Watch. First alert meteorologist erica grow has the latest on our yellow alert. Bruce, the severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 9 00. You can see the line of thunderstorms that is moving toward the beltway on doppler 9000. Severe thunderstorms already rolled through the hagerstown area. Look at how the lightning strikes have really diminished, though, in the past hour. We have practically no lightning strikes anymore. Thats a good indication that that particular thunderstorm cell is losing its energy. I think thats the reason also that the Severe Thunderstorm Warning was not extended for that particular thunderstorm cell. Everything is moving at about 20 to 25 miles per hour. Even though we dont have much in the way of lightning anymore, we still have very heavy rain and the heaviest downpours are just starting to make their way into the city of frederick. Were going to be looking for some very heavy rain through the next half hour to minutes, as this heaviest cell moves through. Right along route 340 is going to be rough. 15 through leesburg is also going to be very challenging. We still have this Severe Thunderstorm Warning were continuing to track for you, centered over upperville, moving to the east at 20 miles per hour. Front royal, the worst of it is over for you, but this is moving into northern folkier county and southern lowden county. Most of this is not going to be as intense as would merit a Severe Thunderstorm Warning. You might get some hail. You might have some strong winds, but 60 mileanhour winds, not very likely. Quartersized hail, thats also criteria for severe thunderstorms. It doesnt look like youll see that either. However, in front of this storm cell, we have another one that is strengthening. I would not be surprised to see this storm cell, which is over river road. You can see it near poolsville here. I wouldnt be surprised to see this one become a severe thunderstorm within the next 10, 15 minutes. Ill continue to track that one for you as well, and if a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued, ill be sure to let you know, not only here on the air, but also on facebook and twitter. Were always updating those services for you. So 9 future cast shows the line of thunderstorms. You can see the reds and oranges developing, but as is typical with this time of year, when the sun goes down, you lose the source of energy and the thunderstorms start to fizzle out. Here we are at 8 00, right around sunset. Still very hot in downtown dc. 88 degrees. But were just looking at rain, not as much in the way of thunderstorm activity. Where you see reds and oranges and yellows, there is the potential for thunderstorms. Gaithersburg, maybe a thunderstorm rolling through there. Definitely still looking at the potential for thunderstorms in baltimore and into anne arundel county, but the activity will start to slide to the south and east in the overnight hours. 11 00, still raining in Southern Maryland, but most of us are just looking at clouds and a few showers still lingering. The potomac highlands, another shower could pop through during the overnight. But as we head into sunday morning, well clear things out. Maybe a lingering showers, but most of us just a cloudy morning. Then well see temperatures dropping heading into the afternoon. Today, we got well into the 90s. Tomorrow, some of us wont get out of the 70s. Can you believe it . This beautiful weather is moving in and well see sunshine and low humidity to boot. Big business for maryland casinos. Maryland lottery and Gaming Control Agency says the states five casinos brought in their highest onemonth totals since gaming was legalized in the state. Maryland live casino in hanover was the highest earner, taking in 57 million last month alone. Newly opened horseshoe casino in baltimore brought in 5. 7 million, and that was in only six days of operation last month. Close to a thousand people received free dental care this weekend at the university of maryland in college park. More than 800 dentists, hi hygienists set up shop at the auditorium on saturday. Maria got an email from a friend that promised to pay her 400 a month to be an ad on wheels. I have a small business, so im always looking for clients and i said, well, anything i could get money for the business. Reporter she was revved up when she received an email with instructions on how to get the cash. 1650, to be exact. It said that i am to deposit a check and only 400 and send remaining money to a third party in florida. Reporter but when that Priority Mail express envelope arrived . I was expecting a letter from monster. And this is what i got. Reporter along with this check from the International College of pros they done tests with an address in san diego, and in Silver Spring. I said, oh no. I got worried and called police. Reporter the ftc has been giving the wrap on rap scams, sort of a new twist on an old trip. If you get one of these, dont cash the check, dont send any money to a third party. Just throw it away. It could have been a disaster. Reporter luckily, this former credit union