sweeney's mother. >> reporter: georgetown junior derek sweeney will have a late thanksgiving dinner and they won't mind because this evening, derek has been released from a jail in egypt. >> derek sweeney and others were arrested on the roof of a unfortunate building last sunday accused of throwing fire bombs at the security force fighting with pro terses. this evening, derek is on his way home making his mother very happy. >> oh, my goodness. it was an emotional roller coaster to say the least. we were actually very happy that he was on his way home. he called us from frankfurt airport to let us know that he was out of handcuffs and with no plays. that was the first time i was able to recognize his voice but this sounded like my son. it was wonderful. >> reporter: while trying to work out the situation, they were not able to communicate often. we spoke for three minutes one time and then on the pay phone in cairo and a few minutes on thanksgiving day. that was a discussion and and a half. then we we spoke when we found out that all the release pairs had come through and they were going to be taken to the airport for another 30 or 40 seconds. we had three very brief -- four very brief conversations. now, the 19-year-old is grateful to be out. >> initially -- and i mentioned this before -- he said he was not treat very well at first but it got better. but the very last day that they were in the holding cell at the police stakes people from american university cairo were able to bring them blankets and clothes. >> reporter: his flight from dulles airport is scheduled to take off in just a few minute and his mom says there are going to be at least 20 people waiting for him when he arrives. >> a whole lot. tv cameras from the local media out there. >> absolutely. >> thank you. a series of carjackings in our area in just a few days. now, police are investigating two more very similar crimes. take a look. the first carjacking was in the parking lot of the tysons ii mall in mclane. and then later on this week, thieves stole a car with a baby in the car. but the last would 2:00 cases were in wheaton. dick crantz explains that the cases were similar. >> reporter: toirksd the victim was a 60-year-old man, carjacking while sitting in his suv in the 2900 block of university drie. the victim would not give his name but he told fox 5 news that the assailant was carrying a very long knife. the assailant then drove the jeep to two atms in the wheaton area. he forced the victim to withdraw cash and give him the money. he then drove to this gas station where he fled towards a nearby metro station. police are investigating whether he escaped on a train. when the assailant fled, the victim got out of the car, walked calmly into the staismghts he remained calm. when he got up to the clerk, he said, i'm in trouble. i need help, please call the police. >> police described the suspect as a black male, about 50 years old wearing a black shirt, jeans with yellow patches on the thighs, a redskins jacket and a black baseball cap. a similar carjacking the day before thanksgiving also began in the same wheaton plaza parking lot. the victim was a 75-year-old man who was also forced at knife point to withdraw funds from atm machines. again, the carjacker drove to a metro station where he fled on foot and apparently escaped on either a train or a bus. the victim was unharmed. the suspect in this earlier crime was also described as a black male about 35 to 45 years old, wearing jeans and a black baseball cap. from northwest d.c., dick krantz, fox 5 news at least two killers are on the loose after two separate shootings. first, d.c. police are looking for clues in a murder in northeast. a 22-year-old man was shot and killed near an' lee on 19th street near being road. police don't have a lot of information to go on. they are asking anyone with any information to come forward a maryland man was shot and left on the side of the road in adelphi. police found carlos hernandez ramirez from silver spring lying on the ground on adelphi road. he died on the way to the hospital. again, police don't have any clues and are looking for health. two people were killed in an early morning crash. it happened about 5:00 this morning on i-70. here is what we know traffic was stopped because of an accident. all of a sudden, a pickup slammed into the back of a sedan. the collision cause add chain reaction involving four more cars and two people were killed. so far, there are no charges. police in ohio say a craigslist ad looking for a farm hand lurid victims into a deadly robbery scheme. the fbi is now in the case saying that someone is preying on someone desperate for a job. >> i was a caretaker before. when i seen the chance to be a farmer living free, room and board in a truck and 300 a week, i thought that would be an awesome job to have. >> that man was prepared to move himself and his two teen daughters to southern ohio. it turns out the ad was real but the farm is a fake. now, the shooting of one man ant death of three others are being linked into listing. one victim, 51-year-old david paul yi discovered in a shallow grave 80 miles east of columbus. another discovered with a gunshot wound to the head, identified as 47-year-old timothy kearns. kearns' family reported him missing over a week ago. according to family members, kearns was desperate for work and thought that the job was a good offer but strange and agreed to meet his so call boss at this waffle house. >> he was very upbeat about the total thing and told him, my grandson, that he was going to get $300 a week, and a truck to drive around this farm and a trail tore live in. >> a break in this case came as man in south carolina was shot in the arm after he responded and was called to interview. he was able to escape, hiding in a heavily wooded area for seven hours, eventually informing authorities. >> he is my hero, because if he had not gotten away and they would have called me, i would have went and i probably would be dead. >> reporter: a 16-year-old student a has been charged with attempted murder. another