Despite the explosion of flu cases, it is not too late to get vaccinated. Especially since the flu often stays strong all the way through february. While the centers for Disease Control says most states are experiencing widespread flu cases, thats not a same as the epidemic. Delia goncalves joins us to explain. Reporter thats a severe form and widespread really wide. Reporter yes. Hugely widespread. Illnesses, and youve had several illnesses over the last few weeks. Reporter oh my gosh, an epidemic inside of my home. You know doctors are really shying away from using the word epidemic. They dont want to cause hysteria and panic because at this point were already seeing a lot of folks rushing to their doctors and to the clinics and ers and getting their vaccines. And so we do want to remind folks that this is very serious. But you know you shouldnt you know panic at this point. According to the centers for Disease Control, 40 states, 44 rather are reporting widespread infection. This years flu even led to the death of 20 children nationwide. The flu as we know has hit very hard and extremely early doctors say the strain the most severe form of the illness and it led to hundreds of hospitalizations nationwide. And some very busy ers. Its on a trajectory relatively early of compared to other seasonal flus. You dont usually see it begin to have that uptick until mid to late january then it peaks january, february and sometimes into march. Reporter so the doctor tells us heres a good news the vaccine available now does cover this particular strain of the flu but the vaccines not magic bullets. Its not going to prevent you from getting sick. At 5 30 some fly issues that some supply issues that some places are having so far with the vaccine. Thanks delia. While state Health Departments in the area say there should be enough vaccine on hand the spike in demand means you may not be able to walk into every pharmacy to get a shot. Very important to let folks know because there have been some contradictory reports that there were some shortages. However, there are plenty of vaccines to go around nationwide. Simply there were a couple of shipment delays because so many folks are rushing to pharmacies to get their flu shots. So basically, these stores were blowing through their inventory before you could get there. So word of advice . Call ahead before you head to the pharmacy. Med immune a manufacturer of flu mist produced 12 million doses. There were temporary delays in new shipments of tamiflu but stores were told are now restilling the stock of the oral refilling their stock of the oral vaccine. Doctors say this strain of h 3 n 2 is the most severe but its still covered by this inoculation. However, remember the flu shot is only 90 effective. So you might get vaccinated and still get the flu. And you hear many people that say that. Well, i got vaccinated and i actually got the flu. But if you look at the effect of the vaccine it probably greatly dampened the illness and the severity of the illness. Reporter so weve heard that a lot over the years people say well, i got the flu vaccine and i got sick a week later. So i dont get the flu vaccine and that could lead to why 50 of americans only get inoculated and so doctors are urging folks you may still get sick. But you wont get a severe case of the flu so its important to head out and get that flu shot vaccines are Still Available and theres still plenty of time to prevent this illness. Back to you. Now this morning Defense Attorneys are going to ask a judge to reconsider the case of yonathan melaku. Hes the 25yearold former marine who has pleaded guilty to shooting at the pentagon and other buildings in Northern Virginia. No one was hurt in these shootings but his legal team says that after he was sentenced to 25 years in prison, government doctors diagnosed him with a mental illness. And they want a judge to reconsider the sentence. The outgoing secretary of defense is sounding a warning about the congressional budget fights. Leon panetta says the pentagon is making preparations in case automatic budget cuts take effect. The cuts were delayed two months by the fiscal cliff deal reached earlier this month. But lawmakers are also expected to butt heads over raising the debt ceiling. Which raises the possibility of a government shutdown. This fiscal uncertainty has become a very serious threat to our national security. We actually are growing, weve expanded. Weve continued to go through these months. But if theres a shutdown, that would be an abrupt stop. Steve charles cofounded contractor the group and he says there would be layoffs if the government isnt in a position to reup contracts or award new ones in the next few months. Other Defense Companies instituted hiring freezes while they wait to see what happens. Its is 5 35. Time for another your money report now. And Jessica Doyle is back with a look at the local economic future. Thats right. Thats right. Well remember when it was easy to find a job and you could sell your house with relative ease . The hard part was actually bidding on a new house. It hasnt been like in a really long time. Weve gotten used to the new normal economy thats slowly mugging along and really dont expect the new normal to go away anytime soon. A new forecast is out from the centers for regional analysis at George Mason University and it predicts the Washington Area economy has two more tough years ahead. Very little improvement in Economic Growth expected this year and when it does start to pick up speed next year, the economy wont be the same one we used to have. The center predicts the local economy is growing somewhat less dependent on federal government and private hiring. Its starting the take the lead here. Now taking a look at the job numbers the region was rather is expected to lose 22,000 federal jobs by 2017. A lot of that is due to the spending cuts were expecting out of congress but in a ways this good news because economists were originally predicting 450,000 jobs to be lost. At the same time, the washington region will still have a net gain of 281,000 new jobs by 2017. Most of those are coming in the private sector and not related to the federal government. And a rebound in the housing sector will lead part of the way. The center sees about 55,000 new construction jobs being added by 2017. This is not a terrible economic outlook. We have some good news thrown in here but set your sights on 2015 before the local economy will really start firing up based on these forecasts. So much of that has to do with the debt ceiling and the debates weve seen in congress. Slow growth. Our hands almost. Really when you think of it that way. Very much. Still ahead a couple of d. C.
