chancellor michelle rhee say an unknown number of layoffs will be made to help close a $40 million budget gap. are the job cuts really necessary. d.c. council chair vincent gray says he crunched the number and he said federal stimulus money should make up for any budget shortfall. >> that is a concern we have and that is why again we feel like the council is being scapegoated in this, that it was not budget action on our part that led to this. and that it is a way of getting rid of people that they want to get rid of. >> chairman gray also wants the schools chancellor to explain her decision comes out from the labor department at 8:30. we'll have time to look through that. exists will pore through it. they'll look for silver linings. we are expecting an additional 170,000 jobs lost in september. we had 260 in august. a far cry from the 800,000 we had last january at the peak of the job destruction but still we're losing jobs. we'll try to find a few things that might be positive out of that report like increased hourly workweek, increased wages. maybe hiring of part-time workers. those are signs that we're getting close to starting to add jobs. >> what is going on with the possible ge/comcast merger? what is the latest on that? >> very early stages of talks apparently between ge and comcast about merging. comcast cable operations with nbc universal, nbc universal makes up about 10% of ge's revenues every year. it would be a huge conglomerate of broadcast net works, affiliates with nbc, the cable stayings of comcast like e entertainment. you would have film studios as well. so you would have this huge media conglomerate. what it goes to show you is that the value of cable networks is growing and the value of broadcast networks is going down, particularly in this time when ad revenue is down. very early stages. comcast values nbc universal at about $35 billion so that gives you some idea of how big of a deal this would be. and how the structure is still yet to heights. that iwhere matt ask land is this morning. >> reporter: it has been a deadly week here in prince george's county. the latest one happening right about 9:30 last night. we have video shot not long after that homicide. prince gorge's county police investigating. here is what we know at this point. an adult male was found with a gunshot wound. he was then taken to a hospital and pronounced dead a short time later. as wave been talking about, this has been a deadly weekend in prince george's county. yesterday, also, two teens were shot. one of them died. then on tuesday on buchanan street, another homicide. last sunday on marlay drive, a home invasion, a homicide there. on bank run terrace, that was on saturday. that is five different homicides here in prince george's county. police at this point are not drawing any connection at this point. at least they are not telling us about any connection. the murder that happened here last night, police have few details. they say they do not have a suspect and at this point, they do not have a motive. we'll stay on top of this. it will be a tough day for some prince george's county employees. today, they will find out if they are losing their jobs. it is part of the county's plan to make up for a more than $22 million budget cut from maryland board of public works. the employees being cut will be put on paid administrative leave starting today giving them about a month to find other work. now to the budget battle in the district. the mayor and shools chancellor say a $40 million budge the shortfall will force bigger class sizes and an unknown number of teacher layoffs. but fighting words from council chair vincent gray. he says the budget cuts are a smoke screen and there should be no teacher layoffs. according to councilman gray, federal stimulus money should make up for any shortfall. he says for 2010, the school system is set to receive more money with fewer students. >> always not a reason that is attributable to the council's budget work and that is where we're deeply concerned about and infuriated about, frankly. if you want to cut teachers, take responsibility for that. >> chairman gray also says he believes the job cuts may just be a way to oust critics of the mayor and the schools chancellor ain't school spokesperson says there is no update on layoffs right now. redskins fans are having something early this morning because, it is a possibility out there with some of the dampness we have in the atmosphere. but overall, things are dry. there is quite a bit of rain associated with the frontal system out to our west. that front doesn't really get here until tomorrow. hence the rain that we're talk about for periods or parts of the day tomorrow. it won't be a washout all day long but it will feel like a damp day. partly sunny today. warmer temperatures, high into the 70s because a warm front comes through. five-day forecast tomorrow, not a washout but a chance of some rain in the them, which is why we are here specifically at brookside gardens in wheaton because they are hosting the 8th annual mushroom fair. who knew you could have a whole day dedicated to mushrooms. so what we are going to do this morning is talk about all the different types of mushrooms that are out there, especially the ones that you can find in our area. we've already got some of them displayed right now. then we're actually going on a mushroom hunt. we're going to head into the woods. if we're spending all this time with mushrooms, we've got to cook them up some way so we've got some cooking