man, 52-year-old richard beasley is in jail on unrelated charges but held on one million dollars bond. a judge has imposed a gag order, meaning no further information will be released. however, they are asking anyone with information on this investigation to call the fbi's cleveland office. in new york, julie banderras, fox news. the black friday pepper spray suspect has surrenderd in los angeles. a woman accused of firing pepper spray into this wal-mart crowd so she can get her hand on an xbox that was on sale. 20 people needed medical treatment. no charges have been filed yet. a major development in the nba labor dulles and another day, two days in a row that makes it 70 degrees at bwi. some 18 degrees warmer than the seasonal average. so just unbelievable. skies are very clear. just a few clouds, ridge of high pressure in control. that's starting to slide off the coast. we'll see a few clouds during the course of the night the clouds will be a little more dominant many than they were today across the area but overall, not bad. current temperature, 50 degrees at national. 44 degrees at dulles. for tonight, overnight low around 45 degrees, becoming partly cloudy with some light wind and very light then. the capital christmas tree is making a visit to the alexandria area before coming to the mall. folks in del ray got a chaps to take a look at the fir. they got to sign a banner that gets posted on the truck carrying the tree, kind of like a national christmas card. it came all the way from california. christmas tree stands are opening up all over the place. we found parents picking up trees off the columbia lot. folks who run this lots expect to sell more than 1700 trees before christmas and this is one of the busiest days they're going to have. >> it's an annual tradition. thanksgiving weekend, we have family from out of down and then we go out and get a tree on saturday, put it up and decorate tomorrow. >> we always get our trees from these guys because we know they do it for the community. so every year, thinks our -- this is the six the year. >> the lions club keeps all the profits here in the area. there is now a new thinking about a memorial for cia agents fallen in the line of duty. the u.s. suffered its first casualty in pakistan one decade ago when a cia agent was killed in the line of duty. that sacrifice inspired the cia and the families of the fallen. >> ten years ago, the first american died in combat during the afghan war. this hero was not military but a cia officer. so the aiming si which rarely goes public is going public. i always thought of our 7% overlast year, according to shopper track. now, we're going to see if the trend will stick through the holiday season. so, if you skipped the black friday lines, you have another reason to spend this? >> the national retail federation actually is predicting that 90% of online retailers will offer some type of promotion during the thanksgiving weekend. one of the big things that we are seeing is that, actually, it's no longer about cyber monday but actually cyber week as retailers start promotions on sunday, they may last all the way into friday or saturday. even thanksgiving was a very big day for online shopping this year. >> what kinds of deals are we talking about, you know, savings, that kind of thing? >> wal-mart is offering a 32- inch flat screen tv for under $320. j. c. penney offering 40 items on sale. walgreen a treadmill for sale online. you see a very wide variety of products that will be available. and free shipping is something that many retails will be participating. >> folks are leery about buying online. any tips to make sure that we don't fall into any scams? >> make sure that you are buying from a trusted retailer. many of the sites that you will be purchasing from are places that you may actually be shopping in stores in a bricks and mortar place. make sure that's a known quantity and you are not putting in information that could compromise your identity. so, make sure that you are going for a known brand. >> reporter: being familiar, because i know that many of us are googling and go to the one that's cheapest. you say thinks how you can fall prey to a trap? >> certainly. in fact, i have been a victim of it myself. that's something that you want to make sure that you look for a trusted brand. if you are not sure about the site, check on the better business bureau and make sure that they are a legitimate online retailer. >> good idea there. a survey found that 39% of consumers who plan to shop over this thanksgiving giving plan to do so on cyber monday. that's up 2% from last year. do you think this speaks to people that are just sick and tired of the lines? >> there are no sharp elbows on the internet that's one thing. we have also seen that the online retailing space has been a bright spot in the overall retail industry for several years now. total retail sales expected to grow 2.8% this holiday season but online sales are expected to increase 15%. so we are seeing many people opting to shop from the comfort of their couch. always good to have you here. >> thank you so much. you pet the capitals shuffle of the weather, we will have -- in terms of the weather, we don't have to go online for that at all. temperatures in the 50s right now. but if we take a look across the country you can see that colder air is coming our way. d r, maryland started off good, right? they started off with a win against florida. >> yes, that was a long time ago. >> since then, it has been historic losses. >> in what turned out to be ralph friedgen's last year in his alma mater, the terps went 9-4 and went to the military bowl. and in enters randy edsall whose team comes in with a 7- game losing streak but, sure, that's going to stop when maryland is up 41-14. this thing is over, right? no. third quarter, nc state would mount a rally and what a comeback it was. 41-21 at this point. one of five t d passes. wolf a weather forecaster. >> you are listening to my forecast every night. i love it. >> skies are fairly clear, few high clouds. not a lot to talk about, beautiful shot of the cathedral. we have done excellent in terms holiday and in terps the weather during the curse of the weather so far. we'll see a few more cloud starting to sneak in. wind will pick up as well, so it will be a little bit object breezy side. as we move into midweek, we'll see a lot of improvement. what a big difference for the temperatures here. they were prep on the upside. . 