Diagrams models and examples theyre all part of a very extensive and specific prom dress code that has students from archbishop ryan upset. It requires girls to get School Administration approval of the dress they want to wear to the dance. Fox 29s dave kinchen joining us live from northeast philadelphia. Dave, i guess most students arent very happy about this rule. Really not. We all know prom is a right of passage with some degree of fun and freedom, but some restrictions have popped up here at archbishop ryan before the big dance even begins. You shouldnt have to send pictures in. Its kind of weird. Reporter gabrielle is like many seniors at Archbishop Ryan High School a prom dress approval system set up by the administration goes too far. Girls have been told to email administrators pictures of their dresses for a yes or no decision. She says her dress pictured here was approved but she diss approves of the process altogether. I dont like that we have to send pictures especially because dresses like every girl loves their dress and once you send the picture you still have to wait for, um, for approval and that dress could be gone. We scrolled through the archbishop dress guidelines. Dresses cannot be show stomach and back less dresses cannot be cut below the natural waste. Juniors and seniors responded with this petition on change. Org calling the policy sexist. Saying it does not account for different body types among other grievances. I think that girls should be allowed to at least show on the sides little bit. Not like the whole entire stomach its not like were walking in belly dancers. Reporter the ab ryan boys dont like it either. Sort of disrespectful towards us. We cant control ourselves around women. That they have to be so covered up we can control ourselves. Reporter School Officials released some numbers they say 150 dresses were approved in the process. 11 were approved pending modifications. He once shadowed peeing selling newspapers that help those in well now hes taking it a step further and plans on selling those papers himself. Bill thought it was important to actuall actually walk another persons shoes for goodness sa sake. We are putting out our money, you know. Because thats our time and our money. Some people just look at it what were doing almost like begging or pan happened link. Reporter several weeks ago i shared the story of the newspaper one step away. I shadowed formerly homeless vendor as she sold the paper that laos those in need to start a lowcost business. Today was their annual event where they asked Business People and the media to come experience what they deal with first hand. Today were having a big sell off in philadelphia but big sell off in 35 countries and 110 papers across the world. Reporter i was partnered with zachary a one step away vendor for four years. The goal was to set up across from each and sell as many papers as we can. It started off as fun competition between us. But reality sunk in quickly. Once again not only did the overwhelming majority of people ignore zachary, but i also got to experience obviously to a lesser extent how chilly people can be to you when they stereotype you immediately. Were helping raise money for the homeless today. Buy a paper. How you doing, sir. I didnt experience the blatant disrespect and that zachary and some other vendor todays because i was wearing my station jacket and was somewhat recognizable. But i did get to understand what i believe was the point of the exercise today. To learn that many who regularly encourage people to pick themselves up and work for a living are far from supportive when they try. At the end of the day i sold all 25 of the papers that i was given in about an hour. Zachary says he had a good day as well and it was time to head back to speak to the other vendors and get their take on the lessons of the day. Today it was an eye opening experience because these are respected people from the community and when they were standing out there with that vest on holding that paper, they got treated the same way i usual dollar. In the city i think too often we just forget to, f someone walks up and just said hello its okay to turn back and just say hello to them. Giving a dollar to someone and getting a newspaper having something to read, i mean, i think thats the least that we can do. You know what im saying . , because theyre willing to do their part we need to be willing to do our part. Reporter one step away giving people a chance to improve their lives.
