they had an apartment fire in district heights leaving some folks out in the elements this morning. we'll check in with stacy cohan in just a few minutes. thank you for being with us on this thursday morning. i'm steve chenevey. >> i'm tony perkins in for gurvir dhindsa. welcome to fox 5 news. turn is here with changes in the forecast in the form of rain eventually. >> yeah, i think rain tonight. mostly today, just luke yesterday, will be dry. you will see some peeks of sunshine but don't be fooled. we have a lot of rain on the way in the friday, saturday time period. right now, the weekend gets too thumbs down weather-wise. not a beautiful weekend. we'll show you the satellite- radar. actually just the radar here on the max 2 system and you can see the run showers that have developed just to our south. that is not associated with the storminess that arrives. you might see a few early showers out to the shore. here in the immediate washington area, i think it will be just cloudy during the day. we'll see a few peek of sunshine during the course of our afternoon and most of the rain will held off until tonight as we have high pressure protecting us for a couple more hours. 47 at reagan national. 44 at bwi marshall. we will have a lot of clouds around and an increasing chance of rain that. rain really arrives in earnest. we'll have floodwatches, that kind of thing. we'll talk about that in just a couple of minutes. >> at least it is not snow. >> that is true. >> let's check in with julie wright for a look at traffic. >> we're having the luck of the leprechaun. we are not talking snw anymore with st. patty's day being less than a week away. >> there you go. >> still looking in the cameras, not finding that vehicle fire but we have reports outer loop of the beltway. inner loop looks good out of oxon hill. outer loop headed south towards the american legion bridge, all lanes open along this stretch. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. we are following breaking news out of prince george's county this morning where an apartment building has gone up in flames. >> it is happening in distct heights. stacy cohan joins us live on the scene with details. >> this was the situation that could have been very, very bad. fortunately, nobody was injured. let's say that right off the bat. there is an apartment complex here. early this more than, firefighters were called to the scene for reports of heavy fire and smoke. some people were out on their balconies fearful they may have to be rescued. the fire was contained to a ground level apartment. effect was able to escape. there were five people at home at the time of the fire. oneperson suffered minor burns to her hand. she is being treated here on the scene. the cause of this fire we're told? people and destroying hundreds of homes. a wet storm system will make for a soggy commute across central alabama this morning. downpours there caused severe flooding, some knee deep. the additional water force a creek in birmingham to jump its banks. the flash flooding left some people trapped and stranded in their cars. luckily, no one was hurt j they are getting more as we speak. a tornado watch across much of mississippi. >> is that part of the same system headed here? >> yeah, we won't see tornadoes here but we are going to see heavy rain by friday night and saturday. be ready for this. one to two inches of rain forecast just for friday and saturday doesn't include what we might receive later tonight and during sunday. a slow-moving system causing lots of flooding across the south. at this hour and i want to emphasize here, the morning commute, move of today, we should be try. we'll probably see some sunshine today. but as with get into the nighttime hours and tomorrow, the rain will arrive. let's go to satellite-radar. right now, just cloud cover. we do have a few very light sprinkles and showers just to our south. can you see those. generally, they are across the bay and points south down towards ocean city, salisbury, you might see a light shower. this is generally being pushed to the east as we have high pressure off to the north and east of us that will kep us dry in the washington area for much of the day. i don't expect too much in the way of problem today but things will be changing in a big way as we get into the overnight hours tonight and during the day on friday. i mentioned the tornado watches that have been posted for much of mississippi. you can see the extremely heavy rain into alabama across the panhandle of florida at this hour and this is all thanks in part to an area of low pressure right here that is just a very slow mover so what we'll see is all this rain generally heading in the direction of the washington area. you can see we still have several hours before it gets here. i think the timing on the rain will be during the day tomorrow, tomorrow ght into saturday. we could have a period of pretty heavy rain and we'll get it out of here towards the end of of the weekend. the weekend doesn't look great. floodwatches have already been posted for friday morning through saturday night for counties off to the west here. so places like hagerstown out towards frostburg, cumberland, you we'll be under that floodwatch. that is a come nation of heavy rain, one to two inches of rain as i mentioned and a lot of snow melt. we will have problems with area rivers and streams, that kind of thing, particularly to the north and west as we get into the daytime hours tomorrow. here is the good news in this forecast. 