70 in baltimore. thinks the second day in a row baltimore hit 70 degrees, 18 degrees warmer than the seasonal average for the day. mother nature has been extremely kind to us with the sunshine as well as with our temperatures. it's currently 50 degrees right now in annapolis, the same in d.c., 47 in baltimore. 45 in fredericksburg. 52 degrees in haggerstown and we have 42 degrees at winchester. as we travel the middle atlantic, new york city at 58 degrees and 51 degrees at richmond. now, as far as our skies are concerned, we are seeing mainly just a few clouds but we're going to be impact by a frontal system. if you take a look at the temperatures, that's pretty indicative of what's going to happen. there is a pretty distinct dividing line right here and thinks where that cold front is that's moving our way. take a look at the temperatures on the back side of it. we have some 20s here. 20s and 30s. a real influx of cooler air behind that system and we will see the effects of that as we head into the forecast period. so be prepared. but we do have, as i said, ridge of high pressure that's been influences us over the past few days. that's sliding off the coast. we are trying to get some clouds ahead that have frontal system now. let's take a look ahead at radar, or max hd radar. this is the frontal system associated with it. this is going to gradually push it way to us and that's the weather we're going to see come monday. back to the weather map. mild and breedsy day for you to. the approach of the front tall system brings the clouds and especially on sunday night and overnight hours, sunday into monday, we expect to see some of the wet weather creeping in. a mild day tomorrow, 53 degrees mid-day, 52 by the 4:00 hour. we are still seeing some clouds starting to move in but still not a bad night. tomorrow, the winds pick up. partly sunny, mild and breezy at 63 degrees. and five-day forecast will show you just how long that wet weather is going to stick around. looks like monday night into tuesday is when we're going to get the heaviest rainfall. you want kept umbrellas handy for your tuesday, however. ridge of high pressure builds in on hump day. we get back to more sunshine. thursday a spectacular day as far as the sun is concerned but you can see the cooler air behind that frontal system where we enter the 40s. >> some of these early days this week are just gorgeous weather wise. >> thanks, gwen. expect traveling in and out of small town america to get even more time consuming as more and more airlines are stopping service or scaling back even more on their regional flights. >> it's one of the busiest travel weekend of the year but there is new word out that getting over the river and through the woods might become even more difficult. acourting to the a-- according to the associated press, getting in and out of america's smaller cities may be harder to get. the planes typically used at small airports are not cost efficient because of limited seating and the high cost of fuel. in order to save some money, airlines are getting rid of the smaller jets therefore redues or totally eliminating service in some places. for the passengers, that means you are not only spending more time getting to the airport but more money. >> between the jet fuel and having less seats available, it's more expensive. >> i spend well over 1200 just to get dunn to florida. it's normally a very cheap price. back in the 90s when jet fuel was a quarter of what it was, airlines made a bundle carrying people in and out with regional jets. since then, the equation has changed. >> the airlines are trying find ways to, i guess, operate profitably, given the environment. that has to do with taking some excess capacity out of the system. >> plus, according to officials, more regional flight shutdowns are planned and that means driving a long way just to get to the airport for many travelers. >> we got up at 3:00 in the morning. i brought my daughter and my husband. they are going to l.a. and so i just dropped them off. you just have to get up early in the morning >> reporter: here in atlanta, heartsfield jackson international airport handles nearly a quarter of a million passengers every day. in atlanta, jonathan seary, fox news. large trucks traveling on the interstate can get about 20% heavier. congress is considering raising the trucks limits to make it more competitive. a major safety probe into the chevy volt. federal regulators are investigating whether the battery catches fire. investigators are concerned after running crash tests of their own. the result of the inquiry could impact all electric cars two people are now charged with pretending ton medical professionals and injecting them. the women wanted a boost to their back side. instead, backside of his victims. and then this man is accused of playing a physician assistant. the two charge thousands to inject people with super glue, fix a flat and cement. eubank does not know why he was arrested. >> i have no true what you are talking about. i don't have no clue what i'm being charged with. >> reporter: he is out of bond, charged with unlicensed practice of a health care professional but he says he did nothing wrong. >> i'm now victim. you guys need to treat me like a victim. >> reporter: your client was arrested last friday. morris denies the accusation, too, but prosecutors expect that more victims will come forward and boost their case. >> my client says that the allegations are force and they intend to prove their innocence in court we may soon be unraveling mysteries from the red planet. and the georgetown university student arrested in egypt is on his way home now. we talked to his mother about this experience.
