washington waving flags and chanting, demandinghat president obama make good on his promise. first, a family puts aside their grief to plea for answers in a teenager's murder. a 17-year-old caught in the crossfire. that teen gunned down by two masked men at a playground. thanks for joining us tonight. family and friends made the difficult trip back to the crime scene desperate for answers. the killers are still on the loose tonight. robbie is here with the story. >> reporter: maureen, for several hours on this very beautiful day, not a single kid played outside in the playground near the spot where kin yetta was killed. and despite the thought of going back, the family went back to the murder scene to make a tearful plea. with prayers and heavy hearts, family and friend gathered to get a community to give up a killer. >> in my heart uls always... ? until then, there is no resting. especially for 17-year-old kin yetta stanley's mom. >> it's not easy to rest when a cold-blooded killer is out there. i can't bring my daughter back, but maybe if this person is caught, it can save someone else's life. >> reporter: about a dozen family members and schoolmates gathered near the playground at the spot where the teen was shot in the hea by two masked gunmen on thursday night. for friend, the loss is an unbearable pain, coming to the murder scene only magnifies the fear. >> it scares me. i don't want to be here, but i'm here for my sister. >> she was a very ood role model for everybody. everybody loved her. her smile, her laugh. >> reporter: for now, police have no clues. reward posters have been passed out, but not even $25,000 is enough to motivate someone to turn in the gunmen. it all leaves so many painful questions. >> i'm wondering when is enough going to be enough? when it is going to be enough? whose child has to die next before we decide we're going to take this city back. >> we don't have any answers, and i know there are some answers ou there. and i'm begging the community, the residents of this complex, those who saw something because i'm quite certain they saw something. and the persons that did it, please, i beg you, i beg you to turn yourself in. >> such sadness. investigators say two armed security officers were asking nonresidents to leave the property thursday when two masked men ra throughout the area shooting at those security guards. police say the teen was an innocent bystander who was standing near the guards and was hit by stray bullets. maureen, police desperately need some tips. >> let's hope they get it. robbie, thank you for the report. the area near the courtyard is surrounded by apartments with large window. police are hoping someone in the courtyard will at least come forward with an anonymous tip. you can text the tip to 50411. there is a $1,000 reward. over to bethesda now where a man is still in critical condition after he was shot in the head inside his ownarage. investigators are still looking for the person who did it. he had just gotten home from work and pulled into the garage when he was shot. he works for the international monetary fund. police donel know if -- don't know if his job had anything to do with the shooting. new at 10:00 tonight, a shooting near capitol hill, and the gunman on a bicycle chcket e shooting happened about 6:30 on 10th street northeast about a mile from the capitol building. police tell us the victim was shot in the chest. we don't have a name right now, but he's 18 year old in critical condition tonight. another big story, tens of thousands of people from all walks of life marching on the national mall. their one demand, equality for gays and lesbians across the country. claudia was from. >> reporter: people came from all across the country to participate in today's rally, and early estimates put this crowd well into the tens of thousands. >> what do we need? >> reporter: from the white house to the capitol, calls for equality echoed on the streets of d.c. today. >> hopefully it energizes young people because it's important that they have the same rights as everybody in america. >> reporter: tens of thousands called for equality on a variety of issues for gays and lesbians, crowds so deep at times the streetsy impassable. activists came from all over the u.s. like tony lang hart with marched with others in washington to urge action on issues such as repeeling the defense of marriage act. >> even though our marriage remains valid, we get state marriage benefits but no federal benefits. >> reporter: colby grayal came out with her husband and two sons to show her support. >> as an american, you have to stand up for what you believe in, and everybody deserves rights. >> reporter: cynthia nixon added her star power to the event with the hope of bringing more attention to issues close to her heart. >> gay people are just like everybody else, and we deserve the same rights. >> i'm here with you in that fight. >> reporter: president obama rallied this crowd with his promise last night at the human rights campaign dinner where he called on the military's don't ask, don't tell policy to be overturned. many here say that's a step in the right direction. >> but now it's time to get even more revolutionary and make a real difference, make a change in the country for the better. >> reporter: in the shadow of the capitol, the protesters called on all levels of the government to make a change. >> somewhere overthe rainbow. >> reporter: in the name of equality. this march comes just as the house approved a bill that would broaden the definition of a hate crime to include attacks against people for their sexual orient situation. the senate is expected to vote and pass the bill. fox 5 news. >> the chairman of the ncaa told the crowd there's a link between the civil rights movement of the '60s and the gay rights movement of today, adding that good things come to those who agitate. >> progress may be taking longer than you like as a result of all that we face, and that's the truth. do not doubt the direction we are headed and the destination we will reach. >> president obama reaffirming his commitment to the fight with the lgbt community for equal rights. he has promised to end the military's don't ask don't tell policy and pushing congress to repeal the defense of marriage