specialist followed her gut, called the police and fbi, and then reached out to our call for action team. I got really, really worried. I got angry. Reporter its a warning for everyone about a monster scheme that could steal your money. Leslie foster, wusa 9. Monster energy says its aware of the scam and that it does not have a car wrap or a paytodrive program. They are cooperating with Police Across the country who are investigating this matter. And the International College of prosthodontists in california tells us they have no part in this scheme and have no idea why their organization is being used to fund the checks to carry out the scam. We have been tracking those thunderstorms through the afternoon hours. Hagerstown was the first one to get hit. You had a Severe Thunderstorm Warning at about 2 00 and then the rest of the thunderstorms started to roll on in as we headed into the afternoon. Here we are now in the early evening hours, and there is a pretty strong thunderstorm cell heading towards Silver Spring. Derek, heading towards your jazz festival, it does look like that thunderstorm could produce some small hail, maybe some damaging winds. At this moment, it is not a severe thunderstorm, but there is another cell that were going to have to track for you in montgomery and fairfax counties that could head your way. So Silver Spring, yeah, youre under the gun. In the northern parts of the district, youre also under the gun with that thunderstorm heading your way. Right now at reagan national, we could use relief from the heat. Its 91 degrees. The dewpoint is 70. Thats one of the things that makes us feel so nasty. Relative humidity is 49 . That is misleading. It sounds like a low number, but the dewpoint itself is really what makes that feel so oppressive out there, makes it feel so sticky out there. The dewpoint, when its 70 or higher, is oppressive humidity. It means your body is not capable of cooling off through its normal means, perspiration. It doesnt work when you have very high humidity levels. So well see more storms overnight tonight in association with that cold front thats rolling through. Behind that cold front, finally well see beautiful changes moving in. Clearing skies on sunday morning, starting out with the clouds, but then sunshine moves in in the afternoon. And the afternoon is going to be fantastic. A huge change from what we have out there right now. Its going to be cooler and less humid and its going to be pleasant to be outdoors. Right now, still 88 in la plata, 90 in fredericksburg. Look at the cooldown behind us. Storm system, 72 in martinsburg and winchester. 71 in hagerstown. Behind the line of storms, temperatures rebound. Its 81 in cumberland. We need the cold front to continue to move through, to bring us that change that were looking for. Right now, it still feels so nasty out there, feels like its in the upper 90s. We need that cooldown to move in. The feelslike temperature will get better once the cold front arrives. Right now, it is moving through pittsburgh and the severe thunderstorms and strong, heavy rain is continuing to slide toward us. You can see that on satellite and radar. The 9 future cast is going to show us when that cooler and drier air arrives exactly. So we have that strong line of thunderstorms. It will press through the metro area. By the time youre tuning in for wusa 9 at 11 00, its moving into Southern Maryland and into the delmarva. One more line of showers, probably not thunderstorms, also will push through overnight tonight. By the time youre waking up sunday morning, just clouds in place for most of us, maybe a spotty shower hanging on in Southern Maryland. But the northerly winds start to move in, bringing us cooler and drier air. By the afternoon, the clouds will break and well see beautiful sunshine and low humidity. Its going to be a fantastic afternoon. On monday, a storm system to our south and east could spring some showers into our area, possibly affecting the evening commute. I dont think thats very likely, which is why i still have a green alert in effect on monday. Tuesday is looking like a pretty decent day as well. One more nasty night to get through. Showers and a storm overnight tonight. 62 to 68. So not as warm as it has been. Monday morning, or sunday morning, i should say, it is going to be cooler and more comfortable with temperatures in the 60s and 70s. By the afternoon, what a wonderful change for us. Partly sunny, 78 to 84 for your afternoon highs. Winds out of the northeast at 5 to 15 miles per hour. Thats why things are going to improve out there. But on monday with the coastal system, we could get showers. It doesnt look like its going to be a big deal. Thats why we still have the green alert. Tomorrows wonderful with a high of 82. Then monday, high of only 80 degrees because of that easterly flow and the chance for a shower. Maybe an isolated shower holding on on tuesday with a high of 84 degrees. Notice in the first alert seven day forecast, all our temperatures remain in the 80s, not the 90s. That oppressive heat wave is finally, thankfully, mercifully, over.
