[ cheering and applause ] >> we shall see, a big win for newt gingrich tonight in his homestate of georgia, but that was expected. everywhere else he's finished third to fourth. ohio remains critical again for mitt romney tonight. keep in mind no republican has ever won the presidency without winning ohio. he could still come out tonight with nearly 200 delegates. however, if romney is unable to lock down the buckeye state, he may be unable to turn his entire attention and money supply from barack obama and try to separate himself from the other candidates. a prince george's county councilwoman accused of going over 100 miles an hour on the beltway in a county car getting a ticket. internal investigation found she was clearly wrong but it was the officer who stopped her who should have done his job. fox 5's wisdom martin in the newsroom with more. >> chief mark mcgraw of the police department said the officer who stopped her did not make a mistake and did an outstanding job. however, a review panel with hindsight and all the information decided more needed to be done. prince george's county councilwoman karen toles may have been able to outrun the media, but eventually the law caught up with her. today an executive review committee looking into toles' speeding on the beltway said she should have gotten two citations. so today councilwoman toles was issued and accepted a citation for reckless driving. >> i take no pleasure in this additional action but know it is the right thing to do for our county. >> reporter: february 22nd toles was caught by police driving more than 100 miles per hour on the beltway in a county car, but the officer gave her a citation for an unsafe lane change, not speeding. >> 105 was registered on the camera in the patrol officer's car, but that's based on gps and based on his vehicle, but he was going 105 in an attempt to catch up with her. >> reporter: as to why the officer who stopped the councilwoman didn't ticket her? the chief explains. >> the officer who made the traffic stop basically the only way you can actually charge for speeding, you either have to pace an individual and to have that -- to do that you have to have a certified calibrated speedometer, which he did not have. >> reporter: the councilwoman released a statement through her attorney saying because the matter involves a pending traffic charge, we believe it would be inappropriate to publicly comment on the matter at this time. county residents we spoke with tonight say it still doesn't seem fair. >> i'm good with that that she got one today. she should have gotten one in the beginning when she was stopped. >> i think it takes something away by giving it to her weeks later. i really do. i think now it's a big deal because they had to go back instead of doing what they should have done at first. >> the councilwoman already has two points for previous citations. now the penalty for reckless driving is fine of five hundred ten dollars six points. the citation for changing lines is ninety dollars one or two points and in maryland it takes eight points for a license suspension. brian? a news alert out of calvert county, health officials are investigating a mystery illness that claimed the lives of three family members, left another hospitalized. 81-year-old ruth blake lived in this house in lusby and her adult children are the victims. preliminary tests show at least two of the victims were infected with influenza a. it's believed the flu may have been complicated by a bacterial co- infection. >> i know there was concern this may be an infection spreading in one of these communities and house to house that, children could be involved. that's not the case. we have no evidence that the point that any individual other than these four people have been infected. >> blake, her son and one of her daughters died from the illness. another daughter is hospitalized but said to be improving. another victim from last week's ohio school shooting was laid to rest today and the suspected gunman appeared in court. laura evans is everywhere at 11:00. >> the teen accused of killing three students at chardon high school in juvenile court today. lane did not enter a plea, but prosecutors say he has admitted to opening fire last week on the students in the cafeteria. the motive remains unclear. a guilty verdict in the trial of a texas businessman accused of bilking investors out are more than $7 billion. -- out of more than $7 billion. allen stanford was convicted of more than 13 counts in his ponzi scheme trial and could spend the rest of his life behind bars. stanford was found hiding in virginia after 2009 when the feds raided his business. the d.c. council gave final approval to a bill to make it easier for certain same sex couples to be divorced. the bill will allow couples who were married in the district to get divorced if they live somewhere that does not recognize their marriage. under current law one member of the couple has to live in d.c. six months before starting divorce proceedings. the bill is headed to mayor gray for his signature. israel prime minister benjamin netanyahu met with house speakers today, john boehner and nancy pelosi, discussed the friendship between u.s. and israel reaffirming america will always stand by its ally. still ahead on the news edge a snowmobiler buried by an avalanche, the amazing story coming up. also do soft drinks cause cancer? >> according to aaa, the national average is 3.76 for a gallon of regular, 3.87 in d.c., 3.71 in maryland, 3.65 in virginia. a new metro crime report pinpoints the most dangerous metro stops. shawn yancy has your fox 5 top five. >> up first tonight why vitamin d is critical to aging women. no. 5, a vitamin d deficiency in older women could increase their risk of death. nearly 1,000 female nursing home residents were studied and more than 90% had lower than recommended vitamin d levels and women with the lowest levels have a higher risk of dying. no. 4, the chemical that makes cola brown does not cause cancer, that's according to the fda. the advocacy group center for science in the public interest accused several colamakers of using too much of a chemical called 4mi. the fda says you'd have to drink 1,000 cans of soda to get the amount that caused cancer in rodents. no. 3, more kids are getting cavities these days. according to the new york times, dentists nationwide report an increase in preschoolers with multiple cavities. one reason for the increase? well, some parents say they didn't think about brushing their toddler's teeth until it was too late. no. 2, a heads up if you ride metro on the weekend, sections of the red