There is sort of the last part of the doc, is that period of time after the trial. I think no one focuses on after everything else. After the acquittal in 1995, we all o. D. d on o. J. And we forgot about him. Anyone, what i have heard, people watched the hour and a half of the dumd, and said, i had no idea this happened. You made headlines because of this interview, because you said, i think tell me if im not getting the quote right, that there wasnt enough to prosecute the case, that bill hodgman was. Did you think thepr i think they did an excellent job. Did they bungle the case as some people think . Marcia clark is a fabulous lawyer. Bill hodgman was the person that i picked. But when he had his heart problem, thats it. You know . Heres the team. You didnt mean to slam Marcia Clarks prosecution of the case. She is a wonderful person. Intense person. But a very good trial lawyer. This documentary goes one particular place, inside that white bronco chase. You actually have the interviews with contact lamb i believe. Take us into those moments for us watching. We think we see a suicide at o. J. , driving somewhere, with a. C. , with cash. That may not be the case. That may not be the case. But it was impossible to know what was going on in o. J. s mind. It was as important to dumd the that day, from gill you see in chase, as watching it on tv. To the police and the s. W. A. T. Guys who went to his house. To zoe tore, who the helicopter pilot who found o. J. I think part of what i was hoping to do was show this from a 360degree perspective of those on the ground that day. Thats not something you think he was suicidal in the car . No idea. The themes are shot through the documentary. They were shot through the case, in terms of how o. J. Embraced race in the middle of this trial. And you talk about that transition. And also, the backdrop of l. A. Talk about o. J. Simpson and how he came along in terms of his relationship with the black community. And its interesting to hear your perspective on that. O. J. Came from the projects in ventura hill, in a black neighborhood. And i think his life was transformed when he went to usc, where gill went to school, as well. It was a white enclave. This bubble, next black los angeles. And right there is where he became inculturated. And his desire of fame since he was a kid, that thrust him into the arms of white america. Gill, you mentioned that one of the reasons you wanted to be involved in this particular documentary is because it does set the case in the context of l. A. Not just about l. A. An entire nation in terms of the race relations. As District Attorney, my job was to consist the prosecutors. Do we have enough evidence to prove the defendant guilty beyond a reasonable doubt . It was much deeper. I dont know if anyone told you about the story about me reaching out to president carter. Part of my job was to be prepared for every eventuality. Guilty, not guilty, a hung jury. We expected a hung jury. Didnt expect a guilty verdict. Didnt expect not guilty. But it was president carter who was like, saying in the stomach, what can i say to the people about this . He said, theyre coming back not guilty. Its not because he didnt do it. We know he did it. Its because of the injustice in the black community thats taking place. The film does explore that. The world knew muhammad ali as a fighter, a humanitarian. And only a few could call him dad. On thursday, i had a chance to sit down with assad ali, muhammad and lonnies youngest son. You show med how to love the world in ways i didnt know possible. You showed me how to be brave and courageous in situations beyond my belief. You taught me so much the last 25 years, things that will be imprinted in my soul. Its hard to believe that 25yearold assad ali was born a decade after muhammad ali last stepped in a ring. But he had a front row seat. Watching his fathers undeniable impact on the world, in ways both big and small. There were times when back when i was younger, we could be the middle of the road. He would pick them up. We would take them home. And my mom would be you cant pick everybody up. You knew him in a way that we didnt. You knew him as a dad. Tell me about that side of him. He was a huge family man. We shared good times. Specifically, i can remember in his 60s, we were sitting, chairtochair, next to each other. There was a lamp on the table between us. He just snatches a fly out of nowhere. Like that. He just looked at me and said, i still got it. Look at him. Still a great, great presence. You grew up, he was in this struggle with his physicality. What did you learn from the way he handled that . What i learned is you watch until his later years, he was a man that never complained. Never showed you can never tell what days were bad or good, because hes that kind of person. Hes tough. Hes strong. Did you ever wish you could have him for yourself, that you didnt have to share him with the world . My dad was for a bigger purpose, a bigger cause. And for me to want him for myself, is a selfish thing. One of the things that comforted me was the family got to be around him before he passed. Can you share anything you said to him . What i shared with him is more of a thing i would like to keep between me and him personally. I can say that room, it was an emotional, powerful, spiritual moment. We all shared with him. I was able to, you know, say my last few waords i wanted to say to him for a while now. No one ever will touch thi god has come down and took one of his kings. Rest easy, dad, and continue to look over me. Sincerely, your youngest. Really fine young man. By the way, his dad was proud of him. Also an athlete. Went into baseball. Played at the university of louisville. And is now a College Baseball coach in iowa.
