reporter clinton unveiled her proposals in minneapolis, because its home to the largest small somali community. A quarter of those who tried to join isis from america came from minnesota. This city councilman is part of a new task force trying to counter extremist propaganda. How hard is it to pin point whos being radicalized . Theyre usually young, born here, grew up here or came here as toddlers. Theyre unemployed. Reporter today clinton called out republicans like donald trump and ted cruz who she accused of quote, shallow slowiganeerin sloganeering. Promising to carpet bomb until the desert glows doesnt make you sound strong. It makes you sound like youre in over your head. Reporter but republicans claim the former secretary of state didnt do enough to prevent the rise of isis. Shes killed hundreds of thousands of people with her stupidi stupidity. Reporter the Clinton Campaign said that comment didnt deserve a response and tonight they say the country cant give in to demagoguery, a clear reference to trump and his proposal to ban muslims from the u. S. Nancy, thank you. The president s been telling us not to little fear control our lives. Our dr. John lapook talked about the effects of fear. One of the things i think is different about this, you know, this threat is that, again, its ongoing. People sort of cant know when and where or how its going to happen. Its this thing that never ends, and its ubiquitous. Its everywhere. How does that affect their lives . They tend to avoid different aspects of their lives. They fly less, ride on Public Transportation less, go into public settings less. Theres research shown that they have a tendency to engage people from different cultural backgrounds less. They even consume media less, ironically. What have you learned over the last ten years of studying this that might surprise people . How potent fear can be in terms of altering peoples lives and the impact that it can have in different aspects of life. Whether its making decisions about a president , whether its supporting different policies that are important socially or even down to sort of, you know, how people live their every day lives. Is there a danger to society of people incrementally changing their behavior over time because of terrorism . Yeah, i think it changes the structure of our country. It changes the structure of our government. Fear can maybe even change things in ways that werent consistent with how the country was founded originally. As a psychologist, is there some insight into that . I think fear moves people to become much more polarized in their viewpoints, and i think that fear motivates people to, you know, go to further lengths to feel safe. In small doses, fear can be a lifesaver, prompting us to react to danger. But in large doses it can cause fatigue, depression and even stroke. He says its important to continue normal routine, but if fear starts taking over and you avoid things it might be time to get professional help. Well, a plumber in texas has certainly been anxious to tell anyone who will listen that he is not selling vehicles to isis. Anna warner has that story. It was just such a shock when it happened. You know, i didnt know what to say. This is the cbs overnight news. Welcome to the overnight news. The republican president ial contenders gathered the Venetian Hotel in las vegas last night for round five of their president ial debate. It is the final political slugfest of the year, and donald trump remains front and center. A Monmouth University poll shows 40 of Republican Voters support trump. He leads ted cruz by 27 points, but trump has issues in iowa where two out of three recent polls show cruz in the lead. All that sets the stalg for the debate. Heres what some of the candidates had to say. Mr. Trump, as you mentioned in your opening statement, part of your strategy is to focus in on americas borders, to keep the country safe, you say you want to temporarily ban nonamerican muslims from coming to the United States, ban refugees fleeing isis from coming here, deport 11 Million People and wall off americas southern border. Is the best way to make America Great again to isolate it from much of the rest of the world . We are not talking about isolation. We are talking about security. We are not talking about religion. Were talking about security. Our country is out of control. People are pouring across the southern border. I will build a wall. It will be a great wall. People will not come in unless they come in legally. Drugs will not pour through that wall. As far as other people, like in the migration, where theyre going tens of thousands of people having cell phones with isis flags on them, i dont think so, wolf, theyre not coming to this country, and if im president , and if obama has brought some to this country, they are leaving. They are going. Theyre gone. [ applause ] governor bush, you called mr. Trump unhinged when he proposed banning nonamerican muslims from the United States. Why is that unhinged . Well, first of all, we need to destroy isis in the caliphate. Thats, that should be our objective. The refugee issue will be solved if we destroy