47 in washington. the temperatures will jump into the low 60s. it will be mild for you. 47 in quantico. 45 at dulles. at least temperatures will cooperate. there could be a few rays of sunshine during the course of the day today with lots of clouds. i mentioned an early morning shower and we should be dry. the rain arrives particularly overnight and will be with us here most of friday. heavy rain fry night into saturday. saturday does not look nice at this hour. sunday look mostly cloudy with some early showers. i'm keeping my fingers crossed that by monday, we'll see more sunshine but i've got to be honest with you, if it moves slow enough, onday could be a rotten day as well. let's cheer you up by giving you to julie wright. >> i was going to say, that could be rotten as well. just that laurel. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. biking through d.c. may soon get a little smoother. d-d.o.t. is looking at proposals to expand the city's bike infrastructure. one includes making the center lane from the white house to the capitol a bike lane. soy fairfax county looking if a bank robber they say doesn't typically fit the profile. she is accused of hitting up three banks. the most recent along the 5100 block of westfield boulevard in centreville. claudia coffey has our story. >> reporter: this woman seen in this bank and leaving another bank is believed to be behind three bank robberies in fairfax in less than a matter of week. people we spoke to were shocked by the string of robberies but even more so that it is a woman. >> oh, my gosh. that is shocking. you neve expect a female to do that. >> unbelievable. >> the woman seen in the pictures robbed this bak as recently as tuesday afternoon. in each robbery, the woman wears dark clothes ache starve to hide her face and sunglasses. she approaches the teller the same way each time. >> she goes in and apparently implies a weapon with a note and then the robbery takes place. >> reporter: she is an african- american woman, heavy set, 5'4" and between 160 and 170 pounds. she is believed to be behind a bank robbery march 2nd. >> we do want see a lot of women bank robbers. it happens and sometimes we to see them but certainly it does raise interest sometimes. >> reporter: fairfax county police say they are working with officers in each of their stations so they know what to keep that you are eyes open carrying this sarcophagus arrived during his shift. >> the crate was fumigated at the country of origin. >> so it was clean. yes, the outside. >> the shippers properly identified what was in the crate, a wooden sacophagus and that peaked specialist cursado's curiosity. >> i went searching through the internet, found out that some items were stolen from egypt in the past. >> reporter: he alerted his superiors about the ancient artifacts. right away, the chief vector was was suspicious bartly because of the packing job. >> there were no humidity protection devices inside that you might find. there was no acid-free paper. it was morstyrofoam peanuts, shred newspaper and a felt blanket. >> reporter: not museum quality packing. >> correct. >> reporter: the paperwork trail was a bit hazy also. the # thousand-year-old artifact supposedly come first thing spanish museum to an american broke ore behalf of a canadian client. ultimately, no one could prove egypt had ever given permission for removal of this piece of its ancient civilization. a u.s. judge approved the seizure of the sarcophagus and competing ownership claims eventually melted away. ownership has now been formally conveyed to the government of egypt. the sarcophagus will be put on public display in cairo starting april 7th. the head of the egyptian supreme council of antiquities personal invited border next couple of days aren't going to be perfect. we had a couple of light showers down towards fredericksburg and they are fading off to the south and east here now south of ocean city. i i don't think rain will be a big factor in our forecast today although the clouds and the gathering storm system will be. let's some of on it our satellite-radar and i'll show you what i mean by gayering this storm system. no problems in washington but look what is lurking off it our south and west. i think the arrival will be any time after 10:00, 11:00 tonight. it will stick around if the day on friday, linger into the day on saturday. we'll watch an area of low pressure which will intensify and develop along the coast. you get the idea. rain will be heavy at times around here. just count on that. by friday serious injuries here in district heights. the apartment