line will be closed and orange, blue and yellow lines single tracking at some points. give yourself an extra 15 minutes. crews will work from 10 p.m. friday to closing sunday. no. 1 tonight, serious crime dropped 16% on metro from 2010 to 2011, but the transit agency reports the deanwood station had the most problems in 2011 with 66 serious crimes and six arrests. anacostia and l'enfant plaza were next. arlington cemetery and clarendon were the safest. that's tonight's fox 5 top five. a weekend on the slopes nearly takes a deadly turn for one group of friends. they were snowmobiling in utah when an avalanche is triggered and one man buried in 10 feet of snow. his friends quickly rushed to save him and one quickly rushed to get a camera. fox's zach whitney has the story. >> where's he at? >> the entire mountain just starts breaking off and my heart just sank. i'm just like oh, no. >> reporter: bronson butler and tyson black say they knew the avalanche risks but went anyway. while black was on the hillside it, gave way burying him in 10 feet of snow. >> i ran back to my sled and grabbed my shovel, grabbed the probe and just started probe everythingwhere just everywhere and the worst thing was i couldn't find him. >> reporter: butler is a trained rescuer and helped on searches before. he knew time was of the essence. >> in all reality i know what's going on in my head. i'm going i'm going to pull out my lifelong best friend and he's not going to be alive. >> reporter: nearby black's girl friend watched. >> i just felt so helpless. it was the most helpless feeling and it was the worst day of my life. >> reporter: black was under the snow without oxygen for about 20 minutes and another friend found him alive and breathing. >> we were just bawling and hugging each other, just so thankful he was okay and it was a miracle. i didn't think that we were going to pull him out blytheing, let alone alive. >> reporter: -- breathing, let alone alive. >> reporter: it took another 20 minutes to dig him out. black was uninjured. but her says it's changed the way he looks -- butler says it's changed the way he looks at the mountain and hopes others will pay more attention to the avalanche warnings. >> no one is invincible. no one -- we thought we were invincible and nothing can happen. we can outrun anything. it's not like that. it's not like when it actually happens. it's a whole different story. >> they got so much snow so fast, that's why there's so many avalanche concerns right now. >> that is crazy, frightening. glad they're okay, happy ending there, one of the lucky ones for sure. >> the pick of the week tomorrow or thursday? >> i'd say thursday. i like it a little warmer, but i think both days will be really nice. wednesday will be sunnier, but thursday will be warmer. be a little shower activity coming, but don't worry about that just yet. it doesn't look like it's going to be anything heavy. don't expect to step out your door at 7 a.m. and find it all warmy on you. it's not going to be. we'll be kind of chilly overnight dropping to the 20s and 30s. it's going to take until noon before we start warming up. tomorrow afternoon will be great, lots of sunshine. today 49 degrees, but we know we're in for a warm-up because we can see what we've had off to our west as close by as cincinnati with 63, st. louis 75, little rock 73, wichita 70, a lot of heat to be tapped and our wind out of the south tomorrow means we will likely make it to the low 60s. a little warmer than that even on thursday. here's the temperature trend. our average high now 52 degrees. we were a little below it today. we're going above it tomorrow to 63 degrees. thursday 68. i would not be surprised if a few spots through central virginia get close to 70 degrees. we've got some showers moving through late thursday into the very first part of friday. friday's temperature 60. if we get some showers, i think they'll be gone probably by the noon hour and it looks to me like they'll be fairly light. just a quick disturbance moving through. it's a frontal system, but it has cold air behind it and saturday you'll feel that when the temperature drops back down to 50 degrees, but still such a good bargain for the middle of march, which is where we'll be the end of that temperature trend. we are dropping tonight. it's 36 in frederick, mart gorge to 31 degrees. -- martinsburg down to 31 degrees. i 43 annapolis, 37 baltimore and also in leonardtown. as we widen the picture, look at chicago 59 degrees at 11:00, detroit 52, columbus 44. so that warmer air to our west and south is slated to get in here. tonight was clear skies, very dry conditions, these temperatures with nowhere to go but down with no clouds to warm us up, but what changes tomorrow is the jet stream which has been taking that dip over the mid-atlantic thanks to the clipper that came through yesterday and delivered that notice to west central virginia. that starts to lift out and as that ridge builds in the jet stream, the warmer temperatures surge in. we're headed for the 60s, maybe some 70s thursday. we cool back down for the weekend as that stronger front comes through friday afternoon, back down to the 50s. we time out some of the showers here with the futurecast. high pressure is again slipping off the coast tonight and will continue to do so tomorrow. that brings in the mild air with that south to southwested with unduring the day. pausing this at 3:00 thursday -- southwest wind during the day. pausing this at 3:00 thursday, i could see it definitely getting up to 70. by midnight we begin to see them closing in on western maryland, the showers. thursday overnight into friday will be mild. 7 a.m. there's that line of showers coming through, but by noon it's gone, by 5:00 we've got the sun back and we are in fine shape as we head into the weekend. there will be maybe another chance for some showers. we talked about the rain friday. saturday is dry. we begin daylight saving time saturday night into sunday, maybe some showers back in the forecast again sunday. that's weather, but it's edges north carolina. saturday georgetown concluded the regular season with an 83- 69 road loss at marquette. the loss was costly because it prevents the hoyas from earning a double bye in the big east tournament. georgetown will play pittsburgh tomorrow at 2:00. don thompson, iii has to find a delicate balance come tournament time. >> this is a time of year where it's hard. as a coach sometimes you lose game and you know we can beat them up a couple days because you have a couple days to build them back up again, but at this point you have to move on. you really cannot dwell on