isis there, which means we need to have a nofly zone. Safe zones there for refugees and to build a military force. We need to embed our forces, our troops inside the Iraqi Military. We need to arm directly the kurds, and all of that has to be done in concert with arab nations. If were going to mban muslims, how are we going to coordinate it. Theyre muslim. It will push the aesh world eye way fr away from us when we need to coordinate to destroy isis. Donald is great at the oneliners, but hes a chaos candidate. And hed be a chaos president. He would not be the commander in chief we need to keep our country safe. Mr. Trump . [ applause ] jeb doesnt really believe im unhinged. He said that very simply because he has failed in this campaign. Its been a total disaster. Nobody cares, and frankly, im the most solid person up here. Ive built a tremendous company and all i want to do is make America Great again. I dont want our country to be taken away from us, and thats ha whats happening. The policies that weve suffered under other president s have been a disaster for our country. And jeb in all fairness doesnt believe that. He mentioned me. I can talk, this is the problem. Banning all muslims will make it harder for us to do exactly what we need to do, which is to destroy isis. 2003 need a strategy, to get the lawyers off the back of the war fighters. Right now under president obama weve created this standard that is so high that its impossible to be successful in fighting isis. We need to engage with the arab world to make it happen. It is not a serious proposal to say to the people that youre asking for their support that they cant even come to the country to even engage in a dialog with us . Thats not a serious proposal. We need a serious leader to deal with that, and i believe im that guy. Im going to senator rubio. You have said banning muslims is unconstitutional, but according to a recent abc News Washington post poll, a majority of republicans support mr. Trumps idea. Why are they wrong . I understand why they teal that way, because this president hasnt kept us safe. We had an attack in San Bernardino and were paying attention to the most important issue since 9 11. This is whats important to do. We must deal frontally with this threat of radical islamists. This is the most sophisticated terror group that has ever threatened the world or the United States of america. They are recruiting americans. The attacker in San Bernardino was an american, he had a newborn child and left that behind to kill 14 people. We understand its growing in governance and territory. They are predominant in libya, beginning to pop up in afghanistan. Theyre increasingly involved in yemen, jordan in their sights. This group needs to be confronted with serious proposals, and this is a very significant threat we face and the president has left us unsafe. He spoke to the American People to reassure us, i wish he hadnt spoken at all. He made things worse. What he basically said was were going to keep doing what were doing now. And what were doing now is not working. [ applause ] hugh hewitt, you have a question . Senator cruz, youve said you disagree with mr. Trumps policy. I dont want a cage match. Youve tweeted you dont want a cage match. But republican primary voters deserve to know with the specificity youve delivered in your Supreme Court arguments, will you spell that out. Everyone understands why hes suggested what hes. Were engaged with a president whos involved with double speak where he doesnt call radical islamic terrorism by its name and gives a speech after the San Bernardino attack where his approach is to try to go after the Constitutional Rights of lawabiding citizens rather than to keep us safe. And even worse, president obama and Hillary Clinton are proposing of bringing tens of,000 of Syrian Refugees to this country when the head of the fbi has told congress they cannot vet those refugees. I understand why donald made that proposal. I introduced legislation in the senate that i believe is more focussed at the actual threat, which is radical islamic terrorism. And what my legislation would do is suspend all refugees for three years from countries where isis or al qaeda controls substantial territory. So youre saying you disagree because hes too broad and youre having a narrower focus . Why do you disagree with him . I am reminded of what fdrs grandfather said. He said all democrats are horse thieves, but not all democrats are horse thieves. There are people in india where there are not the problems we are seeing in nations controlled, have territory controlled by al qaeda or isis. And we should direct at the problem, focus on the problem and defeat radical islamic terrorism. It ales not a wara on faith. Each operator will be given a Registration Number which must be displayed on every drone owned. While the Drone Industry has been largely supportive of the effort, the academy of model arrai aeronautics says its cumbersome for their members. The creator of star wars, george lucas, has been making movies for more than 40 years. His impact on cinema earned him one of this years Kennedy Center honors. We joined