building behind me is the one affected. firefighters got the call early this morning that there was an apartment on fire. when they arrived, some people were out on their balconies. there was heavy smoke, heavy fire from a ground floor apartment. the firefighters managed to get everyone out safely including the five people that were actually in the apartment at the time of the fire. one woman did suffer minor burns to her hands. she is being treated and released here on the scene. those affected include the five members of the family in that ground level apartment and folks in the apartment above. they will not be able to return to their homes this morning. everybody else is slowly trickling back into the building. the donuts. actor cory haim being remembered as talented yet troubled. he hit the big screen as a child. he died yesterday at the age of 38. virginia governor bob mcdonald has reverseed a controversial decision. the state's attorney general sent a letter to state institutions last week telling them homosexuals aren't protected from discrimination under state law. cede, governor mcdonnell issued a new statement saying employment discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated by his administration. the governor also says federal law prohibits discrimination. in maryland, awe state senator haintroduceed a measure that will prohibit the state from recognizing same-sex marriages authorized elsewhere without legislative approval. senator nancy jake sobs says her bill was intended to invalidate a recent opinion from maryland attorney general doug gansler. he said last month that state agencies must recognize route of state gay marriages until the legislature or courts ecide otherwise. this is a story bay super mom or the is something crazy going on. a kentucky woman didn't even know she was pregnant, at least that is what she says until she went into labor. once she realized what was going on. she said she delivered the baby all by herself, pushed the baby out, cut the umbilical cord and cleaned up the newborn there. she picked up her 7-year-old from school and then went to the hospital. >> i had lost a bunch of weight and i just thought i was gaining it all back. i was on the pill and having perio every month like i was supposed to. >> newborn weighed in at six pound, 15 ounces. he is just fine. he and his mom are home from the hospital. well, work on a bridge took a surprising turn for some construction workers. not left or right but up. way up. pretty cool video here in florida. four workers are safe after getting stuck on a drawbridge. >> they were doing some construction on the bridge in pompano beach when the hydraulics failed and that caused the bridge to rise unexpectedly. they were stuck at the top. firefighters had to rescue them and bring them down in harnesses. nobody was hurt and now we all have pretty neat stories to tell about how cool their job is. >> that would be a little scary though. they remained quite calm during the whole thing apparently. look at that. >> if they're iron workers, they are used to being up on again. this will not be a great looking weekend for us. and the reason why, we are transitioning. if you are complaining you have a sinus headache, it is probably tree pollen. unbelievably high the last couple of days. with i little sunshine and warmer temperatures, the tree pollen has gone wild. >> the bugs are already coming out too. i've heard reports. >> couple of light sprinkles and showers off it our south and east this morning. ocean city, you are on the northern edge of it. across the lower eastern shore, we've had light showers down towards salisbury and cambridge. fredericksburg, you had a couple of light sprinkles as well. immediate beltway area up into central maryland, we should be fine. i think moch -- most of us will be dry. we'll see a little sunshine nix in but don't be fooled by it as we have this moisture-laden system. look at that heavy rain, thunderstorm activity across the south and yeah, in alabama anmississippi, we've got tornado watches that are flying right now. we've got flood warnings for much of alabama. this is a spring-like system and it is generally headed in our direction. i think most of today will be dry but as we get into the nighttime hours, any time after about midnight tonight, the rain will start and it will be around during the day tomorrow. we'll have a period of heavy rain likely tomorrow night and first part of saturday as we watch an area of low pressure develop along the coast. it will be a wet couple of days aroundhere and because of the slow-moving nature of the system t will really not get out of here until sunday or monday at the earliest. so it looks like some of the unsettled weather will be with us here for much of the weekend. floodwatch not in washington but out to the west. we have one to two inches of rain by friday night and saturday. we have likely problems on some of the area streams and rivers particularly off to the north and west. don't be shocked tomorrow if we don't see the floodwatch get extended
