It was a wild scene, a shootout between an Armed Robbery suspect and police in the u street area overnight. When it was done, police found that suspect shot to death, but they say it is likely the suspect killed himself. Debra alfarone joins us live from where the man was found shot dead at Caroline Street and 15th street in northwest. How do police know all this . This is a bustling U Street Corridor and even on a really cold night like last night there are lots of people around here, people we spoke to who live on this very street saying theyre actually surprised more people werent hurt. It was just before midnight thursday when police say a man with a gun tried to rob someone on riggs place a few blocks off the bustling U Street Corridor. About 10 minutes later we had the report of a second Armed Robbery in the 1400 block of swan street northwest. Reporter the assistant chief says they think it was the same suspect. An officer tried to stop him. The suspect ran. There was an exchange of gunfire. Reporter bullets flying on a busy street. The crime scene then stretched a few blocks to Caroline Street. A traffic stop im thinking, stolen car, whatever, Something Like that. I had no idea there was a dead body involved. The preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect turned the weapon on himself and he is dead. Reporter thats the timeline of events. We had questions. What is the preliminary information . Its information that we have from witnesses. Reporter where was the gunfire exchanged because were talking about a couple of blocks . That kind of detail we dont have right now. As you know, we have investigators up there still talking to eyewitnesses. Reporter was the suspect hit by Police Bullets . We wont know that until an autopsy is performed. He lives smack in the middle of the crime scene. Im just shocked about the whole incident as a whole. So thats shocking and im just glad that nobody else was injured or killed. Reporter police say theres a strong possibility that this robbery was tied to other recent robberies in this area. Police havent idd that suspect yet and say if you were in this area, u street, 15th street, carroll line, riggs, swan, any of those streets last night and saw any of this, theyd certainly like to hear from you. Weve got new surveillance pictures in another robbery. Two masked men accused of holding up a mcdonalds on Jefferson Davis highway in crystal city. Arlington police say they stormed that restaurant at about 4 40. They say the crooks acted as a lookout at the front door while a gunman jumped over the counter and demanded the cash from the safe. There were just a handful of employees at this time and just one customer. The customer who didnt want to show her face called 911 and spoke with us about the whole ordeal. I tried to remember what they had on so i could give a description. I just tried to sit there and just watch what was going on. It was scary. And heres who police are looking for. Two black males, one about 5 3, 125 pounds, the other about 5 8, 190 pounds. Luckily no one was hurt. Lots of new revelations today in that deadly smoke crisis in the metro tunnel. Newly released 911 calls show confusion and delay and weve just learned a smoke alarm was sounded before the train even left the station. Bruce leshan was at a congressional hearing today and joins us live from metro. Reporter yeah, one of the witnesses actually started crying as he recounted trying to save carol glover as she suffocated in that smoke filled train. Reporter Jonathan Rogers voice broke as he recounted the terror of being trapped underground while his fellow metro passengers collapse around him. Operators were still confused when someone else called. Are you still in d. C. . Were outside Lenfant Plaza in the tunnel. How is it possible after 14 years and hundreds of millions . I assure you, mr. Mills, its in the hundreds. Reporter we also have just learned from the ntsb that there was a smoke alarm sounding right next to the arcing wires in the tunnel, sounding long minutes before the train even left the station and entered the tunnel and metros control center allowed the train to head into the smoke with hundreds of passengers on board. To what extent are those alarms apparent in the control center and how do they react when they see a smoke alarm in front of a train . Reporter metros board chair is calling for an outside audit of metros control center. I think it will deserve an outside look to give us the advice about what we have. Reporter the ntsb is also investigating whether it took the citys 911 call center far too long to turn around the calls for help. We can only respond once we get the notification, which we did. Reporter now this issue of the smoke alarm could be really important. It should have been sounding out at metros control center in landover. So did someone fail to notice or fail to respond . Still ahead a car slams into the side of a local giant grocery store. Plus a missing child from michigan may be somewhere in maryland. Her mothers plea coming up. Reporter and urgent bridge inspections underway this afternoon and tonight in maryland after an accident at 1 bridge tuesday and the crumbling concrete i found at another bridge after that. Im scott broom in maryla were following up now on what highway bridge inspectors in maryland have been up to today. They were ordered to make safety checks on at least 27 structurally deficient bridges after a chunk of concrete fell from a beltway bridge and hit a car tuesday and after our reporter scott broom found more problems elsewhere. Scott joins us now live from arbutus, maryland, after shadowing an inspector today. What did that inspector find, scott . Reporter sadly, its probably true you wont be surprised by what i documented this inspector looking at today. It didnt look good and the question is will it result in an accelerated repairs schedule for some of these bridges . Its the 12th bridge the inspector has surveyed in the last 24 hours, part of an urgent review of 28 bridges ordered by marylands transportation secretary after concrete fell from a capital beltway bridge onto a sedan tuesday night and after i found blocks of falling concrete lying just inches from a busy lawn on southbound branch avenue lane on southbound branch avenueto have fallen from the piers and beams from the bridge above. Todays inspection in arbutus, maryland, found more of the same. In this case the blocks of concrete had fallen near where pedestrians might walk. Above the inspector documented what appeared to be more crumbling concrete and repairs that included jacking up this major interstate highway bridge with blocks of wood. Paneling has been put in place to keep chunks of the road above to keep from falling on cars should it come loose. Sadly this is typical for the condition of bridges designated by state officials as structurally deficient. Road salting in Winter Weather can accelerate the crumbling. The agency is concerned about safety as concrete chips fall away, but the spokesman dave buck said after tuesdays incident that does not mean these bridges are on the verge of collapse. The concrete for the most part is superficial and its the outside part and while its a very important part of it and obviously one that when Something Like this happens can affect traffic, its very infrequent. It does not happen often. Reporter the good news so far is that inspectors in this round of urgent inspections have not found anything urgent enough to require an Emergency Repair or road closure. So thats at least partially good news. All of these structurally deficient bridges are in the pipeline for repair, but that pipeline is about 10 years long. Also want to report that maryland has about 3 of its state maintained bridges on that structurally deficient list. Thats actually pretty good compared to a lot of states, but after a tough winter, as you can see, the concrete crumbles and it does occasionally come crashing down. D. C. Police say two people were taken to the hospital after their car crashed into the wall of a giant grocery store. That photo you just saw courtesy of wtop. The crash happened before noon at the giants in the 4300 block of connecticut avenue in northwest. The injuries appear to be nonlife threatening and the accident is under investigation.
