Today a new jersey lawmakers joined with Civil Justice groups introduced a new bill that would require an independent investigation any time someone died at the hands of police. Fox 29s Bill Anderson explains why this new law could be an uphill battle to pass. Reporter the recent string of violence and death of Police Officers and civilians has elected officials looking for solutions. Theres concern, today in trenton a bill requiring an independent investigation of all Police Involved deaths was presented. The investigation would not be done by the counsel tie prosecutor because theres concerns amongst some people of the closeness with the local police departments. Reporter several Community Groups stood in support of new Jersey Senate president Steve Sweeney in support of this bill that they believe will allow communities the piece of mind of knowing that investigations are fair and unbiased. Our Community Needs this law. This special prosecutor that reassures them that each investigation will be handled with fairness, with care and with impartiality. Similar bills in the past have been criticized by the Law Enforcement community. Senator sweeney today wanted to make it clear that this isnt a criticism of police. Its an attempt at fairness. This about restoring trust and confidence not an indictment of police but to instill a process of fairness. So that when something tragic does happen, the family and the Community Knows that it was done and it was done fairly.
