i mean what to you say to people? i know people are wondering -- you don't. >> as his remarks stretched on, some stern-faced romney aides were seen wincing backstage. clearly that didn't work for some of the people at the republican convention. turning to other stories making headlines now, five prince george's joint firefighters went to the hospital after battling an apartment fire t happened last night on huntly square drive in temple hills. four people were trapped inside the building. thankfully, all were rescued. four of the injured firefighters had minor burns. another was treated for commotion. george huguely will spend 23 years in prison -- for exhaustion. george huguely will spend 23 years in prison after he was convicted of murdering yeardley love. the jury recommended he serve 26 years behind bars but the judge reduced that punishment by three years. maryland health officials are reporting the state's first death from west nile virus. the health department will only say it was an adult who died but we don't know where they lived or if they had any underlying medical issues. maureen umeh has more. >> give us kisses. yeah. >> reporter: dusk time, prime time for mosquitos. at this gathering of people and their pets in chevy chase, some are taking precautions against bites and the west nile virus. >> i have my little mosquito repellent and senator has the heart worm pills. >> is it working? >> it does work. it seems to work so far. >> i think the chances are pretty low that anybody who gets bitten will contract it so i'm going with the low odds and hoping that that serves me well. >> health officials recommend clearing anything from your yard that may contain water and early spring and hot summer are said to be responsible for the rise in cases. twenty-three years in prison. that was the sentence hand bed out to former university of virginia la crosse player george huguely. he was convicted of murdering his girlfriend in a drunken rage. prosecution witnesses testified that he had a violent streak while huguely's lawyers tried to show their client was a thoughtful and caring man. the jury had recommended that huguely serve 26 years in prison but the judge reduced that punishment by three years. a major d.c. landmark is reopening today after undergoing a long renovation. the reflexing pool will once again be accessible to the public. sherry ly is down on the mall checking out the new and improved site. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. now, the chain link fence surrounding the reflecting pool is expected to come down sometime today. the water in the pool was refilled earlier this month and after nearly two years are of construction, the reflexing pool will reopen to the public. the reflecting pool was almost completely reconstructed and redesigned in a $34 million project. the stagnant pool of water now has a new filtration system that will keep the water moving. is sham owerrened will be fed with four million gallons of water from the tidal basin instead of city reserves. it will felt are through a pump system, be cleaned and resrk late. before this, the reflexing pool lost about 500,000 gallons of water every week. -- and recirculated. they added some cosmetic touches with specially tinted concrete that will improve of the reflectivity of the pool. and it is now wheelchair accessible. there is also additional lighting around it as well. some 25 million people visit here every year. it has been closed since 2010 but the national park service says, when visitors see it now, it will be worth the wait. that is the latest here. back to you. >> all right. can't wait to so that open up. it will be good to see that ready to go. coming up, the gulf coast still feeling the effects of isaac. >> the big problem now, floods. up next, we'll get a live report from louisiana. stay with us. we'll be right back. you'rere on timeout leo! some things won't last 25 years. ah! woof! some things will. it is a scene people down south are all too familiar w isaac has crawled into the nation's midsection but not before leaving behind severe flooding in the gulf coast. we have more on the isaac aftermath. good morning, elizabeth. >> good morning. just because that storm has been downgraded to a tropical depression doesn't mean that folk here in louisiana are in the clear. >> we were just overwhelmed with the amount of evacuations we had to handle. >> reporter: an intentional break in a levee wall flooding the community around it. take a look at neighborhoods left sub merged, roofs just peeking out from under the water. authorities rushed to evacuate. man were blind side giant food i just grab mild purse and took off. >> reporter: rows offed intoed houses have officials wondering if others are trapped inside and may need help. >> phone lines are down, electricity is down. phone lines are inoperable. a lot of the cellular serve is is basically nonexistent. we are facing serious problems. >> the coming days will provide a better look the aisaac's damage but already some shocking sights. final resting places found in shambles as caskets are unearthed at a cemetery. still, many are university trying to mop up at home. >> you pump it out the front and it comes in the back door. there is just for place to send it. >> reporter: we've been reporting some heart breaking news so a little bit of a silver lining in all of this. that storm is heading north towards states like missouri and arc ask and into illinois. a lot of those areas have been suffering from the worst drought they've seen in more than five decades. a little bit of relief to folks and farmers in that area. >> talking about the evacuations kind of unexpected. how much longer do we think now that this could go on that they will have to evacuate additional people? >> the last time we talked yesterday, we thought only those 3,000 people that were evacuated were going to be the only ones. but then they were fearful of a dam up just about the state line of louisiana and mississippi and they evacuated about 60,000 people not only in louisiana but also in mississippi just for precautionary measures. as far as evacuations today, nothing is planned. however, yesterday, we saw the very unexpected vacs. the governor spoke yesterday to resident where he said he doesn't want people going back into their homes unless they have permission from each parish president. he is being very vocal, very open. the media has had great access to him. as long as folk are educated and aware and hopefully they can get back to their homes as the weekend continues. >> all right. a much quieter scene down there now this morning. thank you. another incentive to head over to the new maryland live casino. that is coming up next. >> here is something you have aprobably never seen before, aperson in a wheelchair under water. we'll explain. we are checking your weekend weather and traffic on this labor day weekend, this holiday weekend coming up. stay with us. we'll be right back.