act. but is it all psible? >> the obama administration is in deep deliberations over that very question. more troops or new a strategy? senator diane feinstein is joining senate republicans in calling for more troops. as sarah summons reports, there is one issue where there's no clear division long party lines. >> reporter: as u.s. troops prepare to enter year 9 of the afghanistan war, president obama is faced with the possibility of sending even more s troops to the fight. republicans are pressing the white house to follow the advice of the top u.s. commander in afghanistan. a request for possibly 40,000 more u.s. troops. >> general mcchrystal says 40,000 in that neighborhood, i would go with the general. >> reporter: but some democrats say the u.s. can't take a simplistic approach and just extend more troops without addressing problems in afghanistan while republicans say strong military force is necessary. >> don't send more combat troops, but focus on the afghan forces, the army faster, larger, better equipped. >> without better security, the training element will fail. that's what happened in afghanistan, so they need more combat power. >> reporter: graham also believes if the president goes forward with the plan, afghanistan security will improve in the next two years. but a former general says dedicating more troops means dedicating more time in the gee rawn. >> they have to decide are we in, are we going to stay for ten years and build a viable state or do we try and downsize, watch our allies disappear? watch the pakistanis go unstable? >> reporter: a difficult political decision that rest inside the hands of the president. sarah simmons, fox 5 news. >> senator feinstein believes americans don't have the stomach for another ten years in afghanistan, but says the mission there is in serious jeopardy, and the president has an obligation to follow his top commander's advice to send more troops. a leading intelligence analyst says milted tants may ha worked their way into pakistan's security forces. 20 people were killed in the siege that lasted 22 hours before hostages were freed. the pakistanie vowed to push into rugged terrain to retailiant for a car bombing that killed #49ed people last week. in iraq, several bombs are gone off. the first bomb was in a parked near iraqi police headquarters. the second one went off as civilians ran to help, and the third exploded more than an hour later outside the hospital. the bombs in all killed 19 people. an official says it does not appear to be the work of al-qaida, but probab another group of militants in the region. now to the swine flu, and new fears about the vaccines. today, u.s. health officials tried to clear up misinformation downplaying the vaccines' risk factors. a good safety record from past vaccines bodes well for the vaccine. the government maintains vaccines are simple the best way to protect yourself and your children from the flu. classrooms, the front lines in the front to stop the spread of swine flu or the h1nvirus, but many school districts have few if any school nurses to recognize and respond to flu breakouts. laura has more details. >> reporter: school kids across the nation may not get the medical care on combus they may need if they come down with symptoms of the h1n1 virus. many in the medical community say the student to school nurse ratio is staggering in some states. for example, in utah, the average is only 1 school nurse to every 5,000 students, and many believe that could be a recipe for disaster when it comes to stopping the spread of h1n1 on school campuses. and there are other reasons school nurses are needed more than ever. >> the role of the school nurse has significantly changed over the years. school nurses treat scrapes, burchs, and bruises, but they also work the front lines of disease prevention. and these days, that can mean assessing and treating life threatening medical conditions. >> school nurses work with kids who have chronic illnesses things like asthma and diabetes. seizures. they make sure the kids are healthy and ready to learn. >> reporter: what happens to these children when they don't feel well? they go home. they are losing educational time. if there's a nurse in the building, they can be evaluated >> reporter: a 2008 survey by the nasdaq association of school nurse -- the national association of school nurses found that only 45% of public schools have their own full-time nurse, and 25% of schools don't have school nurses at all. the national association of school nurses also encourages every parent to ask their school administrator if there is a nurse on staff. many times, there is not. which means school staff that may not be medically trained must handle health emergencies. the catholic has five new saints tonight. the pope canonized a hawaiian priest known as father damian. his service to the sick in the late 1800s led him to contract a disease which is how he died. the first family today headed to church at st. john's across the street from the white house. they took the motorcade to church but decided to get home on foot. the first family does not have an official church in d.c.. they chose the chapel at camp david as their official church. when they are not there, they visit different churches in the district. >> you can see them walking home to the white house like normal folks. still ahead this hour, a man who was homeless getting a second chance. the controversial website that has helped him turn his life around. and pump prices on the move. what you need to know before the next fill up. and a wild shootout caught on camera. new details on the madness near a university campus. that coming up. some scary moments at a gas station? there you go. >> we hope there won't be a strike. >> reporter: the union representing colorado workers at some of the nation's big grocery chains has threatened just that, after members repeatedly rejected company offers. >> i think it's suicidal. i think they can be replaced by people who would gladly work for 8 or $10 an hour just to be off the streets. >> reporter: the stores tell us they have more applications for temporary workers willing to cross the strike line than they could ever use. it may never come to that. the union is now hoping to reopen negotiations, and the