But there is some good news to report this early morning. 300,000 defense employees will be returning to work today. And congress has now voted to give back pay to all 800,000 furloughed federal workers when the government reopens. But republicans now say the government will remain closed and they will not raise a debt limit unless republicans can make changes to the Affordable Care act. The votes are not in the house to pass a clean debt limit and the president is risking default. I would bet there are the votes to pass it. Reporter congress shouldnt be creating selfinflicting wounds. I think congress and should act. We have been hearing a lot about a clean c. R. Clean would mean that there are no Strings Attached and that bill would temporarily fund the government and reopen business as usual. Get all these folks back to work and reopen many of the National Parks and services that are now shutdown. How many votes does the house need to pass that . 218 votes. Now democrats say they have a new strategy to get those votes and to get the house to pass that measure. Ill have details on that new plan, coming up in a half hour. Mike, andrea, back to you. Delia goncalves reporting live from capitol hill. It appears street race asking what led to a crash that sent 11 people to the hospital in brandywine, maryland this weekend. Witnesses say two cars were racing in the northbound lane, they crossed the median and hit several cars on the southbound side. A couple of witnesses whose cars were hit in the crash say a young child was among those injured. One car ended up on its roof, another caught fire. Metro has said Red Line Service should be back to normal at the scene of a deadly accident. Just after midnight yesterday, metro says two of its employees and a contractor were working about 400 feet from the Union Station platform when there was a fire and loud noise. A 40foot section of rail moved and struck them. The contractor, harold ingram, died of his injuries. The two metro workers are recovering. A worker has died after being overcome by fumes. In a statement med star says melvin lewis worked there for 15 years. He was in the mechanical room in the hospitals East Building when he was overcome by the fumes. The building was evacuated for about an hour. Dc fire cleared the people for about an hour and then they sent them back in. Time for the latest your money report of the morning. The s p 500 jumped by 12 points and the nasdaq was better by 34 points. President obama is urging consumers not to give up enrolling for insurance under the new healthcare law. He says sign up problems have been caused by sites overwhelmed by high traffic. Officials are working around the clock to reduce waiting time. And United Technologies is canceling a planned furlough for workers set for begin today. This comes after the department of defense furloughed most of its employees. There is no sign of progress on getting a budget deal done, but some federal workers get to come back to work this week. Delia goncalves joins us with some of the developments, once again on capitol hill. Reporter that is very good news that employees will be heading back to work. Congress did agree on something this weekend. They are now promising to give all furloughed federal workers back way when the government reopens. The bad news is, that doesnt seem to be happening anytime soon, unless, of course, there is a major change of course and democrats may hold a key. With 300,000 defense employees ordered back to work, House Democrats hope to force the gop to vote on a budget bill in order to reopen the government. 200 members of congress have signed a discharge petition. A discharge petition means if a majority of the house signs on, regardless of party affiliation, a clean bill, with no changes to obamacare could go to the house floor. Im talking primarily about ted cruz here who basically was saying if we defunded obamacare he could keep the government open and defund obamacare. 61 of the people in kentucky voted for romney. 70 of the people in kentucky dont like obamacare. Im supposed to fight to make bills less bad or better, if possible. I think it is my job to stand up and provide oversight for legislation. It is reckless. The reality is, there are no good choices, if we run out of Borrowing Capacity and out of cash. It will mean the u. S. For the first time would be not paying its bills because of a political decision. The treasury secretary on face the nation, talking about the risk of default. A disabled vehicle inbound at route 23. This is closer to the beltway northbound on i95. Secretary of state john kerry is defending the weekend capture of an al qaeda member on the fbis most wanted terrorist list. This weekends raid took place in libya. The government there says the United States kidnapped al libby. U. S. Officials say long time al qaeda member abut libby is being questioned. Saturday morning u. S. Commandoss surrounded his car, and carried him away from outside his home in libya. His brother called the capture an act of piracy. It raised National Security concerns and left air travelers baffled. The boy made it through three checkpoints without a boarding pass. Where see how it happened. Reporter a spokesperson at m. S. Pinternational confirms he was screened at this checkpoint by tsa agents thursday morning at 10 30. Once the boy got through this checkpoint we are told by an air force official that he boarded an 11 15 flight to vegas i dont once the plane was in the air, flight attendants became suspicious and contacted vegas police. If you are the tsa, you have to go how did that happen . Situations like this arent unheard of. They happen occasionally, mainly with kids. They attach themselves to a group and to an outsider, likes like instead of a family of three kids, it is a family of four kids.
