we all learned in school, 32 degrees to freeze. tucker, you want to begin. try to make it understandable for people. tucker gets very scientific. >> it is a wonderful question and a great science answer but the simplest answer is this. in the upper layers of the atmosphere when the snow started falling, the temperature upstairs, several thousand feet up was below 32678 that is the first ingredient you need. as the snow was fall, it was falling yesterday into a very dry atmosphere. request. >> can i say something? remember yesterday, i kept saying we don't think that is hitting the ground. it wasn't hitting the ground than but it was falling from the cloud. now, go ahead. >> the process of the snowflakes falling from the cloud into i very dry atmosphere. the first snowflakes evaporate and as they evaporate, they release heat and that cools the foyer. the column of air cools as the snowflakes start to fall. what we thought yesterday was there weren't going to be enough snow flakes or rain to fall to cool the atmosphere so we weren't going to have any problems but as we learned the hard way -- >> as you saw, there was a lot of snow that fell. it wasn't a major snowfall but at some points yesterday, it was really coming down. >> enough to make a snow ball apparently. >> it was coming down. there was enough of it coming down that it cooled those columns of air enough that the snow was no longer evaporating. it was staying together and falling right here as snow. >> the air temperature when measured was still above freezing. >> but it was cooling that air -- even the erap rating snow earlier in the air was helping to cool that air. so it is cooling from the top down. we're still at 40 but up there, 30s, 28. whatever it is. as it comes down, even the evaporating snow is helping to cool that air enough that that snow can stick together and come through and fall here as snow as the temperatures are falling. >> the temperature yesterday fell during the course of the afternoon. it was 40 at about noon and i think it was in the 34 degrees or so by 3:00 or 4:00 when the snow started coming down. >> here in this area, we know it does not have to be 32- degree. frequently, here, it is snowing at 36-degree. the outer edge is about 41 degrees. >> i was going to ask. how warm could it be and still come down. >> 41 degrees. >> we were close to it. >> yesterday turned out to be a very tricky forecast. we were on the wrong side it was. >> it was still pretty though. i wasn't mad at you. i was okay with it. >> i'm calling tucker like what's going on. we're getting snow. >> i was sitting there thinking oh, boy, those guys are panicking. >> we understood why it was happening. luckily, it wasn't i major deal but it was pretty. -- luckily, it wasn't a major deal but it was pretty. great question. sorry it wasn't quite right yesterday but it was pretty. >> that is actually tucker's philosophy in his lating life. might not be quite right but she's pretty. >> what?