him at his ranch in california where he talked about life and what it means to be a film director. A film director is someone who has a gfetish of making the world the way you want it. All directors are vaguely like emperors. Which is i want to build the society to reflect me and what i want. But the director can do it with a lot less mono adey and say i going to create a world in which people can fly. Reporter george lucas didnt crow its a new society. He constructed an entire glaex. On its surface, the star wars series is a scifi space odyssey with odd creatures and epic space battles. But its genius lies in the simple storstorey beneath all o that. Timeless elements like family. And the fight between good and evil. I felt a great disturbance in the force. Reporter as its crow ita cr lucas has been called one of the greatest film makers in history. But in his heart considers himself a story taker. Didnt you decide to make three movies and then decide to take one part of that life story . I took the first act, but then the first act didnt really work. So i said okay, what im going to have to do is take the ending of the third film and put it on the first film. You know, what you do, you have a bunch of stuff on your desk, let me take that and stick that in there. So i wasnt worried that much about the sequels. I was worried about making this the best film. Then when i moved on to the others, i thought, gee, ben kenobis now dead, i killed him. Phow am i going to fix that. And what am i going to do about the fact that i already blew the death star up . Part of it was simply when i got down to some of the other movies, i was able to create an environment and world that wasnt possible when i started the first one. So to me, getting yoda to do a sword fight, i couldnt ever do it because he was a muppet. Reporter lucas became a pioneer in the world of special effects. His work forever changed the way films are made. And he changed the way they sound too. One, two, three oclock reporter in his 1973 hit american graffiti, lucas opted out of a traditional composer. He narrated the entire story with popular songs. 16 candles thats the clearest end point for a teenager is the music. Half of what a teenager is, is music. And the other half is trouble or raging hormones, or however you want to describe it. But at the same time, thats what the movie is about. Cars and music and raging hormones . Yeah. I should have called it that. Cars and music and raging hormones. You finally figured it out. The studio wanted to call it another slow night in modesto. But cars, music and hormones could have been a hit. Lets go surfing now reporter the lowbudget film was one of the most commercially successful films of its time. Some enchanted evening reporter before he was 40, lucas went on to make the first three star wars and indiana jones, raiders of the lost ark. And then he walked away. I mine, i gave up directing in order to become a dad. You know, for 15 years. I just ran a company and was an innovator. But it was not doing what i really liked to do, which was actually make movies. Reporter because you wanted to be a dad. Because, yeah. I, and i never was one of those things where you dont expect it to happen. But once i was a dad, it was like a bolt of lightning struck me. Reporter lucas adopted his first daughter with his wife marsha in 1981. After they divorced he adopted two more children and raised them as a single dad. Everyone says the following things. Theyre so very different. Then in 2013 he married mellody hobson, an investment executive and cbs news contributor. The thing thats a miracle is were exactly the same. Reporter together they have a 2 year old dater. Its a miracle. It shuchbts have happened but somehow it did. Reporter here in ranch near San Francisco hes able to concentrate on being a father. He sold his business to disney for 4 billion. Let me just talk about the upcoming star wars, the force awakens. How do you feel about it . Well, its, you know, i made the decision to sell the compancompany i made the decision, i looked at the fact that i was married, i had a baby, i wanted to build a museum, and i looked at the fact that i wanted to make experimental films. So my life was going on a different track. So that started that ball rolling. So, in the end, when i sold it, they hired jj to come in. Reporter so are you at peace with this . Yeah. Reporter as much as you can be . Yeah, i said look, im fine. Fortunately, im old enough to have been through all this stuff before. And im sure it will do magnificent business, im sure theyll do a great job. You know, it will be different from what i would have done. Reporter everything hes done has earned him an administrati prestigious Kennedy Center honor. At the awards, his good friend Steven Spielberg explained it best. George lucass star wars changed movies absolutely forever. He makes three movies every year, and i say steven, when are you going to row tiretire . Im not going to retire. My ultimate desire is to die on the set. I said my ambition is to die in bid watching one of your movies. Reporter but that doesnt mean hes slowing down anytime soon.