safeway and king supers chains say they are considering it. in denver, fox news. caught on camera in ohio. a shootout inside a bar that looks like something out of the wild west. see the gunfire there, people ducking for cover. this is how it went down thursday, but tonight neighbors are very worried. that bar is still open despite the showdown that pitted five gunmen against unknown targets inside. investigators think it had something to do with drugs, ssibly the bar being involved, and that's why the community is upset. >> it's a little disturbing. i thought maybe this will shut it down, and it was operating under the impression it was. that's a little disturbing. you should have some type of mechanism scanning to make sure there's no guns on the premtion, innocent people can be hurt. al bullet doesn't are a name on it. >> there were a total of five gunmen, none of them have been caug. amazingly despite all the bullets flying inside, no one was hurt. a florida man shot someone who he thought was breaking into his house what turned out to be his fiancee. police say the 62-year-old man shot his fiancee early friday morning. the woman was hit in the chest and died from her injuries. the man has not been charged. fact, yesterday was supposed to be their wedding day. it has been nearly two months since authorities in d.c. including the washington humane society, rescued a dog from a trash bag in a dumpster. she nearly died. the dog named trooper is getting a second chance. fox 5's john han are a han shows how she is beating the odds. >> reporter: this two-year-old pitbull is named trooper because of her will to love. two months ago, a woman noticed something moving in a black trash bag. >> they noticed when they looked in deeper, they had found she had chewed her way through the front of the bag. >> reporter: the wounds were so gruesome, we can't show on television some of the more graphic photographs taken by the humane society. >> she was in shock, and she was critical, dehydrated. she had bite wounds all over her face and neck. >> reporter: trooper had to be sedated daily so her wounds could be dressed. because of her seet tempment, investigators believe she was used as a bait animal by people who stage dog fights. and then she was discarded like a bag of trash. slowly, trooper has gotsen better. the veterinary bills total more than $8,000, but plus of publicity, donations have poured in and have covered the cost of her care. >> she does have some issues with other dogs, but around all of our staff, she has bn very good. >> reporter: trooper is now moving on to a facility that specializes in the emotional rehabilitation of abused animals. >> is it likely she will be adopted? take a look outside. we have a few clouds, but things are going to improve because we have a nice ridge of high pressure that's going to dominate our weather pattern into the course of later on tonight and tomorrow. so not doing badly at all. look at this wonderful shot of the national monumenton the mall. really nice. we're going to look at the weather headlines as always, and holiday monday is looking good. we're really excited about it. we have some great weather on tap for you, but we do have some cooler days and chill clrk nights ahead, and we have already experienced the chilly nights and some wind in the forecast, but also a little bit of rain as well. we will have to keep an eye on that. in the meantime, things not all bad. here's a look at the high today, into the 60s, and temperaturewise, we will be close to the upper 60s and into the 70s, but we will see a dip as we through the week. as we get closer, more into fall, we're going to continue to see the temperatures change. but look at temperatures right on and off. it is chilly outside. 57 degrees at national airport. we have 46 at gatorsberg. 50 degrees at dulles, and 53 degrees at annapolis. let's take a look at the mid-atlantic. 53 to the south at richardson moned. now, tonight we will have clearing skies, also have light winds, and that brings the chill of things right down, and temperatures are going to be into the 40s. a lot colder to areas in the far west, however, and that is where we have a frost advisory in effect. and that includes pendleton county, mineral counties, all encased in that, and 2:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. that's in effect. if you have any plans and you're living in that area, bring them up or cover them up to protect them. definitely going to be needed. temperatures across the country, here is the cold spot right here, and this is where they have been seeing plenty of snowfall across areas of the higher elevations. take a look in contrast, 76 to south of brownsville texas, and 82 degrees in phoenix. well, here's auto look at the sky -- a look at the sky conditions there as we see rain across the southern gulf and snow in the northern plains. for us as i said, we have some improvements and let's take a look at satellite. the clouds, trying to move their way through. some of this is upper level cloud coverage here, but a ridge of high pressure is going to be in control, and that will lead us back to sunshine with clouds for tomorrow. back to the weather maps, with the ridge of high pressure in control, it will slide its way off th coast into tomorrow. we have an approaching frontal system. that will bring up some clouds as we head to the later part of today, and we could see a passing stray shower late tomorrow evening, that's very possible. but tuesday, the front system will head its way across our area. next storm system, we have a coastal low to watch, and by the end of the week, measurable rainfall. tomorrow is a holiday. any outdoor plans? good thing because we have some nice weather for you. mostly sunny, light wind, stray evening storm possible as i said. 58 to 61 degrees is our range. here's the five-day forecast for you. temperatures taking a dip once we get into midweek, and sunshine will start to kind of lessen up asthe clouds increase with the coastal system we will have to watch. looking at wet weather wednesday night, thursday and friday wet days, we have to keep our eye to the sky. but holiday monday, i'm happy it's looking good. >> you're happy, and a lot of folks, too. >> isn't it canadian thanksgiving tomorrow?
